As awful as it sounds, I have really kind of enjoyed having a break from the rehab work. I have caught up on things around the house, which always makes me feel cheery.
Today, I played around with a new bread recipe. I felt as if I might have lost my 'knack'. I've always used the same recipe, but it just hasn't turned out right. Today, I started out with a new recipe, and I could feel right away that it was going to 'work'. Even being able to know that made me feel as if I was rediscovering something I was afraid was lost forever. So that was a happy thing.
I also started (finally) my sourdough starter. I'm only on day one, and I'm not sure about it. If worse comes to worse, I'll just start again, but Ms Moon, I did find myself wishing that you were on speed dial. I had questions.
It just feels invigorating to do new and different things, so I guess that's my happy for the day.
I do feel better. I'm not there yet, but I slept decently last night, and that helps a lot. I told Tim I'd probably be ready to get back to the rehab work Monday morning.
It's still snowing.
It's a poor picture, but I really think our snowy street looks beautiful at night.
So glad you are feeling better.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, so. am. I!
DeleteThat is wonderful that your day was so good, feeling better, new recipe and a better night's sleep last night.
ReplyDeleteLife always seems a bit brighter on a good night's sleep.
DeleteThere's nothing like good home made bread.
ReplyDeleteIt is a nice thing...if it turns out.
DeleteSnow in cities quickly loses its attractiveness but it appears to hold up so much better in quieter areas, and yes, quite beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI always like the look of it at night. Of course, I'm in the house at night, and not likely to have anywhere I need to go. Perhaps there is a connection. Let me think about it.
DeleteI got a gf sourdough kit for Christmas. We aren't gf but I do cook some gf as friends and extended family sometimes require. It does require a camp oven which I don't have and my two attempts this far have been disappointing. I decided to try a discard recipe today for English muffins using wm flour and it was more successful so all hope is not gone. So glad that you are feeling better
ReplyDeleteLike a cast iron dutch oven?
DeleteI decided to start over today. I don't know what I did wrong. But I used the discarded stuff to make a whole wheat version of naan bread. It actually turned out quite nicely, which was a surprise, because I wasn't expecting that.
Glad to hear you are so much better.
ReplyDeleteThe snowy street scene looks so very festive.
That street light just lends just the nicest bit of magic to it. I've always liked that about our life in town. When we move, we will not have streetlights.
DeleteMagical is just the adjective I was thinking! It’s lovely!
DeleteGood to hear you are feeling better and reporting for duty soon!.
ReplyDeleteA bit of snow overnight has been washed away by morning rain here. That might be 'It' for the year
Oh sure....rub it in, why don't you. :)
DeleteI think snowy street looks rather good. You have captured the moment/season.
ReplyDeleteIt is a pretty sight. I've seen quite a bit of that sight this winter.
DeleteI don't think it is at all awful to appreciate a break from tedious labour.
ReplyDeleteBack to work tomorrow.
DeleteKeep on enjoying your break. Gigi
ReplyDeleteAll good things must come to an end. But it was very pleasant. Tomorrow? Drywall. :(
DeleteYour change of routine - can hardly call it a 'break' - is clearly doing you good. The mansion in your street looks most attractive in the snow.
ReplyDeleteThat house was tumble down. The buyer turned it into four apartments. He's from NJ, I think. But he has a local property manager. People come and people go at an amazing clip. I'm so grateful we do not have that issue.
DeleteGlad you are feeling better. You deserved a break, Debby. You have been so busy!
ReplyDeleteYou know, I really have enjoyed it.
DeleteIt does look beautiful -- from inside! Glad you're feeling better. :)
ReplyDeleteIt does look much nicer when you don't have to go out in it!
DeleteWell, you have my email but my advice would probably all sound like "be patient."
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you mean about having a break by getting sick. I look back on my bout of covid when we were on vacation as one of the sweetest times of my life. It makes me laugh.
I actually tossed my starter from yesterday and started my starter all over again. It looks more how I expected it. Not sure what I did yesterday. But I used it to make a blop of unleavened bread which turned out to be quite nice actually.
DeleteActually, I think that photo is quite beautiful and peaceful.
ReplyDeleteSourdough just needs time, but it will happen.
I'm glad you're feeling better.
Well, I'm holding you to that, sistah!
DeleteThe building across the street -- love it!
ReplyDeleteIt is nice.
DeleteDoughnisha, as we refer to our sour dough creature, passed her one year anniversary a month ago.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid to give mine a name until such a time as I know she is going to make it.
DeleteI am jealous of you and your ability to make bread. I made several attempts and was and remain unsuccessful. I stick to dinner rolls now. (small victories) Glad you're feeling better.
ReplyDeleteIf at first you don't succeed... (and all joking aside, that's the secret. That's how you learn to bake bread.
DeleteI am plucking up the courage to try sourdough. I use yeast for now. I am having issues with bread in the new oven but some googling has given me some ideas so maybe the next loaf will be better. There is something deeply primal about making bread. I always love looking at snow - but then I don't have to live with it.
ReplyDeleteInteresting that you put it that way. I can't knead dough without remembering my mother kneading dough. And she got her recipe from our great grandmother who never had a recipe...she just made bread with a pinch of this and a handful of that, just as she was taught, I suppose. So...yes...primal.

ReplyDeleteYour picture makes it look cold and snowy outside.
It IS cold and snowy outside, not much different I suppose than your weather there!
