Friends, It seems like an eternity, but Tuesday marks the seventh week of this despicable regime. Before I post my Sunday cartoon, I’d like to talk about coping with the stresses of this era. A few people I know are coping by remaining in denial. They continue to normalize what’s happening in the familiar terms of Republican versus Democrat, right versus left, conservative versus liberal or progressive. But they’re deluding themselves. There’s nothing normal about this. We’re in a different world now. Even calling this “Trump 2.0” radically understates what’s happening. The choice is democracy or dictatorship. Self-government or oligarchy. Everyone must choose sides. Not to choose is to accept the forces now in control — to allow Trump to become even more of a dictator and his billionaire backers and cronies to siphon up even more oligarchic wealth and power. Another coping mechanism that’s just as dangerous is giving up — succumbing to cynicism, believing everything is hopeless. Those in this defeatist camp think nothing can prevent us from an apocalypse — the end of America, the termination of civilization, the death of the planet. They’ve stopped reading or listening to the news. They’ve turned their backs on activism. But defeatism is exactly what Trump, Vance, Musk, and Putin want us to feel. They’d like nothing better than for us to give up, so they can have it all. Cynicism and hopelessness play into their fetid hands. It’s also a self-fulfilling prophesy. If we believe we’re doomed, we’re doomed. The reality is that Trump, Vance, and Musk have done truly terrible things over the past seven weeks that are already hurting millions of people. But the regime has not extinguished hope or resolve. To the contrary, it is igniting activism. It’s fueling courage. I see it all around me, as I’m sure you do as well. Let me share with you my six coping mechanisms. First, I’ve stopped listening to Trump and even stopped trying to analyze his warped psyche. I already know he’s spouting nothing but lies. And by now I’m familiar with his malignant narcissism. Second, I no longer pay attention to the politicians, media personalities, political operatives, and pundits who are treating what’s happening as a variation on normal partisan politics. They’re tiresome and wrong. Instead, I’m seeking out voices who understand the stakes, who give me reasons for hope and practical ideas for what you and I can do. I’ve already shared some of them with you and will share more this week. Some are voices from the past — people who lived through Hitler and Mussolini and Stalin, or through Mao’s “Cultural Revolution” or Pol Pot’s “killing fields.” Some are keen observers of what occurred (Hannah Arendt’s The Origins of Totalitarianism) or historians (William Shirer’s The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany provides a chilling account that echoes today). Fourth, I’m interacting with people whose average age is a half-century younger than mine — my students at Berkeley and my colleagues at Inequality Media. Their energy, humor, and commitment continue to buoy my spirits. Fifth, I’m relishing my friendships and holding my loved ones tight. Finally, I’m writing this daily letter to you in hope that it helps you cope in all these ways — and inspires you to even more activism, resistance, rebellion, good trouble, and peaceful civil disobedience. These are familiar terms to those of us who remember the struggles over civil rights and the Vietnam War. They are as relevant for what we’re going through now as they were then. In other words, one of the best way of coping with this nightmare is to fight it. Keep calling the White House: 1-202-456-1414 (switchboard). 1-202-456-1111 (comments). Jam it. Keep calling your senators and representatives. The Capitol switchboard is 202-224-3121. The switchboard operator will connect you directly with the Senate or House office you request. Organize and mobilize for downballot elections this year, and for House and Senate elections next year. Protect the vulnerable in your community: undocumented workers. LGBTQ+ people. Vocal anti-Trumpers who may need protection from Trump vigilantes. Refugees from Ukraine. Others who need your help. I’m sure you’ve found additional ways of fighting back. Please share them with us in today’s comments. Take heart. We will get through this and be stronger for it. Bless you and thank you. RR I will close the same way. Thank you. |

I think that it really important to stay informed as to what is going on right now.

A lucky find...and a not so lucky find.
My oldest granddaughter loves fairies. When I was a child, I was given a book from my own grandmother. It had the most wonderful fairy stor...
The struggle is real, ignore or read and get mad, frustrated, etc..... There are rays of hope and Robert Reich is one of them.
