Perks

Things are moving very quickly on the right of way. The fellow has a guy coming out Wednesday to plot the road. He had another guy there today to mark the location of the gas line from our well to the house so that this doesn't get messed up during construction.

I was running today, myself and only got these updates from Tim via the phone.

We had been handed the contracts, which needed to be signed and notarized. We were very plain about what we wanted, but we've never done such a thing before. I suggested to Tim that we might want to have Ken, our property lawyer just look it over before we notarized everything.

Tim said, "We should, but I don't know how quickly he could see us."

I called the office and Mary said, "This is crazy, but we just had a cancelation tomorrow at 10:30. Any way that you could fill that? I said, "Sure can," and just that quick it was arranged.

Ken read through everything and quick as a wink, found one mistake, and made a couple additions to protect us against future sales/use of the adjacent property, but he assured us that it was a good document. He handed back our papers with his notes and Tim took out his checkbook. Ken said, "You folks have given me a lot of business through the years. No charge today." We've never had a lawyer tell us that before.

Tim gave the papers back to the 'grantee', and he read the changes and agreed, and took it home to reprint it. He gave the new documents back to Tim when they met to map out the planned road. In addition to the payment, he gave Tim hunting rights on his acreage which is adjacent to and behind our property, up the hill. He has a profitable logging business and is giving us curly oak to trim out the windows in the new house.  He also volunteered to send the bulldozer over to spread the dirt pile from our basement excavation.

All three of those things are some pretty big 'perks'. We're a little dumbfounded.

I scooted back to town in time to meet Tim to get the notary work done, and then I was back on the road again. I got back home just after five.

Tomorrow, we'll head back down and get back to work on the house. The plan is to put up the wall paper on the upper half of the walls in the pantry. The bottom will have wooden bead board which will need to be poly'ed before it is installed. We also have to paint a closet.

I'll have pictures for you.

    1. I almost find myself looking a bit suspiciously at the world when this happens. Let's just hope that things continue to roll along smoothly. Meeting with the city and their lawyer next week.

    1. Oh, Jenny. We've still got to hook up the electricity and plumbing. That should begin happening in August. Not sure how long it will take to complete. I do know that I will be pleased to have a bathroom on site!

Your blog has sparked some very serious rocking chair envy.

  3. Wow, a lawyer at every turn. You have a good neighbour though, or at least he should be a good one, though the future is always indefinite Debby.

    1. All we can do is make responsible choices in the here and now and let the future happen.

  4. Wow, seems like for every sort of negative bump in the road, there's a positive bump! Although sometimes in the middle of the shitstorm, it doesn't feel like it! I understand the feeling, too, of your eyes darting back and forth thinking, hmm, is this real? Will another shoe have to fall? My Hubs would say, enjoy the good, get through the bad. He helps me remember that Life is about balance.

  7. Pretty cool when everything goes smoothly. Sounds like you have a good neighbor. And are doing things the right way with the lawyer. It's best to cover your bases.

  8. You two do good things for others and others do good things for you. It's so nice to see and gives me hope in a divided world.

  12. Curly oak trim? What a nice perk. Some people are unwilling to hear those sorts of deals out and miss out on such perks.
