The big decision that we reached was that we were going to sell the rehab, as is. It has a new roof. New siding. Blown in insulation. New windows. Rough wiring is done. Plumbing. Water lines. Drywall is done. Most of the drywall is finished. We have a great many of the light fixtures. The ceramic tile. The clawfoot tub. The original porcelain sink.
But. We just can't anymore.
It was a hard decision to reach, but the fact is that working on two properties simultaneously means that we are slowing down progress on both of them.
So today, we spent getting the tools and things out of the rehab house, with the idea of calling a realtor.
We took a load of stuff to the new house, and I said to Tim, "You know, I wonder what would happen if we just put it up on the local garage sale site." We took some pictures.
Most houses in our area are sold word of mouth. My neighbor's son was house hunting after a divorce and a mutual friend's neighbor passed. I told them to give it a week, call the nephew and see if they want to skip a realtor fee. He is moving in April 1.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter and her husband heard a neighbor was selling. They stopped by on a walk and moved in 2 months later.
I am sure you will sell to a nice family or person and what a relief it will be. You can focus on your forever home and enjoy!
That’s terrific! Is this house near your new build? If so, choose yourselves some great neighbors!

I can imagine that was a very hard decision to make, but well done to you both for making it. More stress of a different kind at the moment, but hopefully a big relief too.
ReplyDeleteWishing you luck with finding a buyer - I hope the process is straight-forward and you find the right person willing to pay the right price soon.
I forgot to include that I think that you meet the definition of the old saying "no flies on you", because you don't wait around once you have decided to do something.
DeleteWise, I think. It looks so nice, and I am sure everything has been properly done.
ReplyDeleteMy brother sold his house last year without an agent to a former workmate. She heard was up for sale and made contact with him.
It sounds like maybe it was weighing on Tim as much as it was on you, even though he wasn't saying anything.
ReplyDeleteGood to come to a decision that will make things so much easier. Now you can enjoy finishing your own new home
ReplyDeleteRelief! Best wishes for a good sale x
ReplyDeleteIt looks great and will make someone a fantastic home once they have finished it to their taste. Selling it will give you both so much more time to spend on finishing off your own future home and I'm glad you were able to see the path ahead clearly.
ReplyDeleteThat will be a load of stress gone and you'll probably both feel so much lighter when it's sold.
ReplyDeleteWow it looks a lovely house and with all the major work done should be a perfect project for someone to finish off. You can focus on your home now, you post sounds much happier.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a great idea provided you get the price you want and get a legitimate buyer. The house looks very nice already. Gigi
ReplyDeleteI am happy for you Debbie. My husband and I have many similar stories in our past when we have changed a plan or, as my Mom would have said, "Jackie set her foot down" ha ha! Take care.
ReplyDeleteThis is great. Talk about taking a load off.
ReplyDeleteThat's wonderful and what a beautiful home for someone to finish.
ReplyDeleteHURRAY!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great and now the buyer can put their own touches on finishing it. Good decision!
ReplyDeleteYou made a wise decision here. It's not fun anymore when It's difficult and progress is slow. It looks like a house that has great appeal.
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy for you! There comes a time in our lives when we need to sit back and start to enjoy what we have and not work ourselves to death. I just retired last week and it has been hard to make myself sit down and read a book or watch a show. I have spent the last 48 years working at something! Looking forward to seeing pictures of your new home when it is finished.
ReplyDeleteWhat a relief!! The place is beautiful, so it isn't a surprise that it could sell quickly. :)
ReplyDeleteFirst, I'm so glad you spoke up. That's a big weight lifted and you guys will be able to finish up your house.
ReplyDeleteSecond, wow, what a beautiful house that rehab house is. The woodwork is gorgeous. I would buy the house, but it would be way too expensive here, a million I'm guessing.
Full speed ahead on your forever home.
Even your blog buddies are relieved! Totally cool. Now the next owner or tenet can paint and finish as they desire. Nice results! Hooray! Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteI find it very easy to take on too much.
ReplyDeleteWow, Debby, it seems as though it was meant to be! There comes a time, and it seems to be in our 60's for most of us, when we decide that enjoying life is a GOOD thing. Most of us were taught that our worth is bound up in our productivity - work and work hard, or you are considered lazy. I've seen how that plays out for most people - they work and then drop dead and didn't get to enjoy what they had left of their lives. It's profoundly sad, and such a waste. We are all relieved for you both!
ReplyDeleteWell done! This has got to be a load off! That's a pretty house, you should have no trouble selling it.
ReplyDeleteDebby! It's a gorgeous house. Look at that wood, really pretty. Here's hoping it sells quickly to nice people and you two can move on with the new house. Speaking up for yourself has changed the course of your future and Tim's. Good on you.
