Vote

I have been hit twice with flyers which come via USPS, and warn me that I am not registered to vote, and that I need to register by October 21st.

The thing is that I am registered to vote.

(You can all check your status by going to https://www.nass.org/can-I-vote

You would click on the 'i' for Check on Voter Registration Status

You will be asked to pick your state.

You are given a choice to verify via your name or to enter your driver's license number. Enter the requested information and the very first note is "active" (or I suppose "not active" if action is required.

If you live in Pennsylvania, you are only required to register once, with no need to register again unless you change your address, your name, or your political affiliation.)

I just wanted to make sure everyone knew how to check your status, so forgive the side track. Anyhow, I quickly verified that I was still active, and I was. I verified that Tim was still active. And he is.)

Once that was done, I read the information on the mailers, which was fascinating. Right at the bottom of the cards, it tells your that Duty To America is not affiliated with any government agency. The wording of it made me suspicious, and I discovered that yes, it is a right wing PAC.

Further discussion leads us to this (by Fox News, no less)

This is a race that is being run on a huge amount of misinformation, and it is being done with intention. Make sure that you are registered to vote. If you are registered to vote, ignore any texts, mailings or phone messages that try to tell you that you are not.

You all know how I am voting. I'm not voting for this.

    1. You know, I'm fatalistically waiting. The fear is gone. I am hopeful. I'm not quite at the point of optimism, but I do see hopeful signs everywhere.

  3. Surely, the US is the only country where they discourage people from voting. Everything is so complicated down there.

    1. No. That practice is widespread in countries that have ruthless dictators. I remember one country, where armed soldiers came to your house with guns and stood there while you filled out your ballot. People were afraid to vote against the man in power.

  6. We have a state election over here on the 26/10. Unfortunately the current government have not been kicking goals so it will take the opposition falling flat on their faces to get any outcome other than a complete routing - given the history of our state politics, this will not be unusual.

    1. You know, Jeanie, the biggest fear I have is that this chaos will simply incorporate itself into our politics. If it does, we will surely lose our democracy. I believe this.

  7. I'm so sick of the misinformation and trickery and flat out lies. Since SC is not a swing state we've been spared some of the worst of the shenanigans. I'll bet it's been crazy in PA.

I hope that the record setting first day of early voting in Georgia yesterday is a good sign for the Harris campaign. Gregg and I plan to vote early as soon as we're able.

  9. I don't even read anything glossy and of that size format these days so I've probably gotten some but never knew it. I just throw them in the trashcan as soon as I get inside.

The music interlude at the Trump Q&A was just bizarre. But then I expect nothing less from him.

  10. Went to vote early yesterday here in Ohio. My jaw dropped as I drove up. In 40 yrs of voting in Stark County I've never seen the like. Usually the BOE lot is practically empty, and just a couple of registrars. But yesterday. OMG lot was packed, volunteers managed parking. 3 policemen 1 in, 2 out, 6 registrars, and the people. Oh the people! A line around the building. And more arriving. 40 voting machines busy. Line went quickly, efficiently. Everyone calm but the electricity was palpable. Ohio is a red state but…hope springs eternal. I'll never forget being part of this event. People ARE turning out this year. So VOTE, make your voice count. Turn the page! Kris in Ohio

    1. Kamala Harris was in Erie, and I would love to have gone. I could not because I can't drive at night anymore. I have a cataract. But people stood in line for hours to be admitted to the rally. After the doors opened, approximately 1000 people were turned away. There was a trump protest there, which made me laugh. 8 people stood there waving their flags and rude signs. It is electric, Kris! In my neighborhood, there are, of course, the trump signs. But there are also quite a few Harris signs (including the one in my window). Around the corner from a house we've been working on, there is a house that was positively draped in trump banners. We have just begun to work on that house again and I'm so happy to see that the trump stuff is no longer there. An American flag, and a Steelers banner. In the end, we shall see what we shall see, won't we? Less than three weeks! I'm just so hopeful.