ReplyDeleteI am trying very hard to maintain a balance, but some days it seems almost impossible. It is bad enough to watch what is happening, but then you have those folks who simply want to tell you that it is business as usual, that it has all happened before, that it is not a big deal. They are the ones I struggle not to smack.
DeleteLooking at it from over here, I really do fervently hope that some sort of fightback takes place, and is successful, before it is all far too late for all of us.
ReplyDeleteIt is happening, JayCee. It sounds very dramatic, but all I can say is that I hope that the implosion happens here, within our borders, before they destroy the world. The pushback is getting louder, and stronger. A local protest group had 40 people participating. This is a big uptick of blue voices being raised in a red county. I can only hope it is representative of what is happening nationwide. Justin Trudeau has been pushed aside for his attempts at diplomatic resolution with our government. This government is not a diplomatic government. Whoever replaces Trudeau will be a hardliner. That should keep our 'toddler King' preoccupied for a while.
DeleteI scroll by, mostly feeds that I like, but it is still tough to handle.
ReplyDeleteTotally understand it, AC. There's a dreadful feeling of helplessness, and yet, we still have a voice. We must use it. That's all we can do.
DeleteI honest to God love Robert Reich. He just won't give up, and hopefully inspires more of us to do the same. Thanks for sharing this Debby (and yes still under the weather but I'm finally out of bed and on the couch, thank you for asking).
ReplyDeleteAw!!! I am really happy to hear that, Doug. I was really hoping that this did not turn into some sort of a set-back for you. You certainly have had a time of it.
DeleteAnd a thank you from me too.
ReplyDeleteI really love that there are so many of us.
DeleteThanks! I signed up for his substack. I've heard him before and really like his point of view. :)
ReplyDeleteHe has been a very helpful counterweight to the angry voices, at least for me.
DeleteI think Musk took a wrong turn when he decided to bring down empathy. Shows how little he knows about humans. These three ruffians are slowly dying in the rest of the world, contempt is strong. Robert Reich is doing a splendid job long may he continue.
ReplyDeleteWe need strong sensible voices during these crazy days.
DeleteI also follow Reich on his podcast. And I will not give up!
ReplyDeleteWe just can't.
DeleteSending best wishes from the UK. You may be interested in a BBC podcast (More or Less) that factchecks statistical claims and calls out lies from the M*GA regime. Here’s a good example https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/more-or-less-behind-the-stats/id267300884?i=1000696939317 with more at https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/more-or-less-behind-the-stats/id267300884
ReplyDeleteThis actually is a very excellent resource. Thank you.
DeleteWe are doing what we can to fight back and the idiot with the squirrel on his head is looking weaker and more deranged every day just what putin wants. When it gets too hot for him, he runs off and plays golf. He is thumbing his nose at the poor people who mistakenly voted for him, and now some are seeing the light. Gigi
ReplyDelete"the squirrel in his head". That just popped out of no where and made me laugh out loud. Thanks Gigi!
DeleteHe's sane, in a world filled with insanity right now. He's a breath of fresh air and gives me hope. Thank you for sharing this.
ReplyDeleteAs for musk and empathy, wow. I sure hope the nurse who wipes his ass when he's an old man has some empathy for him, or maybe she won't have any empathy and will just wipe his ass with pine cones. Nobody knows:)
I don't see him living to an old man, really. His behavior is erratic, and his drug usage has been talked about for years. I see him going off like one of his rockets at some point. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2025/03/ketamine-effects-elon-musk/681911/
DeleteReich has always been so stable and smart. I've been doing at least one act of resistance daily, from encouraging MOC doing a good job, to criticizing those who aren't, to helping flood snitch lines, to responding to agency questionnaires with stuff they don't want to hear. There's a lot we can do. And we can help Ukraine in small ways. Such as buying from their artists.
ReplyDeleteI like that idea...to do one act of resistance a day. I think what is obvious is that the push back really does have an effect.

ReplyDeleteHi Debby, here’s a little encouragement for us all:
A friend once shared what she called the Parable of the Choir: A choir can sing a beautiful note impossibly long because singers can individually drop out to breathe as necessary and the
note goes on.
