What's Shaking?

It has been an aggravating bunch of days. The new washer we installed was 'walking'. Vibrating itself right out of its place. We have never had a washer do that before. We thought we had the problem fixed by putting a rubber vibration absorbing mat underneath it. We were in a hurry, things to do, places to be, holiday weekend, etc, and then we received a phone call the next morning that the door wouldn't open. A mechanical issue on top of everything else?!!!! It was a brand new $1800 washer!

So...although we were headed out of town, we turned around and went back to her house to assess the situation.

The part that wasn't relayed in the telling of the story is that the door wouldn't open because the damned thing had 'walked' once again, and pinned the front of itself against a door molding.

We simply didn't have time to trouble shoot it and spend a day working on it, so I said, "We're going to have to do this after the holiday. Can you do without a washer over the weekend, while we figure out what we're going to do next?"

She said that she could.

That thing has been hanging over our heads all weekend. We've installed many washers in many places, and we've never had this.

Today is Tim's birthday. He wanted to go have lunch at his favorite little restaurant in Pleasantville. They are only open until 2, but we had that darned washer to figure out and a carload of tools, since he wasn't sure what we would actually need to solve this problem, if we could even solve it at all.

My guess was that it was not level. It's a front loader which we have not got a lot of experience with. Maybe they are fussier than top loaders. Tim was reading up on it while I was getting ready to go this morning. He said, "They say that there are four packing bolts that have to be removed. If they are not removed, it will cause a serious vibration."

Now...surely it could not be that easy...

But...I am happy to say that it was. He sat down with the owners manual, read where they would be found, climbed back there to have a look, and lo...there they were. He removed them, Deb tossed her weekend of laundry in and we started up the machine. This time, we waited. We sat right there and watched it through the whole cycle until it began to spin.

Smooth as silk.

If we said it once today, we've said it a dozen times..."Oh, I'm so glad that washer is figured out..." and we are. Best birthday present ever! It was sorted out so quickly that we met up with my sister and brother in law and had lunch out. We ran to the Mennonite Grocery and picked up a few things, and then came home.

It's been a quiet night. Tomorrow, we'll hit the road running once again. We're putting the bathroom together, which is exciting. The Township employee is coming to put the electronics back in the grinder pump for the sewage system (each property has its own grinder and pump which pushes everything into the main line). Since our property sat vacant for some years, the electronics were removed and will be replaced Wednesday morning. We will be able to hook our drains into the system. Yay!

Tim has this crazy idea that we can get the bathroom done before my knee replacement, and I can recuperate there. I don't know if all that can happen before the 14th of May, but we'll see. We've got all the stuff to get it done.

It would be nice.

You know what else is nice? We've got a ten day forecast and no snow predicted!

Our Easter was nice too. I hope yours was as well.

    1. This was a brand new washer. It needs not to fall apart for a long time.

    1. He read about it online first. I'm so glad he found that. It would not have occurred to us. My washer at the new house is a front loader. We will have to look out for packing bolts.

  3. If anyone can get it done by May 14th, I think it would be you guys.

    Happy Birthday to Tim:)

    1. I've a notion we're going to find out. I'm leaving Thursday morning to spend some time with my son's family. I'll be back Sunday, so I'm not going to be much help to him this week. Although, I won't be in his way either, so it might just work out.

  4. Just please don't get worn out rushing to complete the house. You need a reserve of energy for your surgery and recuperation. See how annoying I can be now that I'm further along in the replacement process???

    1. You know, though, Boud, you really got me thinking ahead as far as food preparation goes. Helping heft that washer in and out really wreaked havoc on my knee. It's worse than it ever was. Last night, I was not able to sleep for the pain.

  5. You just caused me to look at the 14-day forecast. No snow for us either. Just about there unless a May surprise awaits.

  7. That's a catchy title given the subject matter, but my gosh $1800 for a washer?! Is it gold plated? Anyway, glad for no snow as I know where you live, and Happy Birthday Tim 🙂

    1. This is a small house, and maximizing space is important. This is an 'all in one'. It is a washer and a dryer. You throw your laundry in, it washes and when it is done, it dries them.

    2. I've seen those in various videos, usually in European or Asian households. That's so nice that you supply such a thing for your tenant!

  8. Front loading washing machines are the norm here, so we would know to remove transporting 'bolts'. I'm glad Tim got his birthday meal.

  10. It would be a little easier for you to be on one floor after your knee replacement but you will be fine even with stairs. I managed to clog up my kitchen sink on the weekend and tried everything but it is still clogged.. A plumber is coming on Wednesday to fix whatever the problem is. [potato peels in the garbarator] I think. Never had this happen before. My washer used to walk until a handyman levelled it. I hope you have a great time and a rest visiting your son this week. Please, no more snow, mine is gone but my daughter still has loads of it on the ground. Her next aggravation will be black fly season lol. Gigi

  11. Such an easy thing to miss! I wondered if the block they put in the base for stabilising weight had come loose..that is spectacular when that happens..but not usually with something new!!

Good for Tim having an aim to get things done in time for you..let's hope that he'll be successful.

And a good forecast too..things are definitely looking up!! X

  13. Wow, simple as a few bolts! Hallelujah! Thank God this info is online, and there are YouTube videos for just about everything. Oh, I hope you can get the house comfy enough and soon enough for you to recover in. Glad you could celebrate Tim's birthday with a win. It's all coming together. Wish we lived closer, I'd organize a meal train for you while you recuperate from surgery!

  14. My husband uses YouTube videos for everything. He, like Tim, has years of experience and knowledge about mechanics and carpentry and plumbing...
But sometimes you come across a problem that is not something you've done before. And that's when YouTube can save the day.
Happy birthday to that man of yours. And now please don't wreck your other knee, trying to get your house ready for your recovery! But oh, wouldn't that be a nice place to be.

Are you doing your pre-surgery PT? I've heard from several friends that it makes a HUGE difference in recover. Take care of yourself for a bit so you are ready for surgery and you will heal quicker...

  16. In another life, I used to design front load washing machines for a living. Perhaps that is why I have only owned the most basic top load machines I can buy. I'm still on my second set after 30 years, the first set lasting a bit of 20 years.

A walking washer--goodness! I felt the relief as I read that removing the bolts fixed it!
We have no snow and only one day predicted for rain in the two-week forecast...and temps in the mid-50s to low 70s! Crazy!
I hope you can be at the new place before your surgery. :)

  23. Happy belated to Tim. You would think there would be labels on the washing machine telling the owner to remove the feet. When we were in Prague, we had an all in one in the Air BnB. It washed ok, but we were pretty happy about the drying rack. It never dried, I have no idea if it was just a crappy model or what.
