Back, Bathrooms, and Hummingbirds.

Today started out kind of jumping around. First of all, I really tweaked my back moving a shelving unit Saturday. It wasn't that it was all that heavy. I think that I just twisted wrong. It initially hurt, but working in the damp and cold aggravated it something awful. With a bad right knee and knotted muscles on the left side of my spine, I was really in a pickle. I had to lift my legs with my hands to get into the car.

I tried to avoid making things worse the next day, but predictably, that did not work at all. I pulled in a lawn chair to 'back butter' the tile for the bathroom, but even reaching those out to Tim did not help the situation.

Tim bought a heating pad for me, and I used a lot of Ben-Gay, but by bedtime, I have a confession. I had one temazepam left from the last time that I twisted my back wrong, and lord knows how old that was, but I took it anyway. I went to bed with my heating pad.

I am pleased to say that when I woke up this morning, I certainly wasn't 100%, but I could move, albeit slowly and carefully, taking special pains not to twist anything.

Tim had to go to the reassessment hearing. We bought a house for $30,000 5 or 6 years ago, and they appraised it at $138,000.  We are honestly confused by this. We expected an increase, but it is a 1140 square foot, 2 bed, 1 bath house that they listed  as being a two family dwelling (how that mistake was made is not clear). They also said that it had a fireplace. It does not. It is a very old house which sits over a hand dug earthen basement. The basement is not a useable space at all. It's sole purpose being to access the drains and pipes of the house.

She made the changes, but the thing she was most interested in was the neighbor's house. Like us, he owns multiple houses, which are poorly maintained, the porches covered with garbage and debris. The woman taking the notes at the meeting advised Tim to take those pictures to the next meeting, that they will certainly impact the property values of our houses. This neighbor has long said that he is friends with an official on the zoning committee and so he will never be cited. I guess, in the end that turned out to be good news for the neighborhood.

So. Tim felt better.

We had to get down to the new house right away. Tim had set a trap for the raccoon. We caught one, but that very night, another helpful raccoon wandered in to do a quality assurance check of the cat food at 3:30 AM. Tim set the trail cam up to keep an eye on the livetrap, and sure enough, there was something in the trap this morning. It was Tiger, who I hadn't seen for a while.

When we got there, he meowed at us. We opened the door to the trap and he followed me into the garage to get breakfast.

Then we got to work. We finished the tiling. Tomorrow, we will grout it.

Tim did grout the floor. I did manage to make myself useful sponging the excess grout with him later.

I heard Tim talking in the living room. A humming bird had managed to get itself inside. I picked him up gently and carried him outside, and was delighted that he sat on my fingertips for quite a while looking around in an unbothered way. Finally he flew off, straight up to the very top of a huge pine tree.

It is not a good picture because it was a quick snap with the phone.

I sent it to my sister who lives within sight of the new house. She didn't know the hummingbirds had returned, so she was delighted too.

This is her picture from last year. She was sitting on the porch enjoying a sunny evening, and this fellow flew down and landed on her toe. He sat and watched her for quite some time.
I will close with a laugh.

or this...

We bought the bead board that will go around the bottom of the bathroom walls. We will install that tomorrow, and then we'll be ready to put in the bathroom 'appliances'. Pretty excited about that.

oh...and I bought the shower curtain today.

  1. Debbie, I'm so sorry about your back and I hope it continues to improve. Meanwhile, the grout pics look wonderful, like artwork; and the hummingbird photos are incredible. I can't believe that tiny thing sat there on your fingers like that!

  2. I have never heard of hummers doing that, but I think it is radically cool. Sorry about the back: been there and done that.

    1. I've never had it happen before (and are you too old to be using 'radically cool?) It was quite a special moment though. Backs! Ay yi yi! It's much better now though, but you can bet the farm that I'm being very careful about how I move!

  4. I'm not back to blogging yet. I just returned from a 3 week trip and have to go off on another. I'll be back in June. Hopefully.

Good grief! So much happening on your end. I'm sorry about your back but glad it's feeling better now.
What an amazing photo of the hummingbird on the toe!

  5. So easy to tweak a back...commiserations!
Good to know Tiger is around..if independent...
Valuing houses...how many wouldn't have checked the details..but that was a major mistake

    1. One of the people who actually worked as part of the reassessment actually advised people to sit down with the report and contact them if there were errors. So...hopefully every one has been doing that.

The tiling is looking great. What a spiffing shower curtain!

    1. I've never seen anything like that. I was looking for something gray/black/white, and it popped up. I showed it to Tim and he said, "You need to order that!" So...I did!

    1. It is much better. I am so relieved. My biggest fear was that I was going to have to see a doctor who would have to prescribe something that would delay the knee replacement. But I haven't taken anything for it today!

