...and then there was one:
Remember the lonely Maytag repairman commercials? Meet Maytag.
There is hope though. We once owned a Maytag washer. It was a piece of crap. We would have offered the poor lonely repairman a room in our house and a seat at the table just to keep it running.
So...maybe someone needs a pouncey, purr-y pain in the butt for his or her very own. We will not abandon hope for little Maytag.
I put the ad on Facebook. Everybody and his brother wanted the two blue eyed Siamese looking ones. The first went promptly, with no complications at all to a little girl having a birthday. The pictures of 'Narnia' were adorable.
The im's came in regularly, one after another. One woman wanted the other blue eyed cat desperately. Her own cat had passed away and this one was an image of her dear departed cat. Begged me. I had 4 other people wanting the same cat. I politely told them the white one was spoken for.
Much wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Then I got ghosted by the woman with the sad story.
That is when things got very crazy. All the cats were taken multiple times over, but no one actually came for any of them.
I would spend big chunks of time patiently sending pictures and answering questions only to have them discover that they lived five hours away from me. Some people wanted the cat delivered. Other people were irritated that the neutering would be "on them". (The cats are only 6 weeks old. They are too young to be neutered.)
After a solid week of this, yesterday, a woman messaged me: "Are any of the blue eyed siamese still available?" I sent her a picture. She wanted the cat. She lived a hour away. "GREEEEAAATTTTTT!" I groaned to myself. She had to work the following day but could pick it up afterwards. I had heard this spiel before. I had to drive back to the old house, so I told her that I could meet her in the Aldi parking lot, which cut her travel time in half. Much to my surprise, she was there to meet me just as planned. She was thrilled with the kitten and sent me pictures later. Her kids named her Snowball and love her dearly. The picture showed a played out Snowball curled up in her husband's armpit, sleeping comfortably.
And then there were three. In the middle of the night, a med evac nurse wanted to know if I had any tiger striped ones left. She also lived an hour away. I said, "well, I have a hair cut in Warren. I could meet you..." "Deal!" she said. When I asked her which cat I should bring, she said 'Bring them both. Kittens are a lot more fun when there are two!"
I thought for sure that I was going to be ghosted on that one, but she met me as planned. They had just lost their old tiger, and the family was missing having a cat around the house. I felt quite good about The Wondertwins' new home in the country.
It has been quite an experience. Amazing to me that people simply make plans to take a kitten and never show up.That was irritating.
But the most outrageous exchange I had was with a woman who had to have a female cat. Many people have preferences for one reason or another. That part is not uncommon. But at some point it came out that her other cat is female and that's why she couldn't have a male. I said, "your female is not neutered?" She replied that it did not need to be. It was an indoor cat!
Now I know from experience that a cat in heat is very wiley about escaping. If she had two unneutered females, it was simply doubling the chance of unwanted kittens.
That woman ghosted me and I am not sorry. I did not want her to have a cat.
I have had the same experience with Facebook Marketplace. I would list lots of children's clothing for my daughter. People would message right away and ask me to hold them until after work. I would put other messages on a list. Sometimes I would get to number 5 or 6. Excuses, ask to hold longer, last minute postpone or just ghosted. I did sell a few lots right away. After a week the rest went to charity. I told my daughter I would rather pay her to take them to the charity than go through that again.
ReplyDeleteWhat is up with people!!!!
I use to use freecycle. It got frustrating for the very reasons you listed. I gave them 24 hours from their pick up time and then just went on to the next person. The original person who claimed it often became furious that I had reneged, and would rant about their desperate need and give me some heartbreaking reason that the had not been able to make it as promised. I got sick of it. Now I set the things on the curb, post an picture on the local garage sale site and remove it when the item is gone. Unfortunately, one cannot do this with kittens!
DeleteWow! All I can say is you are very patient. It's so sad that there are that many inconsiderate people around. Here in Hawaii, we actually have a problem with too many feral cats running around. You'd think that with so many cats around we wouldn't have so many feral chickens. Amazing!
ReplyDeleteNot really Kay. It was very irritating. But I really had to get rid of cat's. I had no choice bur to deal with it.
DeleteI have little experience at online selling, let alone giving away. I can only think people get drunk and make contact with you, without any real intention of taking a cat.
ReplyDeleteAt least it sounds like you had a good result...eventually.
It's important that the kittens go to people you 'like', daughters cat had 5 kittens, one lives with us and the others all went to nice homes.
ReplyDeleteGetting in a pickle with your kittens. I once put a beloved horse in an ad as free, the response was overwhelming, choosing was so difficult. She went to a home for children in the end.
ReplyDeleteI seem to have the same problem with freecycle and trash nothing.
ReplyDeletePeople ask for something then play you about not picking up the item, but sometimes I come up trumps, a kind gentleman drove 20 miles to bring me some crutches for my hip op.
The lady tried to pay us $20 for driving the two tigers on to meet her. I told her to put her money away, that I was coming in to town any way. We laughed later, Tim and I. She was taking two. We would have delivered them.
