Today, I do feel as if I've over done things just the slightest. The PT guy was pretty interesting. I think that he was trying to assess how far I would push myself. I got 8 degrees more flexion than I did two days ago. My extension is as good as it gets. I did the stupid exercises.😉 I did the stupid walking. 😉 As we passed by the bottom of the stairs, he asked if I had done the stairs. I hadn't. I didn't even think that was a good idea, but... up the stairs I went, 15 steps, and back down them again. He said, "I honestly would never have believed you are just one week out."
I'd made stewed chicken gravy for supper tonight, something that can be chopped while sitting, and dropped in a pot and left to simmer gently until it is supper time. After Josh left, Tim and I ate.
Today is my 68th birthday, and you know, it just felt like a special day. Tim was watching tRUMP blathering on about south African genocide. I was amazed at Cyril Ramaphosa's self control. ("I'm sorry I do not have a plane to give you." Cripes. I just about fell off the couch.) I was also pleased to see that ABC called it out right in the headline, that tRUMP was pushing a false narrative. CBS and NBC did not.
I said, "You know, I want a donut. It's been since January that I've had a dessert, and I just feel like today is a day to celebrate." He said, "Do you want to come with?" I discovered that I did, which may have been pushing it just one step too far.
But...did I tell you how long it has been since I've eaten a donut?
Depending on tomorrow, we might just go to the new house. There's plenty of little things that I can do that don't involve walking around and it has been over a week.
You're doing terrific! Now I'll say what everyone said to me: don't overdo it!!
ReplyDeleteWell...a cold is slowing me down today.
DeleteOh Debby! Showing some nice leg stitching and, clever girl, displaying that awesome leg extension. I'm thrilled for your rapid recovery. Now…don't over do it! You would hate to have a set back. But I'm talking to a woman on a donut sugar high. 😄 enjoy … Kris in Ohio
ReplyDeleteToday is a much slower day.
DeleteI'll repeat the chorus from the first two comments: don't overdo it!
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work, Debby.
Oh, and Happy Birthday to you!!
DeleteThanks, Ellen.
DeleteYou know you body so when it tells you to slow down and don't do something listen. Give yourself some time, you may feel better but you are still healing and building your self back. Good news to hear how far you have come though, just don't push it.
ReplyDeleteI do feel like I will know when it is time to stop.
DeleteThat's quite some wound and it looks so healthy.
ReplyDeleteA very happy birthday and a doughnut is a good way to celebrate.
Our non commercial news service here was unusually upfront about #47 repeating falsehoods regarding South Africa.
I can't believe only ABC called the lie out.
DeleteYou are doing amazing, but I join the crowd...please don't overdo it. ;)
ReplyDeleteI bet that doughnut was delicious!! :)
Oh boy...it sure was!
DeleteAnd happy birthday!!!!
ReplyDeleteYour knee..the best birthday present ever xx
ReplyDeleteMy oldest Grandaughter guessed I was 79. Made me laugh. I told her my knee was younger than she was.
DeleteHappy birthday! Glad your knee is healing so well. Cali
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteYour body is recovering quickly.
ReplyDeleteIt really is. I never expected this, but I am pretty darn happy about it.
DeleteHappy Birthday with your new knee as a present, eh? Really pretty incision. Yep, don't overdo it. (My PT for my shoulder surgery keeps telling me what NOT to do yet, that it's for 2 weeks later.) A donut is a good reward. Go SLOW. Best to sit and supervise. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteThe PT did laugh when I said that there was plenty I could do without stepping onto a ladder. "Yeah...probably stay off the ladders!"
DeleteGreat leg extension given the short tie since the surgery! tRump is so dumb that the SA President's dig went right over his head, totally missed it. I'll echo what others are saying, don't overdo it.
ReplyDelete"time"
DeleteHeavens, Jim. You sure do not need to correct typos. My brain does that automatically. I never even noticed. not much differently from djt, I guess.
DeleteI'm so impressed with your recovery. That is a great whanging incision. Hip replacement incisions have gotten smaller, I guess not the knee. I can't remember the last donut I ate. It has been years. I hope it was a really good donut.
ReplyDeleteIt was a good one. Filled with Bavarian cream and covered with chocolate. If you are going to break your diet, just go big. Once.
