Reasons to Celebrate

Today's shame was an American president accepting another leader's Nobel Peace prize, beaming with pride as if it actually did honor his work.🀑 (In case you didn't know, it doesn't.) He is like a child with a sparkly bauble.

This story made me laugh.

My kids loved this book and -ahem!- I do a very good Grover imitation. Just a thing you may not know about Debby.

I just thought you needed to know that book to understand this book, The Monster at the End of the End of the File. By Jeff Whitcher

A woman on Facebook reads it. I wish I could share. The reader's FB name is lyndseydotw

Also:

If you have Instagram and do not mind swearing, you can always begin following My Cluck Hut. Just a tip: they are a soap company and their motto is: "if you are not a fascist and you wash your ass, our soap is for you." Their videos are hilarious.

We have had people outside the country believing that things seem worse. In my opinion, they sure are. But the more outrageous this gets, the more it galvanizes people to stand up and speak out.  That's exactly what is happening: more and more people are coming off the sideline. However, it is ugly. It is likely to get uglier.

All that to say, Tim and I believe that when your government starts quoting Nazis, we all better get off our behinds. We have committed to weekly demonstrations. It is encouraging to spend time with like minds. It is encouraging to get more people cheering us on from their cars. We have seen examples of increasingly hostile behavior, but they are the teensiest minority. We stand fast.

If you are feeling hopeless, find something to laugh at. Heaven knows we have the best comics on 'our' side. Share that humor. Be an encourager. Don't give up.

Things to be celebrated here: I have been having the worst trouble with bread, mostly because I have been trying new recipes. Yesterday, I went back to tried and true πŸ₯³ Excellent results and Tim got cinnamon rolls.

Remember the successful toy giveaway before Christmas? There is a huge push to do it next year. A local storage company stepped up and offered a free storage unit for two months. They have offered to be a drop off site, so that people can drop of the toys for the entire six weeks before the event. We had such a great response but drop off was one day, and the giveaway was the following day. Extending the collection from one day to six weeks is going to be huge. I have a couple of other ideas percolating as well. Huge satisfaction out of that.

Princess dresses for the little princesses. That always makes me happy.

We did not get the lake effect snow we were were warned about. That was good news.

I can't be with her but my youngest will be turning 36.  I will celebrate her anyway.

What are you celebrating today?

  1. Basically I'm celebrating Friday, seeing as how that means clean sheets and martinis. It doesn't take a whole lot to thrill me.
And by the way- I do a pretty good Grover imitation too, honed by hundreds of readings of that very book.

  2. That's great news about the toy giveaway. Six weeks is a lot more breathing room and less pressure. You really started something!

  3. That's so nice to read about the toy giveaway and it's success. The political stuff sucks of course, but I bet your Amish friends aren't too bothered by it. How do I go about joining the Amish anyway...

    1. We were surprised to walk out a store here and find ourselves in the middle of a whiteout yesterday. By the time we got home - nothing. I see that we have another storm coming Monday through Wednesday. I assume it will affect you folks too.

  5. Those books are great! I've been too sick to join protests but I do look forward to the day when I am well enough to be out there again. Thanks for all you do, Debbie, the protests, the toy collection - you are really fabulous!

  6. So much to comment on here! First- I love Gover and I’m pretty good at imitating him too! I didn’t grow up in this country, but I made sure my kids watched it every day (along with me!😁) One of my most amazing experiences was seeing all the real people of Sesame Street in the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade , that’s how much I love it!πŸ˜…Re. attending protests-I’m starting to feel a little worried about it, since I’m not a citizen, but I think I still will-hopefully I’ll only get shipped back to Norway, without a stop at Guantanamo Bay..?! What great news about the toy drive! You started something so beautiful! ❤️ And I love those princess dresses!! Xo, Rigmor πŸ₯°

    1. Lol It seems that there are a lot of us. I loved the Muppet Show. How the world has changed!

It will be very interesting to me to see what happens with this FIFA stuff. People are canceling, fearful of coming to America. Korea is opening factories in Canada and Carney and China have announced trade deals, Carney stating that China is a more reliable trade partner than the US. The world is adapting to a new world order. We will pay bigly for our foolish shortsightedness.

  7. A literary introduction to The Monster. Not bad.
I guess there'll have to be a staffed weekly drop off day for the toy donations. How great that the effort was so successful.

    1. How about daily staffed drop off?!! Since they have on site staffing, they have offered to accept donations and secure them.

