We did not get a lot done today. I put the finish on the countertops. We used something called Rubio Monocoat, which is something Tim's cousin gave him the last time that we were at the Hardwood Mall in Emlenton. Like, 4 years ago or something. I think he forgot he had it. It was just a small bottle, but I rubbed that in, and it brought out the grain beautifully. It's not shiny, but it gleams. Tim's sold on the product.
Tim has the sink marked out but he wants to cut out the countertop outside to avoid raising all the dust inside. Just about the time that decision was made, the skies opened up. It was raining cats and dogs and showed no signs of letting up.
We unpacked the range hood, and he's pleased with that, but he did not like the wall mounts with the kit, which would require another trip to Lowes.
We do get in trouble at that store. Friday we spent $600. Yesterday we spent $300. Today, well...as long as we were going to be there...Tim wanted subway tile instead of the square tiles. (Inconsequential side note? We have 3 boxes of the square tile in the basement.) But he wanted subway tile with black grout. Picture below has nothing to do with our actual kitchen...just meant to show you the look he's going for.
Don't know how or when that popped in his head, but since we have a black composite sink and the appliances are stainless with black, well, it kind of works. Browsing around last night, I discovered that they had the subway tile he wanted. 4 x 12 for 79¢ each, which by my calculations, we would need about a hundred to do the job, which is kind of economical. As long as you don't consider the 3 boxes of square tile that we have in the basement already, which we actually paid nothing for. Someone had the boxes in their garage for years, and weren't going to use them, so we picked them up because we could use them. Well. We could have if Tim hadn't got an itch about the subway tile. Anyways, so we picked up another $100 worth of stuff today.
I said to Tim on the way out the door, "We need to stay away from Lowes for a while." He cheerfully said, "We can do that. We've got everything we need for the kitchen." Which is very cool.
We are still working on the raised beds.
I've dropped down below the milestone weight I was struggling to reach. I was dropping weight and then sort of 'plateaued' a few ounces above that milestone. I ran out of lettuce for my evening salad, and didn't have time to get more, so I had a small helping of the regular supper I had for Tim (venison roast with vegetables, lots of vegetables). I had small suppers for the next couple days until I got to the store, and much to my surprise, I lost two more pounds last week, which dropped me under that loss. It is my second 'milestone', so I'm pretty happy with myself.
My appointment is Thursday, and I will be interested to see if the A1C has dropped from that 6.4. December was my first high reading. With the weight loss, I think that I'm proving that I am serious about this. I haven't had dessert since January. No sugar in my coffee. Two meals a day. High protein, low carbohydrate, and lots and lots of water.
I didn't watch the news today, at all. I did catch that JD and Usha went to Greenland. The trip was supposed to last from Thursday to Saturday. However, once Greenland got wind that it wasn't just Usha coming, it was JD and an entourage, the invitations were revoked one after another. They could not find anyone that would host the group, and so they went to the only place they could: Pituffik, an American Space Base. 3 hours later, they head home
(DOGE? DOGE, can we talk about government waste?)
It appears that the EU and Canada are standing strong. European citizens are being told to stockpile 72 hours worth of food. (Experts are advising that this should be the minimum.) They are preparing for crisis. Because of us. Because of the aggression of the United States.
I cannot tell you how unbelievably sad this makes me.
For everyone out there wondering what is wrong with the United states, remember this: Only 17% of Americans approve the Gaza plan, 18% approve the annexation of Canada, and 19% approve the president's plan for Greenland. I hope that's a little comforting.

While we're on the topic of government waste that somehow DOGE has missed, there's this: Trump has spent 26 million dollars flying to Mar-a-Lago to play golf every weekend, and he rakes in significant amounts of money by from the government for meals and rooms at his club for his security team.

Elon is supposed to be leaving DOGE in May. I find that hard to believe. We'll see.
I agree with Tim about the subway tiles they will look much better than squares in the kitchen. Save the squares for a powder room.
ReplyDeleteHa! THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT HE SAID. Except that we've already bought 1 foot by 2 foot ceramic marble-look tiles for the shower, along with a gray tile for the floor. We'll probably use the square tile in the basement to make a back splash for the stove and meat cutting station.
DeleteNot wasted then !
DeleteNo...we try not to waste, even if it means passing it on to the next person.
DeleteSounds like good progress: you're spending less each trip to Lowe's and you're losing weight each time you check. I just wish we could lose our bad politician. He's evil. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteBoy, that would be a ton of weight off my shoulders.
DeleteToday the convicted felon said he knows a way around the constitution to run for a third term. Madness.
ReplyDeleteHis proposal to create an executive order to block judges from opposing him is pretty shocking. Google the Rogue Justice Act.
