Today was another working day. We are trying to clear out the building stuff from the livingroom/kitchen area so that we can begin putting down the flooring in there.
Tim grouted the tile inside the front door. I polyurethaned a pile of boards that we were going to use for the trim in the livingroom. We made a good beginning on it, and we will finish that up tomorrow. We spent the rest of our time cleaning up the freshly grouted tile.
I saw something that I've been toying around with getting for my oldest granddaughter who is turning into quite a reader now. There is a program that creates a story for a child, an adventure, or a fantasy. The story is told over a period of a year in letter form, one letter every two weeks. She dearly loves stories, and I thought it would be fun for her, but $129. for a year seemed kind of pricey. I was thinking about it today, and I've got a crazy idea to create the story myself and send it out. I mean, I know her and the little details of her life well enough that I could create something pretty personalized.
So...that's how I kept myself entertained today while I was working: coming up with a story line.
It was a gray day, and we've got another winter storm moving in tomorrow night.
Not much to report tonight. It is a sad night for me, but some days are just like that.
My daughter gave me a plan like that last Mother's Day, I think. It sends me questions about my childhood and other events in my life and I write a page or story to answer the question. I can also create a story of my own, so I have made a page for my grandchildren and cute things they do also wrote some about my children's childhood. At the end of a year the company will take the stories and bind them in a hard cover book, one for each of my two kids. I think it will be interesting for my grands to learn about their grandparents and other people in our life and other fun facts about our family.
ReplyDeleteThe company my daughter used is called Storyworth. I just type my letter and hit send. She has the option to read the letters as sent or wait until the book comes out and read as a book.
DeleteI think your story idea is a great one! Children love to get mail, too. I bet you both would really enjoy it.
ReplyDelete$129 sounds a lot if they are just churned out, the same to each child or slightly tailored, but I do like the essence of the idea. I like the idea of what Elliek above suggests too.
ReplyDeleteAnother tick off or two at the new house.
I think the story idea is lovely. You are a good storyteller so I think you would be able to create something quite magical for her.
ReplyDeleteI think your idea to go down the DIY route will give you both a lot of pleasure.
ReplyDeleteWow, she will love and cherish your letters, personal letters are very few these days.
ReplyDeleteThat's a fun idea! And then you could put it altogether into a book at the end, so she can save it in one volume.
ReplyDeleteThat is such a good idea.Your granddaughter would love it.
ReplyDeleteIt would mean so much to your granddaughter later to know that you were the author of all the personalized stories that she had received. And a book is a perfect idea. My kids received those type of books when they were young and read them over and over again, they loved them. My son in law was a great story teller and he did a running story at bedtime about a bear for my grandson and I kept telling him he should make it into a book it was that good, but he never did. I must ask my grandson if he remembers them. He is in his late 20’s now. We are supposed to get at least a foot of snow tonight too. Gigi
ReplyDeleteI am sorry this is a sad night for you Debby. That is a great idea for your granddaughter. My mother-in-law wrote poetry and gave each person in her family a copy of a specific one she wrote about them. I ran across mine a few days ago. I do treasure it and I am certain your granddaughter would feel the same.
ReplyDeleteYou can do it. I would not attempt to write s story. BTW, I think that app sounds like a good one. Maybe worth the investment along with your personal creation? Sometimes, we have to spend more that we want for something that is worthwhile. Geez, I sound like a am mansplaining in a very condescending way. It's just the thoughts that run through my head, and I just kinda 'blurt' them out. 😎
ReplyDeleteHappy things but a sad night? I hope this morning finds you in better spirits Debby. And that story price did sound high, but maybe not so bad for an entire year's worth of mailings. You seem busy enough as it is.
ReplyDeleteI like the do it yourself story - and the fun of getting a letter with the next chapter. Plus you can adjust as interests pop up, etc. Maybe illustrations, drawings or collage type thing? You know, in your spare time.....

Yes. Your story, from your own head and heart will be so much more meaningful. And probably better.
ReplyDeleteWriting a series of stories would be a good thong for you and your daughter. Go for it.
ReplyDeleteI like your story idea. Why pay someone else for a generic story when you are a good writer yourself who knows the subject!
ReplyDeleteIt's hard not be sad these days, Debby.
This sounds like a wonderful idea. I'm sure she'll love it, especially letters in the mail.
ReplyDeleteI think your idea of crafting the story yourself is wonderful I am betting it will be much better than some fill-in-the- blank machine thing.
ReplyDeleteIt is not a fill in the blank thing. You just write your story as you would tell it. The questions are just a suggestion. I have made a page about my kids as little ones, my daughters' proms and things about my parents and grandparents that will make memories for my kids and grands. When a memory comes to mind that I want my kids to know or remember I just type it and hit send.
DeleteKay of Musings: Uuuummm…. Looks like you’ve got spam here.
ReplyDeleteI love your idea of doing stories for your granddaughter. You’re a fabulous writer. She’ll love it! I’m sorry you had a sad night, Debby.
You need to block that troll. The idea for a storybook for your granddaughter is grand.
ReplyDeleteI love your idea of creating your own stories — and your granddaughter will too!! So much more meaningful this way for all of you!!
ReplyDeleteWinter makes for sad nights, especially this year.
