Entertaining Myself.

Just for giggles, I responded to a truck for sale. It was a very new truck, a luxury model, all the bells and whistles. The pictures were listed under one name, but interestingly enough the email address featured another name altogether.

They were asking $3700.

Any hindend could see that was a scam. But this hindend was looking for a laugh. FAFO. So. I did.

I responded to the ad with a question: 'Where is this truck located?'

I received a response.

Hi

Thanks for the email! The 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 are available, price is $3,700  . Transmission: Automatic 4 speed ,mileage 123,370 , engine 6.0 gas Console, map lights, extendable folding rear view mirrors and sliding rear window.  Optional 17" factory rims with low milage Cooper tires. This Truck belonged to my husband who unfortunately died, this it's the only reason for selling. Let me know if you are interested in buying them and I'll send you more details. A local pick is available if not, shipping isn't a problem. I can send some extra pics if you wish.

Because I do love a good laugh, I responded.

Once again, I replied, "Where is this truck located?"

Hi again
After my husband's funeral, I moved to my parents home in Billings, Mt, got a job here. The truck are already here in Billings and the transaction will be done through eBay. They will handle the payment and paper exchange. The truck are ready to be delivered in case a pick up is not possible. You will have free delivery (got a shipping voucher through them) and 5 days to test and inspect it before I receive any money.Attached you can find more pictures!

Thanks

Of course I wasn't clicking on any attachments, but because I still loving a laugh, I responded:

Well, no. We'd probably just fly out to get it. We've got relatives not far from there. It would be a nice visit and we could drive back. Address please?

 Hi again

If you want to buy it, please reply with your full name, shipping address and phone #. I will forward your details to eBay and they will contact you with all the info on how to purchase it.

Thanks

Please note that this email address was already flagged as spam and I was enjoying myself:

Surely you don't expect me to give you money for a truck before we have seen it, right?

And once again Mary Johnson responded with her same old tired reply:

 Hi again

If you want to buy it, please reply with your full name, shipping address and phone #. I will forward your details to eBay and they will contact you with all the info on how to purchase it.

Thanks

So...because this hindend was getting tired of games, I replied once more.

But...if I fly there to see the truck before giving you the money, why does ebay need to be involved at all? I have relatives in Montana and could combine the trip with a chance to visit family. Bottom line: I wish to look the truck over before giving you the money. I have never heard of ebay working like this. Ebay provides a site for a seller to post things, but it is the seller who ships. Plus, I saw this ad on facebook marketplace, which is different from ebay.

I guess Mary Johnson did not want to sell her truck. She has not responded for some time now.

RUDE!!!

But anyway, I did actually get something done today. We were up at the crack of dawn (well...sort of...) and we scrubbed and spiffed up the apartment. I should take a picture of it. I washed windows and scrubbed walls, pulled out appliances and got underneath. I refreshed the floors. Tim touched up the paint. Tomorrow morning, the carpet cleaners are coming in at 9. I'll wipe down the oven while they're doing their thing. Tim is going to put a coat of polyurethane on the cupboards. I've got 4 more windows to wash. Then the apartment will be move in ready, which is good news, because the prospective tenant wants to see it Wednesday morning.

The woman who wants the rehab so badly is coming to the house with her father tomorrow. Her bank has said she will need a co-signer, but she said her dad is quite excited to see the house, so that sounds promising.

I told her about the furniture. She was excited about that, too and is coming over to our house to see it after she's done with her father. I told her to bring along her little boy too.

She's so hopeful, and that touches both our hearts. I would love to see this work out.

  1. You remind me of my brother who used to play those games with telemarketers. I think the funny part is that the scammer can't keep track of ebay and marketplace. The unfunny part is that unfortunately people keep falling for this stuff.
Gosh, you were busy at the apartment! I hope it all works out for the single mom. My fingers are crossed too.

    1. It's cheap entertainment, that's for sure. The thing I will never understand is how people don't see through these schemes right away. Maybe I am just more suspicious than most.

  2. Glad the single mom still has her Dad in her life. So many get estranged from family in their attempt to be independent. Hope it's a good match for everyone. Linda in Kansas

    1. Sometimes it works the other way too. People get independent because they can't depend on their family.

  3. Oh yes! I would love for her and her little boy to get the house! Like I said, a perfect last big sale. Just warms the heart. Fingers crossed. :)

  4. I used to sometimes bait scammers like that over the phone. I don't know if he is still around but there was a YouTuber who would interact with scammers in India. At times he would pin down where there were working, their real names and all their personal details, by being very smart with technology. Some of his work led to arrests by Indian police. He also caught some local US scammers or facilitators too.

I really hope it works for the woman who is taking another look.

    1. That sounds like great fun. She's not taking another look, actually. She's hoping that her father will be impressed enough to cosign. And he's excited to see it, in her words, so really, it does sound promising.

I have a farmer friend who takes great delight in stringing along unsolicited sales callers. His favourite response to double-glazing telemarketers is "But how would I be able to hear the birds singing if your glazing is so good?"

    1. LOL. I had a friend who used to keep a list of ailments by the phone. She collected them. The more gruesome and personal, the better. She lived for the moment when the phone rang and an accented voice said, "How are you today?" and then she started talking and didn't stop until they hung up on her.

    1. I guess I've got a mean streak. I am so hopeful about this deal too. It would be an awfully nice ending to the story of 'the rehab that didn't work out for us' story.

  11. Jabblog they do...and it isn't their fault, sitting there in a call centre earning a pittance. But it can be fun stringing along the ones saying I have a problem with the system on my computer....when I don't use that system or make...

Hope the house deals go well.x

  12. Off topic here, but hope you can find this morning's appearance of Chuck Schumer on morning Joe. Eye opening. He really DID the right thing on the budget bill. He dodged Repug's trap. Dammit though, Dems really need to keep us in the loop! . Kris in Ohio

People fall for those scams all the time. But some scams are easier to identify than others.

There are times that I'm thankful that English is such a difficult language:) And I'm glad you got to mess with a scammer, so satisfying.
I hope everything works out for the young woman too.

  17. I think the truck scam probably worked better in the original Russian. Such an obvious one. There are plenty of ways to sell a truck without shipping, ffs!
I hope that house deal works out.

    1. I actually think it was probably African in origin. We have gotten an awful lot of phishing e-mails from Iran, though. You can see that from the e-mail address.

  19. It can be fun to string these people along, the same with phone hoaxers, but I usually feel it's wasted time.

  20. It's always interesting how people will believe something like this. Scammers are just the work of the devil. We get so many calls, we no longer answer the phone unless we know who is calling. If they're real, they'll leave a message. Sometimes the scammers leave messages, AI speech has really improved as of late.

  21. Well done on the scammer. When my mom was in her final years Allison & I were on constant alert to keep her safe from these people. Thank God she didn't have internet access. I too would like to see things work out for the woman with the little boy.

  22. I've read somewhere not to do that as now they know you have an active email account and they will sell that info to others. Same with answering the phone when you don't know who is calling.

  23. You are so funny, taking on the scammer. As someone who shirks confrontation that is not my idea of enjoyable, but I'm glad it amused you. :)

  24. I do that if a salesman calls, and I happen to pick up. I ask question after question, I like to see if I can keep them on the line 12 or 15 minutes. I then tell them I am not interested at all, and they want to lower the price. I think maybe I save 1 or 2 other people from getting the call if I keep him busy.