  9. Be careful with your back and your knee. I'm amazed you're doing so much - and it all looks great.
How lovely to have a little bird sit on your fingertips and how nice to have Tiger back, even if only for a short while.
The water slide made me laugh - thank you.

  10. You accomplish so much I- feel lazy! Those are great photos of the hummingbirds. I have a photo framed and on my fireplace mantle of my husband's hand holding one. I never knew they would do that until one became stuck in the ceiling of our pole barn (at our previous house). Scott climbed up the ladder and rescued it. It sat on his hand while he climbed down, walked out to the feeder and then it moved over to the feeder and started to eat! All creatures are amazing. Have a good day Debby!

    1. He was clinging to the timber wall, so I just gently picked him up. He didn't resist at all. Just sat quietly on my hand. He wasn't even in a big hurry to fly away. He looked around for the longest time.

  12. At a certain age, you have to think about every non normal move you make.
"$30,000 5 or 6 years ago, and they appraised it at $138,000." OMG, what bargain housing prices, overvalued or not. Not where I live but in a similar country area to where you live, think $500,000.
    Very cute about the birds.
Bead board...I know what you mean but we call it something else, and I cannot remember what.

    2. Andrew: The average price of a house in podunk, Pennsylvania is $87 a sq. foot. On my son's side of the state, things are much, much different. In that county, the average price per sq foot is $163. That is the difference between a place that is a hot bed of industry and a place like ours that is bleeding jobs. Jaycee is right.

  13. Sorry about your back, but that's easy to do, especially with a dodgy knee already. It sounds a bit better now. Where I live even a fleeting sighting of a hummingbird makes people call each other not to miss it! To have one perch on you sounds amazing.

    1. I think that it was a strange 'lean' that did it, and it was probably due to me compensating for my knee. Hummingbirds are not all that uncommon here. They are surprisingly territorial and will dive bomb each other quite aggressively. (Talk about a Napoleon complex!) That was the first time I've ever been able to pick on up.

  14. I have a leg right now that could use some hand-help to lift. And the knee on that side is, well, not good.
Hell, Debby. Getting older is just hard. And we've used our bodies for some work in our life, haven't we? I don't think anyone would judge you for taking that pain medication. Love the shower curtain. The tiling looks great.

    1. It was actually a muscle relaxer. When I do this (infrequently, but not infrequently enough, IMHO) it's like the muscle tighten up. It's awful. Heat helps. Bengay helps. But that muscle relaxer did the trick. The next morning I was much improved. But yeah...I do miss the days when I could move around and never even give a thought to knees or my back!

  18. Love the shower curtain, it really mimics a window. I've never had a hummer sit on me, I have had them buzz my head when they wanted me to leave the area. We had one on a nest who would run us off in the yard when she wanted to feed the babies.

  21. Your bathroom is looking gorgeous! The hummingbird photos are magical; I didn't know that they would alight on people. Very cool! For back issues-ice (to reduce inflammation) and then heat. I had a competitive gymnast so I learned (too) much about injuries.

    1. It was the strangest thing. It wasn't so much that the shelf was heavy...i think I just twisted wrong. Ka-zinnnnnnggggg! This was the first hummingbird I have seen this year too. I have a great humming bird feeder that I got last Christmas from my daughter. I want to hang it, but problem is the bears are awake too, and they like sweet things. We've live trapped our second raccoon in 3 days, and they will demolish a feeder too.

Your bathroom is fabulous! You two are amazing at home renovation. Your house is just beautiful! I am actually impressed the tax office is looking into the evaluation. In my county they pretty much sneer at you.

    1. This wasn't the tax office actually. The assessments are done by an outside agency. We were told to check the facts of the assessment. The house did not have a fireplace. It was not a duplex. Those two facts needed to be corrected, which will probably reduce the assessment. Not sure how much. Tax office? That's a completely different animal there. Side note. A friend was there. He owns multiple properties. He had a stack of assessments. One was for a property he had purchased for $67,000, and was now valued at 1.3 million. He was hopping mad too. A lot of people are. But the thing that I don't think people are understanding is just because the property values have increased by that does not mean our taxes are going to jump by the same percentage. People are freaking out about it. Tim wants to sell everything. I want him to hold on to his horses and see what happens. I think we'll be fine.

      Delete
  24. If they do try to increase property taxes by a ton, maybe there’s a way to find “comps” and then file an appeal. (In my county the taxes are based on assessed value, so I’d be in Tim’s shoes right about now!). Fingers crossed for you!

    1. The thing is, they have a lot more property 'value' in the bank, but they cannot continue taxing at the current millage. The budget doesn't support raking in that amount. I understand why people are shocked, but lets just wait and see...
