Ordinary

There are things that I love about this house. The tile floor in the bathroom is above the heating stove in the basement. That tile absorbs the heat and feels wonderful on bare feet.

On the other hand the tin roof....yesterday, in the still house, reading with a purring cat on my lap, the snow falling outside, suddenly, snow slid from the roof. The cat exploded, leaping from my lap, upsetting my coffee cup on the carpet  in his mad bolt for the basement. Adding to the chaos, a suncatcher fell to the floor and shattered. So that was not so wonderful. We will have to look into some sort of baffle system.

Today, we drove an hour and change to have lunch with Tim's family. Cousins. One of his brothers. One of his sisters. It was nice to see everyone. A notebook went around of genealogy notes. Much of the discussion was on the subject of their grandfather. Tim and five of his cousins were born in 1957. They are the oldest of that generation, and their grandfather died when they were all 3 year olds.

So they were sharing their memories of him and stories they'd heard of him. One of the things was about his great love of horses.

Probably 20 years ago, Tim's mother loved our big old house in town. She gave me a photograph of a man in a fedora standing by his horse. She told me it was something that she had picked up at a yard sale. She thought it suited our house. I hung it on our wall with an old keywound clock topped by a rearing horse.

Tim liked the picture too. He thought it looked like his grandfather. He was surprised when I told him what his mother had said, but he had no reason to doubt her.

But as this man was discussed, it just began to remind me of that picture. I said, "would anyone here recognize him in a pictuŕe?" and someone actually had a picture of him. Looks like the same man in the same hat standing alongside a different horse.

There was quite a bit of excitement about our picture as well as curiosity about how it came to be that Tim's mother failed to recognize her own father. Was her mind beginning to fail even then? I have an idea she was losing her vision. She was blind by the time she died.

But it is a nice discovery. Now that we know what it is, it needs to be brought to the new house. Copies made and shared.

I had a Reuben sandwich at luncĥ today. I never had one and always meant to try one. It was very nice.

We drove home along country roads that Tim has driven all his life. A bald eagle swept down and hovered about six feet over the hood of the car. We marveled at the sight while it decided which way it needed to go, and then powerfully veered off to the right.

It has warmed up considerably outside tonight. It is now pouring rain. By tomorrow morning when we get out of bed, all the snow will be gone.

  4. I haven’t looked outside yet, but I expect that there is still snow out there. However, at least it was off street yesterday. It was too early to drive on ruts.

  5. How nice to have a family gathering and see the similarities and differences between the cousins.
I had to look up Reuben sandwich, too. Very satisfying, I imagine.

  6. Our snow left yesterday so I finally could get my car out again. I want to go to Costco to look for a gift for my neighbours, as they put my garbage and recycling wheelies out to the curb for me. They sometimes do a bit of weeding and trimming in the yard too. I am lucky to have them. I am hoping the weather stays nice till the beginning of the week when Costco is less busy. You are lucky the cat didn’t scratch you when he took a leap. My dog did one of those jumps off my lap and gave me a big gash on my leg with lots of blood. We were both shocked. Gigi

  7. The notebook idea is so great!!!! And how wonderful that you were able to identify the photo, what a coincidence!!! And kismet and fate and magic! I really think that was cool.
I have a neighbor with a metal roof and she has some sideways pieces that help with sliding snow. This the limit of my construction knowledge, lol.

  8. What a lovely day you had, except for the cat.

What are you doing with your old house in town?

  9. How nice to share family memories in a group like that. We have so many questions that will never be answered now that my parents are gone and we have no one of that generation to ask.

  10. Reuben sandwiches are probably my favorite sandwich with the possible exception of a Cuban sandwich. Have you had one of those?
Interesting how that picture came into your possession. And yes, odd.

  11. Families sometimes have endless discussions of family history.

  12. That picture story is odd! I'm glad you identified the grandfather while it was still possible. Eventually people in pictures inevitably fade into anonymity.

  13. That cat! The picture story was cool but I am more intrigued you had your first reuben. Wow! I think my first Reuben was 1972, have probably had at least 200 since and now I'm craving one real bad 😋

  14. Now I'm longing for a Reuben sandwich; they've been a big favorite of mine for years, especially with a sour pickle spear and Cole slaw. Yum. Not health food, for sure, but if you have one a year......maybe as a reward for labeling a bunch of family pictures while I still know who they are?

  15. A disability support network have recently opened up a shop (then 3 more, because it was such a success) teaching their clients hospitality and they sell a most delicious reuben sandwich

  16. I always enjoyed reuben sandwiches back in my carnivore days. I can't believe this was your first!
    Wonderful meme.

  17. The warmth of heated bathroom tiles and the sudden chaos of the cat’s startled escape paint such a vivid picture of life’s small dramas. And that moment with the bald eagle must have felt like nature giving you a nod. A Reuben sandwich and a country drive sound like a perfect finish.

  18. We had to put snow bars on our roof so the snow didn't slide off all at once and take the guttering with it!

  19. That is wonderful that you identified the photo!! Sounds like a great family gathering. I can't imagine five cousins all born in the same year. That is so cool!
Allie is also terrified of loud noises. I can easily picture such an event--lol!

  20. What a great day, family mystery apparently solved. I love things like that and there's no longer an older generation left to answer my questions. My aunt was the best, she remembered everything and I miss her every day. I love a good reuben, not too often though. Love the meme, too.

  21. Cats!! Some cat explosions are truly hilarious, this one not so much!

  22. Only a cat could have created such chaos in a split second! Yes, snow catchers or something next.

  23. Your description of the cat departing your lap reminded me of Tom and Jerry cartoons and the spinning feet on a running cat.

  24. Gosh! Art and I used to love Rueben sandwiches when we lived in Illinois. We haven't had it since moving to Hawaii. Hmmm... I'll have to check the menus to see if they even offer it here.

I'm glad you're here!
