Short one

I have a cold, so that has sidelined me. Hard to work when you can't breathe through your nose.

Still we have been puttering around here. Tim is cleaning a shed out down at the old house. I worked on plants inside. I have about 4 dozen plants started on a table at a southern window. Such a hopeful thing...especially since it snowed yesterday.

We had ten ton of gravel brought in yesterday. Spring = mud. This should help a lot.

Hung a bat box today.

I am going to take a break from world events. It is just too much tonight.

I have been worried about a lot of bloggers this year. Tasker, at Yorkshire Memoirs. Northsider Dave. Tom. Joanne over at A Cup on the Bus.
Now I have to add Catalyst from Oddball Observations to that list.

  1. I'm envious of your starter plants. (Do you have a spare covid test at home? Some kits have flu A and flu B and RSV included in one testing tubie.) Since we're over 50, it's a good thing to check. Linda in Kansas

    1. This winter has been a long one and I have been enjoying them more than usual this year!

  2. I follow Dave, he has been in my thoughts, he's not posted for 3 months, all we can do is hope they are well.

  3. Yes it is sad when people disappear from the blogs and you think the worst. And maybe it is so and we just have to accept it.

    1. I do accept it, as far as that goes. I leave comments from time to time to tell them they are in my thoughts. I often find myself wondering if Tasker meant for the Ascent of Man to be his final post. He was such a wonderful voice to a time most of us did not know. He was so like Weaver in that regard. O miss him.

  4. I was just wondering the other day about Joanne. Catalyst has been doing okay considering, I think. And Tasker has a lot of trouble posting, so I always hope he's still with us.
Small good news in politics though: two dem victories in Florida, one a leg seat literally that man's district, yay!

    1. The tide is turning. I believe it with all my heart. Catalyst said that he had a small stroke 2 or 3 weeks ago. I have never known him not to blog for quite nearly 2 weeks.

  5. That's right! Joanne hasn't checked in for awhile. I hope that some family member posts something on my behalf when it becomes necessary.

  6. I'm stuck at home today, while it snows, with a sick six year old. Oh well.
    Hope you're feeling better soon.
We are a community, some people don't understand that.

  7. Debby, I and another blogger heard from Joanne via emails.
After the fall and the broken hip, she was in rehab. A rehab facility bus was taking her to a doc appointment. She in a wheelchair. Driver on exit ramp made a wide turn. Chair broke loose with Joanne in it. Damaged her ear on hearing aid, broke shoulder and collar bone. So she had to go back to rehab. She had been ready for discharge, but then had to go back for another four weeks. She was finally home in early March. She was finding progress very slow.
Hopefully she will feel up to posting pretty soon!
She has many friends in blogworld who care.

    1. Oh I am glad that someone knows what happened. I had been tod that she had a setback, nothing more. I did not want to say anything publicly without express permission. Thank you for this. So many people worried about 'our' feisty woman!

    2. Oh, dear Joanne. This is horrible. I hope she is recovering. She is sorely missed.

  8. Sorry a cold has boarded you, hate those things. Really tough turn of events for JoAnne, we have been worried about her as well. The comments about community are so true, it is a big part of our lives, a place of relief from the shitshow swirling around us daily.

  10. Prompted by you, I just checked on Catalyst's blog and there is some sad news there. I'm glad to see in the comments above that Joanne is hopefully on the mend from her mishaps. I too have been wondering about Tasker. We ARE a community.

  11. Hope you feel better soon. Glad to hear that Joanne is on the mend - what a rough year for her. Sorry to read about Bruce (Catalyst). I sure will miss his Friday Funnies and wonderful posts.

  12. I've learned to limit my "doomscrolling" and it has worked wonders for my mental health. I hope you're better soon. I woke up during the night unable to breathe through my nose and it's such a pain. Just that time of year (irritants and allergens), but still...

  15. I've been wondering about Joanne too and, fearing the worst, did some searches...but found nothing. Sigh. If by Tom you mean Tom Stephenson, I think he had a stoke awhile back. He quit blogging but just lately he's been posting more on Instagram and has answered some comments there.

    1. The worst part is interrupted sleep. Being exhausted and all stuffed up has rendered me useless. I took some night time cold medication and slept the clock around last night. Feeling functional today.

  19. Sorry to hear the cold has you sidelined, but 48 starter plants by the window is the ultimate sign of hope! Ten tons of gravel sounds like the only way to win the 'Spring vs. Mud' battle—get some rest and let the plants do the heavy lifting for a bit.

    1. If plants did heavy lifting, I would have a lot more of them, to be sure. It sounds as if the Shifes had a 'grand' spring break

  21. Do you and Tim have heavy equipment to spread the gravel? I hope so, when Jim and I were younger we spread tons of rocks with wheel barrows to hold a bank. We could not do that now. I'm glad to hear about Joanne, I think about her and then don't know if emailing is intrusive or not. Feel better soon. Colds are the worst.

    1. No...Al has a dump truck. He just opens the gate just a little and lets the gravel out slowly as he drives forward. he does a terrific job and it requires only spreading.

I actually contacted a relative of hers on FB. I hesitated for months, for the very same reason. The relative said she had a set back but was about to come home. I did not ask questions and I did not broadcast it, not having permission to do so.

  22. I've been rather out of blogging and visiting with so much to do over here. Too many funeral and hospital visits and losing people. I guess it comes with our age, but it's hard.
But I keep hearing all the crazy, horrible things happening in the news and it makes my head spin.
Hawaii's been rather hit hard with bad weather too. Sigh...