DeleteI hope the little one will find a good home. It must feel strange when all their littermates disappear one by one.
ReplyDeleteOur local cat lady does charge for her rescues, but she does have them vetted and neutered. She keeps them until they are older than yours.
ReplyDeleteYou know, AC, the blue eyed kittens got such attention that once I find a home for Maytag, I am going to catch his older blue eyed cousins and bring them inside. I can get them neutered next month and find homes for them. That would make 7 cats gone. The remainder will be unable to procreate. We can live with that.
DeleteLaughed out loud at your Maytag washer description. We recently had to dispose of our FIVE year old Maytag washer. It expired...there was NO cure for that piece of crap. Built in obsolescence. Exasperating.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, your wee furry Maytag is a lovely boy and I'm sure he'll find a forever home soon. I have no idea why some people behave so badly these days, except that they too just might be pieces of crap.
Our Maytag was a very expensive one. After 11 months it simply quit. Turned out that it was a faulty mother board. I didn't even know washers HAD a mother board. No worries it was under warranty. The washer was repaired. A year later, the motherboard failed again. It was NOT under warranty.. the replacement was over $300. We just got another washer.
DeleteNawww kittens are so cute...
ReplyDeleteWant him? Your new kitten would have a friend!
DeleteMaytag is lovely!
ReplyDeleteYes, I've had that experience with Freecycle
I think everyone has.
DeleteIf I lived near you, Maytag would come to me. He is so like Pippi and I have a soft spot for black and white kittens. Glad the others went to the right homes.
ReplyDeleteHe kills me. He eats until he is full as a tick. Then he waddled off to the nearest lap, gives himself a careful grooming, and falls asleep.
DeleteYou have put a lot of time and energy into making sure those kitties have good homes and will be neutered. When you take on a responsibility, you do not shirk it.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why people don't do what they say. I think they know how much trouble they put you through and like to be a nuisance.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand people at all. Glad the kittens have found good homes.
ReplyDeleteExcept for Maytag...need a cat, Pixie?
DeleteAwwww, poor Maytag! He's very cute though and I'm sure someone will take him.
ReplyDeleteBeing ghosted is not surprising. People are very strange online. The veil of anonymity seems to give them permission to say and do anything no matter how impolite. I have similar experiences when I put an item on Freecycle -- people will want it desperately until suddenly they don't.
Years ago I had an indoor kitten that went into heat and it was a very LOUD experience. (The vet told me at the time to let her go into heat once before spaying her. I don't think they suggest that anymore. Anyway I eventually spayed the cat and she lived a long and happy life!)
Oh dear. I do remember the caterwauling. He sounds very judgemental to say, but she was someone who, the more she talked, the more obvious it was that the last thing she needed was another cat..
DeletePeople are so interesting, and sometimes not in a good way. Maytag is a cute little rascal, he'll find a good home & as long as you are managing the process it will be a good one.
ReplyDeleteHe's a little stinker, is what he is. Never met a dish of food he didn't have his face in.
DeleteWhen we downsized out of the North Carolina house into an RV, I put a lot of ads on Craigslist "free come get it, owner will not help you." We got the most response to the wheel chair ramp we did not want. Those kittens are adorable. I miss having cats.
ReplyDeleteAllison, I have to say that it was a shock to hear that you are planning your trip back to Arizona. It feels like you and Jim just got back to Washington! This summer has flown by!
DeleteHere in Florida, we have a problem with people wanting kittens and want the whole litter, they usually have a child with them that loves cats, that is for show. These people want the kittens to feed their snakes so they will take all of them. This sends up a red flag if we are trying to give kittens away. Sad.
ReplyDeleteUgh. I have heard awful stories like that. I don't understand cruelty.
DeleteWow, what a journey! It's so sweet that you're helping find homes for these kittens. I've heard that can be a real rollercoaster, and it sounds like you've had quite the experience with people's flakiness. The story about the woman who wanted a female cat but didn't believe in spaying... that's so wild. It's great you trusted your gut on that one.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear that Maytag, Snowball, and the "Wondertwins" found good homes. It's always so heartwarming to see pictures of them settling in. Good on you for not giving up on Maytag.

We still have Mzytzg. I am hopeful. .
DeleteI had a Maytag washer/dryer set that lasted forever and was sorry when they finally (after many years) gave out. I guess that was back when things were made to last and didn't have electronics in them.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I was reading an article. People do not want all the bells and whistles and computerized, song playing appliances. People want the plain old machines because the old simplified machines seemed to last forever.
DeleteLeah's been selling some of my furniture and stuff on Facebook Marketplace. She has had a couple people not show up, but most of them have. I guess we have been lucky. People are less likely to show up that cheaper the item is she has found. Interesting. I'm glad they have all gone to good homes. Soon Maytag will find the perfect home, too, I'm sure. :)
ReplyDeleteWow, what a saga, Debby! I am so glad you are finding good homes for them though.