DeleteHappy Birthday and Hurrah for the great progress! A donut sounds like the perfect treat. You and I are close to the same age - I was born April 1958. After my recent doctor visit, she wants me to start taking cholesterol meds and also possibly increase my Levothyroxine for thyroid but suggested testing it again in 8 weeks. I told her I want to try changing my diet first and she agreed to check my cholesterol in 3 months. I am starting to feel like I am becoming my Mother!
ReplyDeleteYou have hit it on the head, Jackie. I really saw myself headed down a road that my mother went down 14 years ago. Scared the mess out of me.
DeleteHappy birthday to you, Debby! And I’m so very happy to hear you’re doing so well! Hope you enjoyed your donut to the fullest!🥰xo, Rigmor
ReplyDeleteI sure did. The memory needs to last me until my next birthday!
DeleteYou are absolutely amazing with this knee replacement. the faster you get going the better off you will be. Just be careful to not push too far and end up hurting yourself. I hate the look of those big scars.
ReplyDeleteI will take the scar. Maybe I will take up speed walking in my old age!
DeleteHappy Birthday, Debbie! 🍩with a candle in it!!!
ReplyDeleteI did not want to waste time looking for a candle. Yummo!
DeleteHappy birthday! It looks like you're doing great!
ReplyDeleteI am! I am thrilled every time I realize that fact.
DeleteHAPPY BIRTHDAY! You are setting a wonderful example for me!
ReplyDeleteDo not under estimate those very first hours. Make sure you have Susan. Seriously. The best advice I can give you.
DeleteHappy Birthday, Deb! Glad to hear that your recovery is moving apace. Don’t forget some much needed R & R.
ReplyDeleteBonnie in Minneapolis
I am having a slow day today!
DeleteHappy birthday! You are doing so well. You deserve a candle for that donut. Best wishes JennyP
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jenny!
DeleteMany happy returns Debby and you birthday present is a rapidly recovering knee. I adore doughnuts but always walk past them. Hope you buy half a dozen!
ReplyDeleteHECK no! One donut. If I bought half a dozen, I would have eaten half a dozen. Best to avoid the temptation.
DeleteHappy Birthday Debbie.
ReplyDeleteGlad your day did feel special.
Best wishes MarieQ
Thanks Marie.
DeleteHappy Birthday for yesterday.
ReplyDeleteKeep healing and moving gently - it's amazing how quickly you are able to do stuff.
Something that I did not expect at all. Happy birthday to me!
DeleteHappy Birthday and I think you are doing amazingly well with your recovery now you seem to have the pain under control
ReplyDeleteIt is.
Delete‘False narrative’? Really? Wow! You seem like a nice woman, but. I’m stunned. Just..wow!
ReplyDeleteMary in SA.
You must be new here, "Mary". Feel free to read elsewhere if you don't like what you see.
DeleteMary, strong emotion does not over ride fact. When you are ready to have a discussion of facts, you are welcome to provide them. I am prepared with my own.
DeleteYour scare looks amazing, my sister had the same op and she was not mobile for ages, well done, but don't do anything silly.
ReplyDeleteI feel as if yesterday's PT was almost giving permission. Activity as tolerated.
DeleteWell.....I did tell you not to overdo it!! Happy Birthday anyway.
ReplyDeleteWorking off that donut!
DeleteHappy 68th, Debby! Again, I believe that the fact that you were so physically active, and had your diet well in hand before surgery is why you're doing so well! I worked in PT for years and those who were sedentary, and had poor diets (causes inflammation) struggled for a long time after surgery. You've really got this!
ReplyDeleteI think I do. I feel like I do. Except now I have a cold! Argh.
DeleteHappy Happy Birthday, Debbie! Good for you for having a donut, I mean seriously...you haven't had a dessert since JANUARY? Good lord, how do I get some of that self-control?! You should be very proud of yourself! :)
ReplyDeleteI have not. In a moment of weakness I did have 11 chocolate chips.
DeleteHappy birthday! What a gift to yourself, a new knee. And a donut!
ReplyDeleteYou had staples? Interesting how doctors differ on methods. Mine was dissolving sutures, and the scar is nearly invisible now.
I overdid it a lot the first two weeks, out of necessity. Steps were never a problem, thankfully. It sounds like you did brilliantly!
