After hearing about these lake effect snows for the last week, we got our own taste of it today. Tim wanted to hunt for an hour. He said the main roads were bare. I figured if he was going to the new build, I'd go too, and spend some time with the cats.
I rethought that about 1/2 way there. It was snowing pretty heavily, and the roads were not bare. I said, "You know, I'm not sure this is a good idea..." but he said, in a very practical voice, "Well, we're half way there, so we might as well keep on going." I was not convinced of this.
In any case, we did get there. I had a bowl of turkey for the kittens, the fatty stuff, the junk meat that you don't put in your soup, I'd set it aside for them, and ladled out a couple scoops of rich hot broth to pour over their kibble.
We got to the driveway, and there was a mound of snow across it from the plows keeping the road open. Tim just drove the car straight through it. We started going sideways, but he simply backed up a little and straightened it out. It the first real test of the Suburu's 4WD, and it climbed right up the hill to the house with no problem.
There was easily a foot of snow there. Tim gave me a pair of his taller muckboots, and for once, I was glad that for whatever reason, that man has a stash of boots no matter where we are. I slipped off my short boots, and headed out to the garage with a hot meal for the cats. Tim headed off to the hemlocks with his gun, assuring me that unless he saw a buck, he was not going to shoot. It was snowing like crazy, and the wind was gusting. I would have hated for him to get something and then have to field dress and drag in home in heavy snow like that.
In any case, I opened the man door on the garage, calling for the cats. They all came tumbling down the ladder, one right after the other. They have a cozy nest down stairs with heat, but they really do seem to spend a lot of time upstairs.
So I fed them and we played for a while. As usual, Minnie watched. She did come when I called. I swept the garage out while waiting for Tim to return. After a while, I headed back to the house. The snow was really coming down heavily. I can't tell you the last time that I saw snow like that. On top of everything, it was getting dark. I hadn't heard a shot, but....
In the end, he came in looking like the abominable snowman. I said, "We need to go," and he did not disagree. We drove home in a virtual white out.
So...I will take pictures here, tomorrow, but it's been quite a day. The lake effect snow is supposed to last until 8 PM tomorrow.
Erie is in the midst of an actual blizzard right now, so by comparison, we're still getting off pretty lightly, and the winds are gusting off of Lake Erie and coating their snow with a hard crust of ice.
But...it could always be worse...California and Oregon had an 7.0 earthquake off shore, and had tsunami warnings.
Has anyone seen a handbasket? It just feels like there ought to be a handbasket. (That's a joke, by the way. Monday and Tuesday will be in the 50s. Hopefully that doesn't lead to flooding.)
My daughter called. Covid has hit her house hard once again. She's tested positive and sounds awful. William is sick too.
Here's my question of the day:
A plant based broth that tastes like chicken but contains no artificial flavors. I did not notice this when I grabbed it. So my question is this: why don't they call it vegetable broth?
And I keep thinking of things I meant to say. Tim went today to the hearing for the young man who pitched a rock through our window. He's a big hulking young man, freshly 18, an 11th grader. I found myself feeling sorry for him when I strolled around his facebook page. The part where his father hadn't called on his birthday hurt my heart. The young man has been in trouble since the night of the broken windows. He got caught with a vape pen at school and then got into a physical fight with the school officials. The judge asked him about that. He said something about 'losing it'. He was asked how long it had been since he used drugs. 'Two days,' he answered. The judge asked where his parents were. No one was there with him.
How freakin' sad is that?
Just for giggles, the narcissist's love song.
He's one of those guys that left her. He's in town for a couple days and wants to hook up, and he's already telling her that he is going to leave again. I hope she said no.
Glad you guys got home safely. It's strange that Time still wanted to go out hunting, even though he would have had to field dress it drag it home in a snowstorm. But what do I know? Men are strange creatures. A coworker's husband was in a car accident yesterday, wouldn't go to the hospital and then about six hours later started vomiting and kept vomiting.
ReplyDeleteMy husband won't see a doctor despite a six month history of worsening health. Sigh.
But I digress. There should definitely be a large hand basket for the US right now.
I wonder what happens if all the sensible people just say, 'Heck no...not getting in...' We can wave goodbye.
DeletePixie that vomiting sounds like concussion
DeleteGZ, yep, all the nurses were telling our receptionist the same thing but he still wouldn't see a doctor.
DeleteUgh. Is it wrong that I figured if you gave him another hard knock in the head, he'd be unconscious and you could drag him in?
DeleteI started the song so it is in my history to view later. Here, it was unusually warm for November and early December and it seems like it might be unusually cold and snowy for you at the moment.
ReplyDeletePlant based! What a twist of what is vegetarian. Do they think we don't know this?
What is interesting is that there are so many comments on a video of this song from young women sighing about how they want a perfect love, they despair of ever finding true love, etc. And I'm reading along incredulously because if they believe that this song is about true love, well...that's their problem right there. The singer keeps talking about himself and "feeling sorry for himself" and praising this girl for being perfect, over the top flattery, telling her he's sorry that their relationship ended, at the same time saying he's only in town a day or two and then he'll be off once again...it's manipulation not true love. When you listen to that song, you tell me what YOU think.
DeleteBroth made for people who don't want to eat meat but still want the taste...I hate to think what they use to get that!
ReplyDeleteJust have honest vegetable broth.
That is so sad about that young man. At least he still IS in school despite everything, but it doesn't look as if he has good influence and backing in his life.
Glad you got home safely.
He doesn't have a good support system, and that is so very sad. He's just dumbing around getting in trouble. Tim said he thinks the boy walked from school to the court house.
DeleteIt is a weird term plant based but then they are concocting all sort of 'vegetarian' meals to taste like meat. The plant based bacon is revolting. Weather patterns are all over the place, our flood sirens went off yesterday after heavy rain.
