We headed up to Levi's to buy some lumber to finish Tim's shed for "that which is of vital importance and cannot be gotten rid of. And furthermore, it can't be stored in the garage because...just because".
We started out of town and the new washer we installed yesterday had a door that would not open. So. We turned around and went back.
We got that sorted.
We turned around and headed back into town, but there was a big sale going on at one of the historic houses going out of town, and Tim saw a cabinet that might work in the basement for small things"That are of vital importance and cannot be gotten rid of. And furthermore, it can't be stored in the garage because...just because."
It turned out that the cabinet would not work because it did not have shelves.
Luckily, it was not a wasted trip...he found a turkey hunting vest that came with a free hat. He also found a ceramic coated cast iron skillet that I did not want but he did.
I wandered off, looking and did not see anything that I really wanted. There was a lot of art, and there was a painting of the Battle of Bunker Hill/the Death of General Warren, which, of course, is the man our town is named for. I played his grieving mother at a historical presentation once.
But while the house we live in now is grand enough to pull off a print like this in an ornate frame, it would probably look kind of silly in our rustic little cabin. Plus it was $75. Those two things.
There was a lot of gorgeous furniture, but I went right on by. Because I know I've got gorgeous furniture to get rid of.
And while I was being so sensible, I walked past table after table of interesting things, and I noticed this tote which contained a 12 place setting of these. And I told myself quite firmly that I needed dishes like I needed a swift kick in the pants. But I couldn't help noticing that they matched the kitchen. They were marked $5 for all, which I was sure could not possibly be correct.
While I was staring at them, having a very sensible conversation with myself, Tim walked up with his turkey vest and the ceramic coated cast iron skillet which I had specifically said that I did not want, since I have a nice cast iron skillet (albeit without the ceramic, which was orange, which did not match with the kitchen anyways). He said, "I think this skillet is from Belgium."
He said, "What? Did you want those dishes?"
I said, "They are pretty. They do match with the kitchen, but no, we don't need them. I'm sure that $5 means does not mean the whole box," but just that quick, Tim said, "Let me ask."
The man who was not in charge scurried off to ask the woman who was in charge, and came back to say, "Yes. My wife says that is the price for all of it," and so it was done.
Those dishes look beautiful with the paint; I think you would have regretted passing them up.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Margaret. You are right.
DeleteVery pretty plates and a steal at $5. Thanks for the links. I had briefly read about both those senators but not the full stories.
ReplyDeleteI actually was very happy with those dishes.
DeleteSo many good things in this post, Debby!🤩 Enjoy your new things! Xo, Rigmor
ReplyDeleteI am happy, Rigmor!
DeleteIt sounds like a very good day all told. You do find some bargains! The dishes are gorgeous. Probably not microwave safe or dishwasher safe, given the platinum trim, but who cares? At that price, and that quality, they are worth handwashing any day!
ReplyDeleteI have Fire King dishes for the microwave, and I am going to make a shameful admission...these dishes will probably see the inside of the dishwasher.
DeleteBeautiful dishes and good news too! I felt a lump in my throat as I remembered our dear Weaver. You have inspired me to look for a columbine plant. I wonder if it will grow in Georgia.
ReplyDeleteLooks like they sure do!
DeleteOMGosh! For $5.00--how could you pass up such pretty dishes that would go so perfectly in your new kitchen. You both got things you really liked and wanted...and you got a few more plants, too. What an excellent shopping day. :)
ReplyDeleteYou know Rita, life just seems so much more balanced. I can breathe. $5 set of dishes. A couple hours digging in the dirt, helping Tim with his shed. Tonight I am reading a good book. I don't miss the stress and the go, go, go...
DeleteSounds like a most excellent day all around. *smiles*
DeleteBeautiful plates! It would have been bad not to buy them, especially at that price. I think it's interesting that Tim wanted that skillet, since he does not appear to cook. I have Le Creuset and Lodge like that, I like them a lot, but they are so dang heavy.
ReplyDeleteHe does NOT cook. It was the only thing he asked when we got married. After 8 years of cooking for himself, he did not ever want to cook again. I like my cast iron skillet and use it nearly every day. I surely don't need two.