DeleteTrump spoke more politely about PM Carney the other day: small steps maybe.
ReplyDeletedream on.
DeleteI'd like to seem him simply ignored by the world leaders. I think that's the only way to contain the damage. Confine his damage as much as possible to within our own borders.
DeleteCongratulations on hitting your milestone goal. I like the subway tiles with the black grout. That never would have occurred to me. White tile, white grout. Anyway. Do I recall correctly that there is a red appliance in the mix? Laundry maybe?
ReplyDeleteYes. I have a red washer/dryer.
DeleteVeeeeeeeeeery cool.
DeleteAh well, it's Tim's kitchen, his space. If he likes the tiles, that's fine.
ReplyDeleteI think in regard to cleaning, the bigger they are the easier they are to clean.
I watched a short YouTube clip today, about the drop in inbound tourism generally to the US and especially from Canada, where flight schedules are changing to adjust to the drop in tourism. #47 is going to kill the country with only a small majority government.
Surely you jest! His space. *snort*.
DeleteSadly, Andrew, I think that the only way out of this is when the MAGA faithful begin to feel the pinch. If I lived in a foreign country, the last place I would come is to America. I saw that foreign governments are issuing travel advisories. For here. I just cannot wrap my head around this.
Great idea to use the square tiles in the basement. Practical and no waste!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the weight loss. Bet it feels good.
What will really feel good is if they simply stop pushing to medicate. I still don't understand that. My numbers are not high enough to warrant that according to the AMA. Based on my number, they advocate a second test, and medicating only after it has been shown that diet and exercise will not help.
DeleteWell done on the weight loss, it's not an easy thing to acheive.
ReplyDeleteIt seems to be going easier this time around. I'm pretty determined.
DeleteI'm still hoping Trump will be assassinated - and I don't even LIVE in the States! He is a loathsome man with absolutely no moral compass whatsoever. Kitchen plans are sounding good. I too would prefer the subway tiles to the square white ones. WELL DONE on your weight loss. I should follow your lead.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it an awful thing to say out loud? I always horrify myself when I think the same. As far as weight loss, you just keep trekking around like you do...that will keep you lean!
DeleteCongratulations on the weight loss! I'll bet that was a good feeling.
ReplyDeleteI spent this whole weekend barely thinking about the shitshow in Washington, choosing instead to work outside in my garden in the beautiful spring sunshine. Last night when I finally had a peek at the news and social media, I had an almost visceral reaction to just seeing Trump's name...just this awful dread and anxiety rising up me almost immediately. I turned it all back off.
Happy 50th, Jennifer! It's not so much the weight loss for me as the importance of maintaining my health. I do not want to be limited and unhealthy.
DeleteNever knew there was such a thing as black grout - good idea, will never look dirty!!
ReplyDeleteThey actually say that it is easier to keep care of, that it does not stain.
DeleteI saw somewhere on substack (probably MeidasTouch) that the picture of JD and Usha getting off the plane in Greenland ... they were waving to nothing. There was no one there to greet them. Talk about clowns.
ReplyDeleteI saw the Meidas Touch film. The thing is, they were asked not to come. The entourage was not welcomed, although Usha had been initially. JD Vance and Waltz were not wanted in the country, and that was made very clear. The three day visit, from Thursday to Saturday was shortened to 3 hours because no one would host them. They showed up at an American base, pushed their agenda, ate, and left.
DeleteElon has stolen all of our information and took away several goverment contracts and gave them to his company. Maybe by May he will leave because he has everything he came after at America's expense.
ReplyDeleteI imagine that who ever replaces him will simply continue down the same destructive path.
DeleteYour days where you don't get a lot done are like my weeks where I feel like I knocked it out of the park. I do like the dark grout from a practical perspective, and with squares it might be a bit busy?

Well, the decision has been made. I don't dislike it. I was surprised that Tim had strong thoughts on it though.
DeleteGlad to hear you're getting a little more variety in your diet. You have really worked hard on taking care of yourself this year. I admire that. I agree with Tim and everyone else here- the subway tiles will look good.
ReplyDeleteLuckily, I do like salads. If it were only myself, I do have to say that I'd probably never cook again. I'd have salad every night!