ReplyDeleteThat 'disguising' is so strange to me. I don't mind meatless meals at all, but I can't imagine what the draw is to making them taste like they've got meat in them. I hope that your village did not get a lot of flooding. I'm a bit worried about what Monday and Tuesday will bring once all this snow starts melting quickly.
DeleteI was wondering which plant tastes like chicken.
ReplyDeleteWe have another storm heading our way tonight. No snow though.
It seems like every thing is unsettled right now. At least the eastern part of the country is getting rain. For a while there, I thought New Jersey was going to burn down.
DeleteI can't understand if you are vegetarian or vegan, why would you purchase things which taste or looked like meat. The young man in court without any family support, sounds a really hard life for him.
ReplyDeleteI know. I keep thinking about him.
DeleteI'm glad you made it there and back safely. I'm sure the cats were pleased to see you.
ReplyDeleteSo many parents don't know how to parent or can't be bothered to. It's very sad for their children.
It never even occurred to me until your comment. How strange it is that some cats are better tended than children. It IS sad.
DeleteThat kind of snow and so much of it is rare here but we have had what I call a blizzard a few times in my lifetime. I used to love it when my kids were young and we'd have a "snow day".
ReplyDeleteHmmm, no answer for the non-chicken chicken broth.
Some kids seem to have no chance for a decent life. It's very sad.
It makes me wonder how parents can have so little regard for the wellbeing of their children.
DeleteOur ‘storm’ is over, and it wasn’t too bad although the school buses were cancelled for one day.
ReplyDeleteSo what does that mean when the school buses are canceled? School was still open? That's interesting to me. Here, if the buses can't run, schools are closed.
DeleteI'm a retired teacher and so many times it was obvious by the 8th grade some students would be better served in a vocational/ technical school program. These programs will teach them real skills where they can graduate with a trade. It would be even better if they had mentors such as Tim to lead by example and teach them "soft" skills. Such as showing up on time, dressed appropriate for the job, and most of all taking pride in what they do.
ReplyDeleteYou know, its funny. But we did talk about giving him an opportunity to pay off the broken window by working with Tim and I. Not sure how that would go down, since he's not allowed on our property as part of the outcome of this hearing.
DeleteI wonder if someone else would and could give him a chance
DeleteIt is one of those things we'd have to talk to the judge about, I imagine.
DeleteI too question why there is this push to label/form/imitate vegetarian fare after meat. I've had many good vegetarian sandwiches that look nothing like a hamburger patty yet when I seem them in the store, they all look like a hamburger patty and tout how similar they taste to one. I would be perfectly happy if they looked nothing like one and just focused on tasting good, not exactly like hamburger.
ReplyDeleteMore too your question, I think the difference is probably yeast. They typically add yeast to meat type broths to make them more savory and I'm guessing broth touted as vegetable broth lacks the yeast.
The key words are right there: 'focus on tasting good' as opposed to trying to make it taste like something else.
Delete"Plant-based" is the new catch-phrase, I think. I got some bread the other day that is supposedly high in "plant-based protein." Can we not just assume that there is no animal based protein in our bread? Ugh.
ReplyDeleteEvidently not... *Looks at toast suspciciously*
ReplyDeletePerhaps I'm missing something, but how can that plant-based broth be "Chick'n" flavored without using some sort of artificial flavor? (shakes head) The fact that that kid was in court without a single family member to support him says it all, doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteSure does. The boy has some shit parents, that's for sure. Period. They checked out some time ago.
DeleteI feel bad for that kid. His frontal cortex is not fully formed, and won't be for years. He's in for many bad decisions because his parents aren't caring for him and teaching him right from wrong. It's tough, he needs to be rescued, but the penal system is not designed for that.
ReplyDeleteYou are right. I have a call in re: the issue. I am not sure the court house is open today.
DeleteI gotta wonder where those parents are.
ReplyDeleteI am glad I no longer live in an extremely snowy place. (And by that I mean New York City, which can't hold a candle to your kind of snow!)
I think that NYC would pose its own problems with snow removal just based on the amount of traffic and parked cars. That's one thing that we don't deal with here.
DeleteI can't get that kid out of my mind. I wonder if he is in a detention facility? I know here at our juvenile court a parent is required to attend with a child, even for a traffic infraction, and if they are a no show, a warrant is issued.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly explains why the kid acts like he does. Unfortunately it seems like so many kids don't have parents that act like parents anymore.
He is not in a detention facility. He came from school. If it is a requirement, it makes me wonder if there is going to be some sort of blowback for the kid's parents.
DeleteThat kind of snow is beyond my comprehension. It was in the low 20s when I set out on my walk this morning, so I activated a pair of "hand warmers" I bought recently. Even now, seven hours later, they're still going strong! But yes... by Monday we're supposed to be back in the 70s.
ReplyDeleteWell, it is going to be interesting to see what happens on Monday and Tuesday, that's for sure.
DeleteA lot of flavourings are plant based - its just that it is cool now to advertise it thus. Chicken salt has no chicken involved - it evolved because it tasted good on chicken, but is actually just salt with added herbs. Our best selling beef stock cubes are vegan friendly. Whatever floats their boats, I figure. Apparently some folk want to eat meat-free but still taste meat flavours. And apparently some folk want to get all bent out of shape - from both the vegan and the alter side - and I figure it must be a symptom of either not enough problems to worry about, or too many and so its easier to go for this one. (Plant friendly) teflon coat on here (and I eat meat but cook for everyone)
ReplyDeleteI'm not outraged or anything. I just find it funny that a plant based broth wouldn't be simply ID'ed as vegetable broth.