DeleteYou do have some very healthy conversations with yourself about buying things!
ReplyDeleteI do speak very sensibly to myself, but honestly Red, sometimes I don't listen to me.
DeleteFamily story is told that my grandmother threw a pan at my grandfather once. Might have been an orange cast iron skillet. Hmmm. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteLol! I love know the history of my things.
DeleteIt's way past time for the Democrats in Congress to get more vocal, time for them to fight for us. I love the dishes, what a buy!
ReplyDeleteWe elected these people to take our voices to Washington. That is their job. $5 for 36 pieces comes out to less than 14¢ which means I've got a beautiful set of dishes I can use every day.
DeleteThose dishes are just wonderful. And I can't believe the price!!! And new silverware? You will be setting a lovely table!
ReplyDeleteI did not know you could plant those bulbs before fall. I will be looking into this! I did not have a single tulip come up this year, I think I need to replenish.
According to what I read, the bulbs can be planted in the spring. They may 'grow', but they will not bloom until they've wintered. So...next spring, I should see results. (hopefully...)
DeleteWhat lovely plates (and a steal at that price). I am sure you may need to use the skillet one day . . . I bought a little green CI number for £5 in the charity shop last week. OK, not stamped Le Creuset but that is a VERY expensive name and the one I got will work just as well.
ReplyDeleteI too love Aquilegias and have introduced them to the garden here (seeds and plants I bought, plus stowaways) and have them growing in the gravel which they love. Then when I took the membrane off the bank, dozens of BIG deep blue and purple clematis appeared - they have huge flowers. Obviously planted here by a former owner.
The clematis was a bit of serendipity, wasn't it? My sister has purple columbine. I have yellow. We'll trade seeds down the road.
DeleteP.S. It tickled me when you said he must have thought you were Heathens at the Sawmill!!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure he did. Tim owed him for some boards. He wouldn't take the money. He insisted that this must be done another day.
DeleteI would never leave a bargain find like the plates Debby. You can always sell them again or give them someone for a present.
ReplyDeleteThe thing about beautiful dishes at a price like that, is that they can be used for everyday. It would have been a silly thing to buy fancy dishes to put away. I've never quite understood that.
DeleteA good, successful day which made you happy .
ReplyDeleteIt is a huge relief to be able to do things that please my own heart, or make progress on our own projects. I cannot quite get over the sense of relief...
DeleteA good day all round!!
ReplyDeleteInteresting about Good Friday..it isn't a holiday in France..but Monday and Tuesday definitely are . (Apart from Alsace that was ruled by Germany at the time of a rule change) So more celebratory?
In our culture, Monday is not a holiday. When I worked, we got no time off for Easter, since it fell on Sunday.
DeleteThinking about it, Easter holiday is supposed to be about resurrection and not death on the cross, so Good Friday should not be a holiday but the rest yes. It is all excitement this move, I think it is called 'nesting' with buying stuff, but remember you are downsizing into old age ;)
ReplyDeleteAmish hold this holiday very reverently. Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Holy Monday.
DeleteI'm glad to see that the tide is beginning to turn against the mad orange felon and his unhealthy crew. I just hope the rebellion is successful and bloodless.
ReplyDeleteThose plates are so pretty and will make you smile every time you use them.
We've just bought a load of seeds, aquilegias among them, for my birthday. 'A garden full of flowers' as Barry put it.
I have seeds, bulbs and now plants, and I'm enjoying working and daydreaming about what everything will look like next spring.
DeleteGood Friday and Easter Sunday are holidays here. We had the first day of early voting yesterday and it was incredibly busy. Mark Carny is running against a candidate who has in past models himself after trump but has backed off a bit now. I guess we will see how it turns out on April 28. It is a very Important election for Prime Minister. We don’t vote directly for one or the other but for the person in our riding of the political party we want. Each riding winner gets a seat in parliament and the party with most seats has its leader as Prime Minister. Much more straightforward than the American way. Those dishes look really nice in your new kitchen, enjoy. That frying pan might come in handy next time you and Tim have a little disagreement, I’m kidding. Happy Easter. Gigi
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter back to you. That is interesting about your election procedures. I think that Mark Carny is very skillful. I hope your country has more sense than my own. Our electoral college needs to be abolished. One person, one vote.
