...other than that how did you like the play?
We had a very nice trip to Canada.
It ended early. Our car was stolen out of the hotel parking lot. The car was locked of course, but our passports were in the glove box.
Also my favorite shoes were in the back.
Everyone has been kind and helpful. We are headed home now.

What? How could that happen? Was it valet parking? Did you recover it?
ReplyDeleteNo. I doubt we will. The guys were in the car and pulling out in literal seconds. You would not even have guessed they were stealing the car. Turns out Lexus cars before 2021 were notoriously easy to steal. So easy that Lexus dealerships had a free preventative 'fix'. We had no clue.
DeleteUnbelievable!! Hopefully you had full coverage on the car on your insurance plan to cover the theft. Sometimes people don't carry comprehensive coverage on older cars. I can't even imagine all the stuff you will have to go through to get back to normal. I am so sorry this has happened to you.
DeleteYes, we had full coverage. We have frozen our credit. Tonight will be spent filling out paperwork for the passports and insurance co: regarding contents.
DeleteI am so sorry that you had this happen to you. I am glad you are on your way back home.
ReplyDeleteWe are home.
DeleteWhat, your shoes too! So sorry about the crashing feelings that I have reading this, and yet I know you must have had a zillion more to go through that!
ReplyDeleteIt is just such a shocking thing. We still can't quite believe it.
DeletePassports can be replaced but shoes? I feel your pain. Glad you're on the way home.
ReplyDeleteWe are very worried about identity theft.
DeleteOh no! Having just done a car trip with lots of car overnight in hotel parking lot situations this is disturbing, and the shoes would break my heart.
ReplyDeleteCeci
The car was parked right outside the office windows.
DeleteOh no, I feel terrible for you both.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly was a huge shock.
DeleteWhat!!! Of all the crazy things to happen. What a shame, Debby.
ReplyDeleteEspecially losing those shoes.
Joking of course. Losing your passports is really problematic.
I hope you get your car and all your things back.
We aren't going to see that car again.
DeleteO.M.G. I am so sorry that this happened to you and Tim. How disappointing—and maddening.
ReplyDeleteBonnie in Minneapolis
My sister said we both must be fit to be tied. No. Not really. Mad isn't going to solve anything.
DeleteHow dreadful and stressful. I suppose like here, there is a slim chance of it being recovered intact. I also guess the car being stolen in another country makes it all the more difficult.
ReplyDeleteI doubt we will see it again. The police never even came out. They did not take a serial number or anything.
DeleteThat's strange.
DeleteThat is what kept me up last night. But when I talked the our claims provider this morning, he did say that he had given them the VIN. That was a relief.
DeleteOh No - what a horrible thing to happen, especially in a different country. Hope you get home safely.
ReplyDeleteTurns out that you can get back across the border with only a driver's license and a police report.
DeleteOh how awful for you. Car, passports AND shoes. That certainly cut your holiday short.
ReplyDeleteYes. We scooted home to take care a lot of red tape.
DeleteShocking. coming out and finding the car was no longer there, all a great unheaval, but you can replace them all. even the shoes.
ReplyDeleteWe couldn't believe it. We thought it had been mistakenly towed.
DeleteWell, this won’t give you good feelings about Canada. So sorry about that. Where were you?
ReplyDeleteNiagara Falls. We thought it was the geese we had to watch out for.
DeleteLol Debby, at least you still have your sense of humor. Commiserations. X, Joan
DeleteWow, Debbie, I can't imagine having to deal with that. I am glad that everyone was helpful and kind. Lord. Never a dull moment!
ReplyDeleteIt is quite a pile of red tape, for sure.
DeleteNOT THE SHOES!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI know you don't want advice, just sympathy and I DON'T BLAME YOU. But you might want to add checking your credit reports to your daily routine. I will say several four letter words in support of you. I am so sorry.
We are locking our credit, reporting the passports as stolen. A lot of running around to do.
ReplyDeleteThat bloody sucks. I'm sorry. Hope everything turns out okay.
ReplyDeleteIt is sorting itself out. It is such a shame though. It was a nice car.
DeleteI'm sorry this happened to you.
ReplyDeleteIf I had my druthers, I'druther it hadn't.
DeleteMy heart fell when you mentioned your passports. This is an added complication. No advice, just sympathy.
ReplyDeleteThanks Boud.
DeleteOh my goodness! This is awful. And the police didn't come out? What the hell?!?! Why not?
ReplyDeleteI really have no idea. that was kind made me feel like this wasn't much of a priority.
DeleteJust never leave your passports unattended. I am so sorry your trip up here turned out so badly. If the car was newish it would already be on a ship to another country. If older ifs gone joy riding and might get recovered.
