Pushing the Envelope

Staples out, which is a nice thing. I have been given permission to ditch the walker. Basically, it's pretty much 'do what you can, and stop when you can't'.

So...I'm pushing the envelope just a bit.

Yesterday, I walked a lot. My sister and I did groceries, some thrift shopping, a trip to Walmart to stock up on animal food, and a stop at a produce warehouse. Then I went to the new house and worked on the raised beds with Tim. I couldn't shovel, but I was able to rake and smooth the dirt, and I got some planting done. For the first time, I walked in the rough, walking down our driveway, and across the road, and took the cemetery path that leads to my sister's house. It was not difficult. I was careful about how I set my feet, but it was a nice walk and now that both legs are the same length, I didn't have a backache at the end of it all.

So...today marks two weeks out, and I can already tell that this is a going to be a very good thing.

We are working on strengthening the muscles that support my knee, and that is a whole new game. I move to outpatient PT next week.

It is cold today, in the fifties, very rainy. We did a little work at the new house after my appointment this morning. Tomorrow, I'm doing my first load of laundry in my bright red washing tower, so that is pretty exciting.

While we are talking about pushing the envelope.

This is plain and simple corruption and it horrifies me.

    1. It just seems as if that surgery loomed so large over everything for such a long time. To have it in the rear view mirror is a GREAT feeling!

  2. I am terrified that he is considering pardoning the gang that was trying to kidnap the governor of Michigan. We don't want them walking the streets.
I am so happy you are doing so well!!! What a relief to have the surgery over and done with and to have such success. I am glad the PT has gone well and it just has to be the most wonderful feeling to leave that pain behind!

    1. I can tell that this new direction in PT will cause some discomfort but as the muscles strengthen, it will hurt less and less.

  7. Hooray! Amazing progress. I've noticed with my shoulder PT, that I can be sore that evening or the next day. Go easy and follow their instructions! Linda in Kansas

    1. The strengthening on that knee did make the knee kind of 'ow-ie' that night, but nothing excruciating. No pain, no gain.

  8. You are doing amazingly well, very similar to Larry's quick recovery!
And then here's me, sitting up at 1 am because I hurt too much to sleep. At least it's not just my knee, lol---shoulders, neck, back and knees are all squalling about today's 4 hours in the gardens.

  10. It’s inspiring to hear about your steady progress and determination! Ditching the walker and walking those paths again sounds like a huge milestone, especially without pain or backache. Strengthening those muscles will definitely make a big difference as you move into outpatient PT. And that bright red washing tower sounds like a fun new chapter of independence! On a serious note, I appreciate you sharing your thoughts about the political situation—it’s important to stay aware and voice concerns about corruption. Wishing you continued healing and strength!

No one has any courage .Are you only receiving fake news, are people stupidly believing his bullshit. I think you have already lost your country. Gigi

    1. I just can't believe his big announcement yesterday, that Canada is considering becoming the 51st in exchange for being protected by the golden dome, something that is in the planning stages. He's nuts. I knew as soon as he said it that Canada was considering no such thing.

  17. Debby, you rock! Your recovery is truly amazing, and I am so glad for you. If you don't push the envelope, you don't progress. I do understand that there is a line, but you won't know it until you know it. And oooh, red laundry appliances are beautiful!

    1. I would never push to the point of stupidity. I push until I feel it, and then I back off. I know that the bones are still healing and that they are not exactly stable yet, but I am very happy to see that step count increasing. Yesterday we were working with resistance bands and doing some gentle stretching. That was a challenge.

  18. Yeah, these Trump pardons are unbelievable. Even a lot of right-wingers are upset about them, according to comments I've read on right-wing news sites. Of course, they don't see them as Trump's fault. They say he's been given "bad advice." Oh, brother.

I'm so glad you're improving and feeling more able to get around. Slowly but surely!

  19. Wow, you are doing so well with the knee! I'm having mine replaced in June, and am really worried about...being able to use the bathroom...my "good" knee isn't great. Your hospital stay sounds awful but about par with how hospital stays seem to go, sorry you went through that. It is extremely encouraging to read about your progress though, thank you for sharing! Any other tips or good advice?

    1. Oh Della! The funny thing was they really hammered home about a bedside commode. I said that I was not using it. They said I could remove the 'pot' and use it over my toilet, that I would need something to push myself up on. I said, "I have an antique wash stand right next to it that I could use. The man then turned to my husband and said, "Are you a fisherman? These are very popular. You can store your bait in the pot." True story. So. I have a brand new commode chair that I've never used once, never needed at all. But Tim can have it for fishing if he likes. But I only had one bad knee. Have an advocate with you at the hospital. Make sure of it.

  20. Debby- you'll be running marathons within the year! Okay, so maybe not but honestly, nothing you do could shock me too much. How wonderful that modern medicine can restore our lives to us in ways that our ancestors never could have imagined.
All Trump does is practice corruption. He is corrupt and everything about his administration and actions are corrupt. Where is the oversight?

  28. Debby,

The staples are gone, the walker’s retired,
    You’re walking with purpose, a soul re-inspired.
From groceries to gardens, you're finding your pace,
With rakes in your hands and fresh dirt to grace.

Down winding paths where wild things grow,
You move with care, but let courage show.
Two weeks in and you’re writing your song,
Of healing and hope, and muscles made strong.

And oh, that red washer—your laundry debut!
A bright little thrill in a world washed anew.
Each step is a triumph, each chore a delight,
In this journey of strength, you’re walking in light.

    John