DeleteI bought myself some blooming tulips for my birthday and was wondering if they could be planted now that the flowers are finished. Gigi
ReplyDeleteOooh. I know, I know. The answer is yes they can!
DeleteHappily, Chris Van Hollen is one of my senators. The other is Angela Alsobrooks. Both are very responsive to emails from constituents (ask me how I know--I write them even though I know they are supportive of issues I care about) and they also send regular updates on actions they are taking to push back on the orange idiot. My representative is Steny Hoyer who is also responsive. I am fortunate to have representatives who are a far cry from most in congress.
ReplyDeleteI received a response to my e-mail from John Fetterman stressing that he still feels as strongly as he ever did about the important issues. He just feels that he has to work within the framework of the current administration. I think that is wrong. If ever was a time to stand up, this is it. Priding yourself on being a centrist is not helpful. All you're doing is choosing not to get involved.
DeleteAgree completely. Fetterman is a huge disappointment, going along to get along instead of standing up for what is right.
Deletec
You know, I went to hear him campaign in Ridgeway, and I was so impressed by him. Just a plain, plainspoken man, which was just what we needed. I voted for him. I cannot see myself voting for him again.
DeleteMy mother collected a set of dishes bit by bit over the years. She spent a lot on money, relatively speaking anyway. I once priced what a set like this would cost. IIRC it was $17. Times have changed and good china is not valued anymore. They sit in our cabinet never used, except that Sue has some cups ans saucers on display right now because they fit the season.
ReplyDeleteThe thing about 'good china' is that when you pay $5 for a 12 place setting, an entire box of beautiful dishes, it is not 'good china'. It will be used for everyday, and treated like everyday.
DeleteHere's the thing about giving ourself a present- we get exactly what we want. You got those dishes that called to you and they cost what a fancy coffee would cost. Less! Yes.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you had such a fine day. I'm glad that lawmakers are stepping up to call out the fact that the emperor is buck naked.
Also- yes. We have a shed because some things cannot go in the garage.
We have many garages full of things, and three basements. Tim has too much stuff. He's got some thinking to do, but I'm going to stand back and let him figure that out all by himself.
DeleteI love those dishes ... perfect for your kitchen!
ReplyDeleteThey are.
DeleteThe dishes are a great find! I understand about tensions arising from necessary/unnecessary purchases. My tensions are mostly in the realm of groceries, but still. :)
ReplyDeleteI couldn't quite believe it myself, but the thing is, I probably would have walked on by even knowing the price, because they were not an actual need. I have Christmas dishes. I have a 4 place set of syracuse china, AND of Fireking peach lustre. I absolutely. did. not. need these. But when the guy came back, Tim said, "Okay!" and that was that.
DeleteBut, secretly, I am tickled with them, in a very impractical way.
We have a four day weekend here and in our state all four are public holidays but I believe that good friday is the most serious of the holidays and very few things are open! Glad that you got the plates.
ReplyDeletePretty much all the stores and restaurants are open on Good Friday here. Unless you're dealing with the Amish, or a small operation.
DeleteYou and Tim have worked and saved for so long, it is good to treat yourselves as you deserve it. If not now, when for goodness sakes. A friend of mine from our high school brunch bunch died unexpectedly this week and it reminds one that we are here one day and gone the next. Celebrate life!
ReplyDelete(and Happy Easter)!
Good advice, Ellen. Thank you. Happy Easter to youtoo.
DeleteWanted to share a true story I learned at a large Easter gathering yesterday about a Mia of 60 years ago…. Determined mom of young kids, facing significant adversity, was given a chance on a house… All these years later, the kids have grown up to be fine citizens of the world and the house has sheltered and nurtured not only generations of this family, but also untold numbers of others in the community, all because of the values of the mom and the faith of others in her. Thank you, Debby and Tim, for providing the start of a similar new wave of hope !
ReplyDeleteI think everyone hopes to leave their mark on the future. Thank you for a story that allows me to believe, for a moment, that maybe we have done this.