ReplyDeleteIt is easy to be a quarterback when the game is over. Yes. I could have carried them around in my purse, but purses get snatched. I could have left them in the hotel room, but hotel robberies happen too. We made a decision and in the end it did not work out.
DeleteThat's just crazy.
ReplyDeleteIt was.
DeleteI thought Canada was so much better than that! I hope your insurance comes through for you! SMH
ReplyDeleteIt is a waiting game. It will work out the way it is meant to work out.
DeleteOh no!!!! That's horrible. And made worse by the loss of the passports and the shoes! What a crazy world.
ReplyDeleteI am almost more upset by the passports than I am the car, to be honest. Almost..
DeleteI am so sorry for all the distress and red tape you are and will be encountering. I apologize on behalf of decent law abiding Canadians.
ReplyDeleteThis makes me sick. 🇨🇦
We both spent a pretty sleepless night. I woke up early and ducked out to get the insurance documentation we needed, and the list passport documentation we needed, and then get gas and head back home because we needed to have the Canadian rental back to Erie by 1. When I got my card for the gas, I was actually shaking. I think it was a delayed reaction. But it is now the end of the day and we have got forms filled boxes ticked. The bank manager was so very helpful, and we were surprised at how great the insurance company has been super...so far, anyhow. One step at a time, we are getting it sorted.
DeleteAs a Canadian, I feel terrible and ashamed of what should have been a fun vacation for you. We do have car theft crime here in Toronto, by Organized Crime. My car is not one that they have orders for thankfully and it is older like me. I hope you will come back and give us another try. We are mostly good people, but we do have some bad ones in the bunch. So sorry about those funky shoes, they might be hard to replace. Gigi
DeleteIt was a pretty shocking way to end a vacation, but it certainly is not characteristic of all the other people we met on this trip. Contrary to anonymous' airy assertions, this was a professional job. Days before we got there, 9 people had been arrested as part of a stolen car ring. They steal cars and take them to Quebec, where they are quickly shipped to West Africa. The number one targeted car? Lexus RX models. They are stolen at a rate of 2 to 3 a day. We had no idea. the more you know...
DeleteSha can't get insurance without having one of those steering wheel clamps.
DeleteI was going to say "What, you came up to Canada and didn't pop by Saskatchewan to see me?!" but in view of the nasty experience you had, I'd better say WHATTHEHELLSOMEPEOPLESHOULDBESHOT. Tsk. Assholes abound. -Kate
ReplyDeleteYou know, it was shocking, but really, people have really gone out of their way to be kind and helpful. That has been a nice counterbalance, you know?
DeleteGod, that is just awful. Has to make one feel so violated. Glad you are home. Some people just suck.
ReplyDeleteYep, they sure do. But you know what? Some people don't.
DeleteAwwwww, the miracle shoes are gone. I am so sorry this has happened to you two.
ReplyDelete79 cents right out the window!
DeleteAn awful thing to happen.. Hope the insurance sorts out quickly.
ReplyDeleteAll that extra paperwork....and trying to remember what you left in the car!
I have a small flat bag that just fits passport and travel docs and folding money, on a. cord...that stays round my neck discreetly under my clothes..
That is a good thing to consider.
DeleteThat is just not neighbourly. It will be a holiday to remember, but I hate that this is what it will be remembered for.
ReplyDeleteOh there were good memories!
ReplyDeleteThat is a rough turn for a trip that started so well, losing a car from a hotel parking lot is a shock, passports gone makes everything more complicated, the shoes detail adds a strange personal sting in the middle of it all. It is good to hear people have been kind, support makes a difference in moments like this. Heading home feels like the right move after such disruption. Hope the journey back is steady, what has helped most while dealing with the paperwork so far?
ReplyDeleteSo much stuff to do. Take freezing our credit. It sounds simple enough, doesn't it? Except it needs to be done on line. There are three reporting agencies. The first thing you need to do is make separate accounts for each of us at all three agencies. 6 separate operations each on slightly different. A writing down of user names and passwords so that when we need to unfreeze our credit, we can do so. Then the actual process of freezing our credit, each process at each agency slightly different. It didn't help that each of these agencies kept 'helpfully' trying to redirect you to free credit reports, tips on how to improve your credit. Several times I got through the process only to discover that they were asking me for a credit card, meaning that somehow I had been redirected without noticing, since freezing your credit is free. I finally just went to my bank, explained the situation and she sat down with us. She also struggled at times. We got through. Reporting the lost passports: doing this online, I kept receiving the message that it needed to be done in person. I called the state department who said I needed to do it on line. I finally just got the forms at the post office and mailed everything in. I think the fact that I was doing this on my phone made it easier to lose my way without noticing. My prescription reading glasses were in the stolen car. Starting these things seemed insurmountable.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a nightmare ending to a happy time. Hopefully the good memories will overcome the bad very soon.
ReplyDeleteHorrible.