  8. Amazing how your idea has taken off, so many folks willing to help. I'm not sure I can celebrate right now. I just read that my MAGAt rep, a felon bootlicker, has offered for ICE to put a facility in my county. I am horrified daily and feeling helpless.

  12. My grandkids love that book! I bought it for the oldest granddaughter who is now 16, and it is a favorite of the 3 younger ones, ages 2, 4, and 6. I’ve been going to protests, have sent postcards, and will continue to speak out. At a No Kings rally, I saw a sign that read … “Democracy dies in Silence”. Cannot allow Democracy to die without a fight! Great news about the toy giveaway! There are more good people in the world than bad. You are an incredibly strong person doing the right things Debby. We need more people like you these days. Cali

  15. We live in a small town almost exactly in the middle of a triangle of large cities. In the good ole days, first when we had a tv antenna and then the first years we had cable, we were able to get all three PBS stations. And the top of the triangle had the Canadian versions with English and French! The other two stations had the States version with English and Spanish. We learned to count in three languages. I missed that with my grandchildren. I really want to hear your Grover impression.
I am so in awe of what you are accomplishing with the toy collection. You know, my friends and I often said we wished there was somewhere that accepted used toys for giveaways - especially indoor toys that were rarely and barely used. You put together a fabulous thing! Parents and children who would love to be able to afford everything requested to Santa and people who would just like to rehome items to make room for more. It was phenomenal! And now with more on board and an early start and a storage unit - Girl, the sky is the limit!! How many children's faces will be smiling just because of you and your idea. You Go Girl!
I admire your commitment to the cause. I try to do what I can but I will tell you honestly I am getting burned out. I think because I just want to spend so much time crying - I feel like we are hitting our heads on brick walls. All the stops in the system seem to have disappeared.
I am going to our peaceful protest tomorrow. Spotify discovered the error of their ways (boycotted) and has cancelled all hiring advertisements for proud boys and nazis so I started my subscription again and my amplifier on wheels is ready to go! I just finished my sign which makes me cry too. And I have laid out all my layers for tomorrow's temperatures.
In other news, one of the former heads of ICE is now running against the representative from a neighboring county. . .
Thanks for the recommendations - the Cluck Hut is a riot!

  16. I'm pleased a judge has ordered that ICE no longer spray or drag at people. I noticed the Idiot's giant smile when holding his Nobel "gift." I'm sure he was anxious to rip it out of the back and put it on. When he was given the fake FIFA medal, he stepped right over to the box, picked it up and put it on himself instead of waiting for any ceremony. I think chains will look good too. Lovely that your town wants to do the collecting and distribution again. Storage might result in bigger / appliance items being donated. Linda in Kansas

    1. This is toys. This is for kids. This is an ingathering with kids and one special day in mind. I don't know how anyone looks at these 'awards' and sees anything but a vain simpleton. There is an idea floating around the interwebs that people should gather up all their children's sports trophies and send them to the white house.

Good news (though more organization) for the toy give away. Hope you can get lots more people on board to help out.

  19. Here in Southern Maine, a great deal of apprehension about ICE surge due to appear here in the next week or so. We have a Somali community here in Lewiston and many are reported to be leaving town in preparation. Most new Mainers are in either Lewiston or Portland. Rumors are flying, and people on the left are arguing amongst themselves as to how to respond. We have established immigrants rights and Indivisible organizers who have their act together so hoping their guidance prevails. We've a much smaller population than Minneapolis so the reported 200 agents coming may have a proportionate effect to the 2,000+ in MN. As a 71-yr-old with balance issues, my protesting is limited, but I worry about my slightly younger brother who has been attending peaceful protests since last spring getting caught up in bad situations.

    1. The timing of this is no accident. Trump was enraged over Susan Collin's vote on limiting war powers in Venezuela. His profane phone call didn't work. He will punish her and her state. I am hearing that there are enough bipartisan votes in both the house and the senate to rule out action in Greenland. There will be a lot more states to be punished.

  20. What a pathetic fool that man is. Standing there grinning and drooling over an award that was given to another person. He doesn't even realize what a fool he made of himself, best meme generator ever. I have to say, the more I see of Ms Machado the more I question the decision of the Committee to award her the prize in the 1st place. She has forever disgraced herself with her actions, but hey, she got a goodie bag full of MAGA swag, no doubt a red hat and if she was truly lucky a trump meme coin........