  12. Here in Ohio our Secretary of State keeps dropping thousands from the voting rolls weeks before elections. You really need to stay on top of your registration. He also likes to take ballot issues and rewrite them into an explanation several paragraphs long that distort the ballot incentive. The only hope is the crazies don't read them anyway. I can tell you the right wing crazy running against our Senator Sherrod Brown has more funding than is possible. As a registered member of the opposing party, I get full cover flyers on cardstock every single day with total lies and distortions about this maniac. I can't imagine the cost. And the commercials! I can't.

I'm glad our early voting started already and my voting is done. Now I just have to wait and hope that everyone is voting Blue like me!!

Now. On to Trump's performance at the music fest- HOW CAN THE MEDIA NOT BE GOING CRAZY OVER THIS? But no, just another day in Trump Rally World. You never know what kind of stuff that wild and crazy guy will do.
    It's beyond horrifying.

    1. It is a simple way to check your status. Making sure we can vote is the most important thing we can do this year.

  16. That is very strange. The web address on the flier DOES appear to lead to the state web site. I'm not sure this is the same as the false texts telling people they're not registered. Is it possible you're registered at a different address? Weird!

    1. I don't understand any of it myself. But what I can tell you is that although Tim has faithfully voted democrat in the last 3 elections, he is registered as an independent. He does not receive these things. But the takeaway message for me (I did not click on the link, because I'm suspicious of any link that comes attached to something that is obviously bogus) is check your status and DO NOT RESPOND to anything that comes to you in a text, phone call or mail, that tries to tell you that you are NOT registered.

    2. Debby, I was always listed as Independent. Then one year I wanted to vote in a primary and requested a Dem ballot. That switched me to Dem. They tell me I have to vote 'issues only' in 3 primaries to get back to Independent. There seems no way for me to just get switched back on my own. Oh well. Maybe Tim has not voted in a primary. Also all is different in each state. Keep the faith. Think BIG BLUE! Kris in Ohio

    3. Tim cannot vote in a primary. That's why I keep suggesting that he 'pick a team'. But it doesn't matter to him. He is fierce about DJT though. Fierce. He's a union man.

  17. Lies, lies, everywhere lies..... I'm cautiously optimistic the orange bloated carcass will go down in flames, though he is well worshipped all around me. But I see enough signs from the good guys to keep me hopeful. p.s. I already voted an absentee ballot.

    1. Good for you, Deb. That's the only recourse we have. Vote. Someone on facebook received a comment on a post that read, "We are going to make J6 look like a school social." There was quite a fluttering about it, since the man posted under his full name. I said, "Bring it!" A bunch of silly people trying to intimidate everyone else. The only way we're going to get past this stuff is to simply gird our loins and move through it. We need to stop acting scared every time someone makes an ignorant statement. The thing that is forgotten is that we out number them.

  18. The misinformation is very concerning, both there and here. I mentioned on another blog that my daughter had spent a day with some American girls from the southern states, they are all in their 20s, and the news stories they received on their phones was astonishingly different from hers. Whereas once you would have had to be sufficiently interested to buy a newspaper - and they were usually biased - now you get this rubbish without asking, and it is designed to make you so mad as to vote a particular way.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Part of that is due to the dreaded 'algorithms'. Your click history is tracked, and they tailor your feed to what will make you click on it. You are right when you say that it is designed to make you mad. That is the whole point.

It is disheartening about those girls, but I guarantee you that they are evangelical Christians who fervently believe that God has sent us Donald Trump.

  19. When you register to vote you have to tell them who you are affiliated with? Surely that defeats the purpose of secret ballots? And what if you change your mind at the last minute? Does that preclude you from casting a vote? A very confused Aussie here!

    1. Let me try to explain. When you register to vote, you register your affiliation. I am a democrat. That does not mean that I can't vote republican. I've even done so in my 50 years of voting. But what that does is allows you to vote in the democratic primaries. Those elections are what determines our presidential nominee. I cannot vote in the republican primaries. Republicans pick who they want to be on the presidential ticket. Once the nominees are selected, they campaign and go up against each other. At that point, if I felt that the republican nominee was the best candidate, I am free to vote for him. (Long pause, as I wipe tears of laughter and pick myself up from the floor.) Nope. I will be voting straight democrat this year, just as I voted the last election. We need to get Mike Johnson out of the speaker of the house position.
