Shopped Until We Dropped

It was a pretty quiet day here. Tim decided that he did not want to go hunting today, so we stopped over at the lawyer's office to sign some papers.

We headed off to feed the kittens down at the new house.

Tim wanted to go to Titusville when we were done. I asked if we could hit a thrift store. What a score that was. He found a new leather belt for himself. I found a Land's End wool coat, egg plant color that matches very well with the scarf I found a couple weeks ago, for $8.99. I found some books for the box of books I'm putting together for Christmas. You know...just browsing...and then...

This canister set was a reproduction jadeite set and it is greener than it appears in this picture, but...

it will match perfectly with the wallpaper...

...in the new pantry

It was $6.99 for the set, and I could see them so perfectly on the hoosier cabinet,
that they were in my cart in an eyeblink.

We also bought some more Christmas gifts today which was fun too.

We stopped at a grocery store to pick up some pepperoni to make pizza for supper tonight. I had a loaf of Italian bread which needed to be used up, and so I figured that I'd split it, top it with sauce and onion and peppers and pepperoni and cheese and have a pizza. Tim decided he'd rather have it topped with sausage and so we went back to the meat coolers. We found a rope of Italian sausage. I said, "Well, that can be split up, and it will make 4 or 5 meals for us. He said, "That's a good buy for $9. We glanced through their meat, and were shocked to see pork chops being sold for $1.49 a pound. They had family packs ranging between $6 and $8. I counted the pork chops and said, "Gees. A couple packages of this could break down into 6 or 7 meals for you and me." They were very well trimmed which we liked. Tim said, "You need to pick a couple of those up."

Once the packages were opened up at home, and repackaged into smaller portions for the two of us, we had 11 more packages of meat to put in the freezer, and as ridiculous as it sounds, it is something that makes us both feel good.

The all important giggle!

This gem was brought to my attention by Gigi from Canada.

She posted it on John Gray's blog, and I shamelessly stole it because I laughed until I cried. Tim came out to watch it and laughed as hard as I did.

So. Here's your giggle for the day.

  2. You have the best luck thrifting! You've had the kind of day retirees are supposed to have, here and there doing fun stuff. I can get excited putting bargains into the freezer, too, you're not alone there.
Oh my gosh, that woman! She had me laughing for sure.

When I started the video… I thought this wasn’t a good prank because I thought she’d get a heart attack BUT then I couldn’t stop laughing. I have tears running down my cheek! Oh gosh!

  13. I get the same thrill from getting good meat at good prices, and breaking up the packages and vacuum sealing them. We bought a new upright freezer with drawers and deep shelves so that we could keep our finds more organized, but dang, it's a job to keep it that way! Every now and then I have to take stuff out of all 3 (yes, 3!) freezers and reorganize. I agree, Chippy is a yeller, and that would have killed me!

    1. I had a friend whose father was a yeller. Come to think of it, they were Italian too. When I was a kid, I was always terrified. Her father would be yelling and 10 kids would just be milling around ignoring him. He was just non-stop. In my house when our father was yelling, someone was about to get hurt.

In later years, I read about a woman who was murdered by her husband. In my eyes, the warning signs were all there. One detail of the story stood out though. Her sister was talking about when they were kids and talking about the time that somebody had gotten so mad they had taken a kitchen knife and was chasing someone else around. It clicked then, for the first time. The poor dead woman had not registered the scary behavior of her husband as scary because she'd lived with this sort of behavior all her life.

  14. I love your new canisters. As to the video- I must disagree. I have nightmares about being in a moving car that I can't control. They could have given her a heart attack. But that's just me.

    1. No, it is NOT just you, actually. I have always had nightmares about being in a car driving down the road with no driver. I'm in the back seat when I notice this, and there are always other people in the back seat, and I'm trying to push through them to get my hands on the steering wheel. Sometimes I do manage it before I wake up, but I always wake up before I can get my whole self up there to get my foot on the brakes.

  15. I do the same when I find meat at good prices. Once I even found a large package mismarked at Costco, a very good day.

    1. They've pulled many a prank on her and filmed it for the show. I find myself wondering if she figures things out at some point and just continues her over the top response because 'it makes good tv'.

    2. That was my first thought was that surely the meat was mismarked...but it wasn't! All of it was marked at that $1.49 price. Pretty amazing to figure that worked out to less that $2 per two serving meal. That is quite a bargain.

  16. Good job on the shopping bargains. No on the video. I couldn't watch it all the way through as I felt sorry for her. That would be terrifying!

  19. Pork prices tend to be very cyclic compared to other meats and right now, it has been very cheap. We cooked pork chops many times this summer, the first time in a handful of years. Pork was also very cheap about the same time my parents started raising hogs back in the late 80's. My brother and I always had a freezer full of pork in our college apartment that we shared.

All is Revealed

I was very excited to get my sister's gift to her. I'd been keeping this secret for an awful long time. She had the lid but her dish...