One thing I wasn't old and it seemed to be true, was that the effects of the surgery anesthetic don't wear away completely for a couple weeks. So a patient still gets some residual "help" from it, as well, of course, as the side effects. My early weeks were so sleep-deprived I honestly don't know if that was true or not, I was basically in a haze, justbtrying to function. After having 5 kids by natural childbirth, I figured I could handle any pain, but this sure wasnt just any pain, lol! I hope you recovery keeps moving on as quickly as your first week!
I will admit that I went into it with much the same attitude. I was unprepared.
DeleteThose scars look very nice. Mine looked the same but I just looked and mine have faded away to not noticeable at all. Keep moving but lay off the heavy work. Give yourself the time to heal from within. And a very happy birthday to you Debby. Gigi
ReplyDeleteI wonder what this will look like once the staples are out! I will live with a scar, though.
DeleteHappy birthday! You have earned a sweet treat - why not have another?
ReplyDeleteWhoo boy. Nope. That is a slippery slope.
DeleteI'm glad you're making such good progress! That's great news. Moving around as long as you're comfortable seems like it's probably a good approach.
ReplyDeleteThe South Africa thing was ridiculous. I was surprised Ramaphosa even came, surely knowing what he was in for. How long will it be before foreign leaders decline to visit the White House for the public reprimand of the moment?
The statement was made that he came to the white house expecting to be part of a show. He acquitted himself well.
DeleteYour incision site looks to be healing perfectly. No swelling or redness. Good for you! Yes. Do what you feel like doing and DON'T PUSH IT! Hahahahahahahahahaha! Sure.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday! I think a doughnut was absolutely warranted. My goodness! Or a cupcake. Something sweet and very pleasing. Your birthday is a special day.
Oh, it isn't a special day, so much as it was a day that seemed filled with cause to celebrate. Some days are like that.
DeleteFirst off, happy birthday!! Enjoy that donut!! Wow! That is quite the incision. Keep up the good work and a speedy recovery to you. Take care.
ReplyDeleteI really think this is going to be quite a life changing thing for me. I can't even imagine what it will be like not to have a bad knee.
DeleteYour incision is looking great, glad you're feeling better. Donuts can be so helpful. Happy Birthday.
ReplyDeleteLol. It was a good donut.
DeleteHappy Birthday, Debby!! It sounds like you are doing great! The incision is looking good, too.
ReplyDeleteI think so too. I am really happy.
DeleteHappy birthday and best wishes for continued fast healing!
ReplyDeleteThis progress is a terrific birthday gift.
DeleteI am so glad that you got to enjoy your happy birthday donut!!
ReplyDeleteIt was my first trip out of the house. A quest, if you will!

DeleteGosh, your recovery is nothing short of a miracle (and a result of following orders, pt and being well prepared :) ) Good for you! I bet it is such a relief to be this far out and improving. And you deserved a donut!!!! You are an inspiration!!!
ReplyDeleteOh Miss Merry...I really could not be more amazed at the progress. It does feel miraculous.
DeleteHappy birthday sexy lady showing her leg above the knee on the internet! :)
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I would use the term 'sexy'...but by gosh, it will hold me up in strong weather!
DeleteHappy Birthday Debby, I hope that donut tasted as good as you remembered. You are one tough little booger— and look at you, showing off your « bling »!
ReplyDelete5 more days and I will get the bling removed.
DeleteGreat bling indeed, and probably expensive. (This comment gave me a good giggle!)
DeleteMost expensive bling I ever had.
Delete‘Cause you’re worth it.
DeleteStaples are a girl's best friend?
DeleteHappy 68th birthday! Your determination and positive spirit shine through every word. It’s inspiring to hear how you’re pushing yourself carefully but bravely with physical therapy—those extra degrees of flexion are a real victory! I love the simple joys you described, like stewed chicken gravy and finally enjoying a well-deserved donut after months.
ReplyDeleteYour sharp observations about the news and Cyril Ramaphosa’s calm response add a nice touch of realism. Here’s wishing you continued healing, many happy moments at the new house, and lots more special days ahead. Thanks for sharing such an honest and uplifting update!
Can we be friends?
Greetings from Indonesia
You're doing great, Debby.
ReplyDeleteSo are you, friend.
DeleteToday is Saturday - hope you didn't do something you should not have done, and the healing is continuing as it should be. You are a good one to push yourself past normal boundaries, so here's hoping all is well.
ReplyDeleteAll is well, Ana. I caught a very minor cold that derailed me for a couple days.
