Go Ahead. Make My Day

That single solitary bottle of beer at bedtime continues to be a great help to Tim.  The first day, he slept the clock around, the second, he slept nearly 7 hours, and last night, although he had problems falling asleep, once asleep, he slept soundly. I got William off to school. Tim is sleeping still.

It is a big relief to both of us. He sounds more himself. My brother-in-law is in the Dominican Republic building houses right now. My sister was off work, so she stopped in. We ate lunch at played a couple games of Scrabble and had a couple hours of heart to heart. Both things did me as much good as the sleep has done for Tim.

Last Saturday, I got a bright idea. Turkey! Who doesn't fall asleep on Thanksgiving day after a good turkey dinner? I always pick up two or three turkeys for the freezer after the holidays when they are on sale, so I grabbed one and put it in the fridge to begin thawing. Although Tim discovered the miracle of beer, with a half thawed turkey in the fridge, I was committed.

Yesterday was the day, and I tried a new recipe, infusing olive oil with rosemary, garlic cloves and slices of lemon over night. I worked the skin away from the breast of the turkey, and stuffed that with slices of lemon and poured some infused olive oil in that pocket. It was supposed to be stuffed with quartered oranges and lemons, but it seemed like such a waste. After baking, the fruit is discarded. But I tried a new stuffing recipe and just popped it in a slow oven and basted it with the olive oil infusion.

It was great.

A couple days ago, our landline rang. It was an unknown number, but I was expecting a number of return calls, so I didn't feel comfortable not answering it. A deeply accented voice began talking about my auto insurance. I said, "We are not looking to change our insurance now. Thanks." and disconnected the call.

Within seconds the phone was ringing again. It was a different number with the same area code and prefix. I answered again because it unusual for them to call back. The same heavily accented voice said, "This is not a sales call. I am calling to give you information only, and I would ask please to make my day by listening."

I didn't answer, but I was intrigued enough to stay on the line. There was a pause, and the man began going on about Allstate Auto Insurance. "Now. How many vehicles do you own?"

I disconnected again. You never know what information is being gleaned from whatever information you might give them. I had no idea who I was talking to.

Within seconds, the phone was ringing again. Same area code, same prefix. different last four digits. I did not bother to take the call, and walked around all afternoon with the guilty knowledge that I'd had an opportunity to make someone's day and did not do it.

  1. I'm glad the beer is working for Tim and he is getting some sleep (you too). It's helpful to have your sister close so she can visit. Today is my sister's birthday and I am lucky that we live in the same town.
Hope Tim continues to improve and your life gets back to normal!

    1. My sister lives about a half hour from me. She had to come into town. I am a lucky person.

  2. I refuse to answer the phone anymore, at least our landline. I just let it silently ring (ringer is muted) and go to the answering machine. 99% of the people who call never leave a message.

    1. It's so hard gettin calls through for the medical stuff. You have to leave a message. They call back. If you miss the call, you have to call back and leave another message.

  3. Our landline isn't even plugged in anymore.
I am so glad that Tim is getting some sleep. Blessed sleep.

    1. Yes. You don't realize how blessed sleep is until you have miss a long stretch of it.

  4. We ditched the landline a few years ago, and we don’t miss it. It was expensive enough for a redundant appliance. On the phone, I don’t answer withheld numbers and often don’t answer if there is a number but no name. Occasionally, I have been expecting a call, and it has come through with a number but no name. In that case I have answered, and I was right to do it.

You had good news in this post about Tim and a good visit form your sister, so good on ya as they are presently wont to say these days.

    1. We would ditch the landline, but since it is a bundled deal, they'd jack up our television and wifi rates.

  5. We have to have a landline for Keith's Careline connection. Plus we have not the best mobile signal. Perhaps next time I can change to a super-fast broadband and the wi-fi will be good enough to have the mobile working without hanging out of an upstairs window! However, just had to change providers and have an 18 mth contract . . .

I am glad the beer is working, and hopefully that wonderfully-tasting turkey does the trick too. I am having home made pizza tonight.

    1. We had turkey chopped up and added to a tossed salad with cheese. It was great too. I have a pot of turkey broth going right now in a crock pot. It will be turkey white bean soup tomorrow.

  6. I'm glad the beer is working for Tim, one less worry. Heart to heart for women is probably the best medicine, especially if it's your sister who's known you your whole life.

  7. Glad to hear the evening beer is working to good effect for Tim. A good nights sleep for Tim and for you is wonderful!
    Your turkey sounds divine!
Hope William and Houdini are well.

    1. William and Houdini are well. We have a trip to Erie planned on Saturday. Tim is restless and needs to get out of the house. We're taking William and a friend to a trampoline place for 1 1/2 hour of non-stop physical activity. Tim is keen to try a wood fired pizza place on the way home. It will be a nice break.

  8. Good to hear that Tim is sleeping better. I am on the opposite end of the spectrum as I am sleeping better without beer. Granted, I wasn't stopping after just one. Take care.

  9. Good news for Tim and for you.
We have TPS, telephone preference something or other...anyhow you register your number as not wanting sales calls, landline or mobile....it works for those except for ones from overseas...and companies are fined heavily. If I do get one I ask for company details, explain why, finish the call and report them. I haven't had to do that often!

  11. You should not have any guilt - maybe he could have made your day by not pressuring you (or others) - maybe you had a personal crisis - maybe you were ill or upset ... what right does he have to keep calling... he's self righteous and selfish I'd say,

    1. I don't actually have any guilt at all, but it was just such an odd phrasing. I've never heard a spam call be (number one) so persistant and (number two) asking me 'please to make his day.'

  12. They are called nuisance calls for good reasons. We decided last night to unplug our landline as we never answer it because it is always unknown numbers. Here we add our phone numbers to the 'Do not call' register which has stopped local charity begging calls and others but not the overseas scammers who disguise their numbers as local.

Proper sleep is always good for one's health, however you get it.

A good chat over scrabble is a brilliant way to spend a few hours.
I just hang up on the telemarketers now.
