Try again

Boy, I can't even guess what's wrong with blogger tonight. Finally just deleted the last post and will try again. I did get the Christmas tree down, and all the boxes of lights and ornaments and crystal beads, and got it decorated.

This is the world's worst picture, taken in bad light with a poor phone camera, but I couldn't quite get myself motivated to haul out the big camera.

It is a nice thing to unload the ornaments and the memories that go with them. One from my parents' first Christmas. One from Tim's parents' tree. Ornaments collected over a lifetime, from different people, from different places, from different times. It's a little sobering how many of those people are gone from this world.

I decorated the tree by myself. Tim was out hunting again. He's quite excited. He saw a buck. Even if he were home, Tim would not have been interested in decorating the tree. He likes it well enough when it's done, but not well enough to actually participate in getting it done.

It's his nature.

When I was done with everything, I hauled all the empty boxes back up stairs to pack into the steamer trunk.

I got the box packed and ready to mail out to my son and his family. My daughter in law sent me a picture of their Christmas tree all set up and decorated. The big question? (drum roll, please): Does the little drummer boy ornament that his great-grandmother needle pointed probably 30 years ago still play music. Answer: yes. 'Toyland' still plays its tinny tune.

(It's Dylan's Christmas miracle.)

Next question: What does the baby think of the tree? Answer: She is fascinated by it, but afraid to get close.

(Which is sort of another Christmas miracle, don't you think?)

I got the livingroom put all back together and admired the tree in the semidarkness while I finished wrapping and packing up all the things that are going to be mailed out tomorrow. I will admit to watching an episode of Dateline while I did that, Keith Morrison's creepy quiet voice not exactly adding to the Christmas vibe I was trying to kickstart.

However:

Quite honestly, after years of hearing him narrate episodes of mayhem and murder, I have to confess that hearing him reading children 'The Night Before Christmas' gave me the creeps.

I got out Tim's bubble light candelabra and set that up. He came home from hunting with a good supper waiting and he happily watched his bubble lights in the dark while eating.

  1. Hmm... I wish I could come home to dinner, a nice tree all lit up and with bubble lights! Married guys get all the perks. :^)

    1. Two more! I got the last gift I was waiting for, wrapped it and the got all the things packed, sealed with way more tape than a person with sense needs. I will take it to the post office tomorrow and get it on its way. That is a biggy.

  3. Your tree looks lovely. Jack has been asking about ours but I don't usually put it up until after my daughter's birthday. I'm also worried he won't be able to keep his fingers off of it:)

    1. Probably not, but that is part of the fun, really.

  4. Maybe some year soon your granddaughters can come decorate your tree with you? I remember decorating the tree and rediscovering the old ornaments every year as one of the highlights of the season…

    1. It would be nice, but they live quite a distance. William is quite caught up in his own business these days.

  5. Our little tree is up and decorated. I do it for my grandson's birthday which is today. Before he was born it used to be sometimes as late as Christmas Eve before I'd done it.

    1. How fun. One memorable year, I didn't get a tree at all. We were working mandatory overtime 10 hour days 7 days a week. It was awful. It took everything to get Christmas gifts bought and wrapped.

    1. It does seem very cozy to sit in a dark room with the Christmas lights.

  7. I haven't decorated a Christmas tree in years but I still have two girls at home who fight over doing so.

Keith Morrison being the step father of Mathew Perry sort of blew my mind.

    1. That came as a surprise to me as well. I had no idea!

  8. If Tim had a blog he would write: "went out hunting on my own again - it's not Debby's thing - she was at home decorating a tree - although she likes well enough what I bring home".

  9. I am in Tim's camp when it comes to decorating. I don't know why, it's just that I can see others get more joy out of doing it so I am happy to step back.
The only gifts that I have sorted thus far is "$#!+mas" gifts for workmates - although I cannot follow the theme fully so they all got useful gifts - I made up some spice mixes.

  11. I've lots of things going, but no tree inside. Haven't had one for years...and I wonder who I gave the ornaments to... I do love putting twinkle lights in the windows which mean plugging in/unplugging each evening. Mmm, I think I saw the timer somewhere lately...

    1. I just gave our nativity to my oldest daughter. It is something the kids remember from their own childhoods, and I got the idea that if we gave it to them, William would have his own memories of it, and one day, hopefully, it will be handed down to him. It really is a beauty, each figure handmade and hand painted.

  13. Our decorating is delayed as I recover from Covid. Now my son who lives with me has caught it so I will rally to take care of him. It's good to be motivated to get out of bed and I feel better so it's the least I can do for spreading it to him.
You and Tim are well matched, I think.

  14. My younger daughter has a carousel ornament that is 30+ years old and still plays its little tune. I haven't put up and decorated a tree since my kids all moved out.

    1. Isn't just so funny. I mean, grandma made three of those ornaments. One by one, they go with the people they belong to. I think his is the only one that still works. His wife says that every year, he looks specifically for that ornament, and is always tickled to find that it is still working.

  15. Sounds like a cozy evening. Dave is also not interested in decorating a tree. If I don't do it, it doesn't happen!

    1. It's more fun to do it as part of a team. I used to try to tease Tim into doing it. He is simply not interested, and it led to ruffled feathers. So. I just shut up and do it.

  16. Thank you for visiting my blog after I had been away for so long. Coincidentally I was leafing through the book you sent me just the other day. Eventually, (even soon perhaps) I will write about the events of this year - Jane's father passed away but it was the circumstances which made it so difficult - but first I need to warm up – both with my pen and in my house... boy it is cold here today!

    1. Oh no! My condolences to Jane! She's lost both parents in pretty short order. I am sure this will be a tough holiday season for her. Take care and stay warm! (Or should I say, 'get warm?')

I understand how you can associate a voice with certain subjects and in another context, they are just so wrong.

I'm glad you're here!

More about Fashion (a topic I know little about).

While we are on the subject of fashion, I have to tell  you, when I read about this, I thought for sure that it was one of those bogus news...
