Today was the day.
He was scooped up and put in his carrier, which I am sure conjured up bad memories involving visits to the vet. He yowled forlornly from the old house to the new.
I started him off in the basement so that he knew the location of his litter box. He immediately hid. You might remember that he hid for weeks when I first got him.
I didn't know how this would go, but after several hours of hiding, he began to 'talk' to me from the basement...he meows, I talk to him, he meows back. He came from his hiding place and so I simply picked him up and brought him upstairs.
I set him on our bed. I figured that would be a place familiar to him. He was very content, and from there he explored the rooms one by one.
I think he recognizes that he is home.
Hmm, that was quick. I suppose it will be a while before you let him outside.

ReplyDeleteWhat a relief that he isn't hiding - we had a cat that hid for so long that we worried he was dead and some other critter was eating the food we put in his bowl, but there WAS poop in the litter box to comfort us. Finally he emerged and I cried.

I cat sit and had my sons' cat for 5 weeks while they toured and visited friends in Germany. They were stationed there about ten years so have a lot of friends to visit. Anyway, they came yesterday and took her home, my house seems so empty now, but I don't need a cat full time.
ReplyDeleteCat's are funny. Last night I was shaking mine upside down, yelling, drop the mouse, which she did. The mouse ran off and I put the cat down, convinced she would seek revenge. When I brushed her later, she purred as usual.

I think Houdi needs a feline friend. We have seven cats. You need them when you live in the countryside Debby.

ReplyDeleteI can't even imagine what my orange cat, Maurice, would do if we tried to move her. Surgery might be required and not on her.

ReplyDeleteGlad Houdi settled in quickly for him. I once adopted a cat that just would not come out of a closet, he didn’t eat, didn’t use the litterbox and after 4 days, I grabbed him and took him back. I thought he would die in the closet. At that point I got a dog. She is still with me 11 years later. I really think I prefer cats but I have had both and at the same time too. It sounds like you had a fun, busy time away. Now you are home to stay. Gigi
ReplyDeleteMy grandma moved many times with cats - her trick was to butter their paws when they got to the new house, so when they washed themselves they got the scent of the new house.

ReplyDeleteAnd good news about Houdi. One never knows with cats. Dogs seem to immediately know their new homes, oddly. I have wondered why that is.
Houdi settling in may take time for him. We had to bring Cats along whenever we moved and the transition could be more difficult for some, just like it is with some Humans.