DeleteTomorrow is T day and the [false] hope is that the orange bastard will capitulate once again. So yesterday I went to Costco and really stocked up. It was busier than Christmas there so I wasn’t the only one doing the same thing. The only USA product I bought was Boost, and when it is gone I will do without. People were still looking at labels and rejecting American products. I have noticed that the stores have sourced a lot of the products from South Africa, Mexico, Morocco, Spain etc. I hope more feminine products will be made in Canada. I also heard that you might have a TP shortage as the raw ingredient, pulp comes from Canada. Don’t know if that is true. Funny but a lot of our TP is from America, but not what I buy. I love the white tiles with black grout idea. You and Tim seem to sort everything out in the end to both of your satisfaction. We are having days of rain now also. Muddy dog paw season has arrived. Gigi
ReplyDeleteHoly cow, it is raining here as well, and the clay-ey ground and the new house makes it difficult to walk. I bought a boot scraper for outside, the idea being to reduce the mud inside. We don't have dogs, but it's sure a bad time of the year anyway.
DeleteI have an ogee pattern of white tiles with gray grout and I love it. The contractor thought it was weird to use darker grout but it looks good.
ReplyDeleteAnd the US remains a hot mess sadly. Very odd that DOGE doesn't do something about wasteful spending with regards to golfing:)
I never really thought about it, and I don't know how Tim got the idea, but once he had it in his head, that was that. He wanted what he wanted. Since I did not really care one way or the other, I just let it happen.
DeleteYou'll find a use for the square white tiles one day, if not now!
ReplyDeleteSpeaking as someone living in the UK we don't regard Americans as the enemy, just the hooligan in charge and his hooligan sidekicks.
I must admit I do look at him as he's talking and mutter - God, could you send just one little massive terminal stroke, please?
I will admit to thinking some pretty awful things...I mean, surely, he's not immortal?
DeleteWell done on all counts. Success breeds success. Black grout sounds good.
ReplyDeleteI never realized it was a 'thing', but I admit that the look grows on me.
DeleteIt's quite a commitment to pick out new house stuff; I had to make choices when I remodeled my bathrooms and it was tough. There were certain items that I fell in love with instantly (lighting and a mirror) but I struggled over tile. I can hardly believe what's happening and that there are any people who aren't repulsed and terrified by it.
ReplyDeleteIt's something I don't understand either Margaret. I will never understand it.
DeleteI envy your weight loss..mine has crept back on....I've slipped from walking or cycling most days like I was in NZ
ReplyDeleteWell, let's face it, Gwynneth...the weather in Scotland right now is not so accomodating as the weather was in New Zealand!
DeleteIf the square tiles were free you have wasted nothing? We have tickets booked to visit V's mother in August - flying Air Canada as that way we can go via Vancouver and right to San Diego. Hoping to goodness that the menace is a memory by then.
ReplyDeleteA very distant cousin (Australian) who is smoking the hokum pipe shared something re musk last night and I forced myself to hold fire. She got snoozed (she spends most of our online relationship there)
I think that's the thing I find most discouraging, Jeanie. That so many people think this is great. One blogger thinks he's a genius, but at the same time is very outraged by what she perceives as classism in her own society, the rich getting richer, the poor getting poorer. The next breath, she's praising tRUMP and Musk as they do exactly the same thing.
DeleteSo much can change between now and August, but I have no real hope that the orange menace will be gone by then. I'd love to be wrong about that, though.
Congrats on making your goals, your dedication is admirable! Never would have considered black grout, but I have to say I like it!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure where Tim saw it, but he was the one who pushed for it. It was an unexpected change, but I think it's fine.
DeleteThat white subway tile with the black grout will look really nice with the black appliances and sink, etc. Good you have a place to still use the white square tiles.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the weight loss. I hope it shows up on the tests in the future.
I never heard about Elon leaving in May. I wonder when he decided that? Maybe with all the Tesla protests? I won't believe it until I see it. And even then...he could be right back. They all change their minds every two seconds. I am soul-weary over all of this destruction of our country. Overhwelming! :(
Sometimes, I don't think I can stand another day of chaos...but then...well...I have no choice in the matter.
DeleteI am sure Elon will leave this position. There is a limit of how long he can do it without a hearing. Trumpie poo will just create a new position or department for him and run out that clock.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about these home improvement stores. We bought "everything" we needed for the bathroom in December, before tarriffs. But it seems like we are back at the store every week since. . . .
I am so proud of you! You are really working so hard to get your health in order. I hope you have great results at the doctor. Your willpower is fantastic.
This is your forever home! If a $100 worth of extra subway tiles makes it perfect, it is what it is. I do think they will look terrific with the black grout. But what is really great is that now you are working on YOUR house! I can't wait to see photos.
Please, God, let Elon leave DOGE in May. I never want to see that man's face again.
ReplyDeleteFunny how the right-wing media hammered Joe Biden for going to Delaware and/or Rehoboth, which is a heck of a lot closer and cheaper than Mar-a-Lago. But on Trump, crickets.
The subway tile looks great and I think it's well worth the investment, since you didn't pay anything for the alternative! (Easy for me to say, I know. :) )