Social justice activism should be like that, she said.
That's stuck with me.
Joan, what a lovely analogy. I love that. Not one of us can be 'on' at all times, but as a group, we can be 'on' at all times. I really like that.
DeleteI'm hearing of more and more protests going on. I know our senators here in Hawaii are fighting as hard as they can against the Trump regime. Our representative I won't vote for again. Art showed me photos his EPA group sent of the protest in Chicago. We have to keep up the good fight. I understand there's a call out for this coming Friday in D.C. I hope there's a huge turn out. And of course, my postcards will go out on Saturday.
ReplyDeleteAs will mine. I saw the protest in Chicago. Impressive!
DeleteGreat post. People have to speak up. Get the goons off their agenda. I'm still surprised that there has been such a weak response to what has gone on.
ReplyDeleteI think the discouraging thing is that the people with the power are not using it. We can make all the noise down here we want, but it's easier to ignore us. Right now, legislators have been advised to avoid town halls, because their constituents are so angry. All we can do is continue to make noise.
DeleteI think they should put the 3 clowns on muskrat’s next test rocket. Gigi
ReplyDeleteI have commented many times that I think Elon Musk should go up in the next rocket launch so that he can see for himself where the problem is. Trunp shows great interest in his program too...so maybe the stable genius wants to ride along to offer advice as well.
Deletethanks for sharing i needed this linda ks
ReplyDeleteI think we all do Linda.
DeleteSo, the Ketamine King feels we have too much Empathy, I guess for someone whose never had any, like himself, Empathy is something he lacks any understanding of. This is a really good Post reminding us of why we must resist, be Militant in effective ways, stand for what is Just and Right, and make Good Trouble. I limit my exposure to The News, if DonOld comes on or his Cult, I change Channels, they have nothing to say that is Truthful or Helpful to any American, even those who Voted him in. But, I do keep Informed by reliable sources and those who can still get the Truth out there so we know what's going on in Real Time. The top of the Food Chain right now hasn't shown me any real Resistance against any of this, they seem either too impotent or too fearful, which is concerning. I think it will be the Grass Roots Resistance that will ultimately have to do all the Work, we no longer can Trust most of the Elected to Represent us because they seem to be trying to do business as usual, and it's not usual anymore so won't work the way it always has and did anymore.
ReplyDeleteThat last line says it all. It's definitely not business as usual, and anyone who is trying to convince us otherwise is part of the problem.
DeleteThanks, Debby, I just subscribed to his Substack.
ReplyDeleteI'm lucky to live in a blue state with a strong governor (Illinois). I'm disgusted with the Republicans in Congress that aren't doing anything and are now making up more lies to cover it all.
Your governor's speech really was impressive. We have Josh Shapiro, and his statement re the Oval Office ambush was quite impressive. He has already moved to increase funding to schools ahead of expected budget cuts was a bold move as well.
DeleteThe lack of empathy is only one of the many things that are wrong with Musk, not really a surprise considering the fact that he is a sociopath.
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting to read the long term effects of ketamine use.
DeleteI looked up the word empathy (to look more deeply at what Musk could possibly be objecting to) and the definition described it as a "key ingredient in strong relationships and can help you be a better friend, family member, and coworker." Which makes perfect sense, considering Musk has left a trail of human wreckage behind him in both his private and public lives.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could believe that calling the White House makes a difference. Call me cynical but I just don't believe it. I don't think anyone in the executive branch gives a shit what we think as citizens or voters. They are running things for themselves now, and only interested in power. We can call and protest and they'll hang up and laugh until the phone rings again.
I don't call the white house myself, but I do email Glenn Thompson and John Fetterman 2 or 3 times a week. These are the people who are supposed to be doing our business in Washington. I try to hold their toes to the fire.
ReplyDeleteYes, I think if we have any hope for resistance it's going to come from Congress and the courts. Of course, whether Trump will even respect that kind of resistance is another question. He may just say "Make me!" and continue on.
