The Just So Story

Somebody mentioned it a while back, but something I love about the new house is how very easy it is to keep on top of, cleaning-wise. I know that it will make me sound like a 'Stepford Wife', but this pleases me a lot.

I can sweep the floors in 10 minutes. I can haul out the vacuum and get all the carpets done in about the same amount of time. I plug it in one outlet by the pantry and can quickly do the whole house from that one outlet.

The dishwasher is a huge time saver. Supper cleanup is a simple matter of washing a couple pans.

After my shower, I give the tub and tile a quick spritz, wipe it down with a microfiber cloth. I wipe down the sink and counter when I am done with my teeth, and then wipe down the toilet before I leave.

Other than a dust a couple times a week, that's all I need to do. Every thing is just so.

I have time for the garden. I have time for a walk. I am reading a book. A leisurely phone conversation. If I want to walk over snd visit with my sister, I can.

It is what I expected retirement to be like

I think Tim is adapting to the slower pace too. This morning, he said "let's take a run to Corry. We can see what Happ's has. I would like to stop and check the upcoming sale at the auction house. We haven't done that for a while.

A quick look and both of us said 'those chairs!' at about the same time. The chairs will match just so perfectly with our little kitchen  table.

'Himself' is very pleased we are going to an auction tomorrow.

We did not dare to drive the truck to pick up furniture today. The forecast called for a rainy day, but found that the bow front cabinet would fit in the Subaru just  so. That came home. It also fit perfectly right where I thought it should be.

This really is a wonderful change of pace for us, and I am enjoying it very much.

Oh...and PS, tomorrow I am getting two more chicks. Don't worry. I have done the chicken math very carefully.

  2. Sounds lovely. I wonder if I deep cleaned very throughly, could I get to the point you describe where keeping it clean was that quick and easy? Probably will never find out. And congratulations on the 2 more chicks! Will we see the whole flock?

We are just having a slow and very nice week. I love your new pace, enjoy it and all the other things your can do now with your extra time. I even put my pans in the dish washer now if I decide to cook.

  9. Yep. That's what retirement is meant to be!

  10. Some good buys. What won't be buzzing around in your head is what you have to do at home, or what you aren't doing, or what haven't done.

  11. It sounds as if you are making a perfect retirement. Chickens are good companions, always ready to join you for coffee in the morning and sorting out the garden.

  14. Ahhh, that IS what retirement is all about, doing what you want, when you want. We have a small duplex, and it's so easy to keep it clean. I never wanted a bigger place because it meant more stuff, more cleaning, more yard. Just NO. I like doing all my fun things, not doing more of the maintenance things. Enjoy your life, Debby!

  15. The phrase that springs to mind is “Made in the Shade.” It looks like your life is going almost perfectly.

  16. Are you giving your chickens names? When you said Just So I thought you were referring to the book Just So Stories, one of my favourites as a child lol. Gigi

  19. This reminds me so much of one of my favorite children's books. It is "Miss Suzy" by Miriam Young. It is the story of, yes, a mouse named Miss Suzy and her life in her beloved little house in an oak tree. She gets up every morning and sets everything to rights which gives her the greatest pleasure. But then...adventures ensue!

  21. You've reminded me of being so irritated at reading Flylady's organization/housekeeping tips because they were directed mainly at women. But the fact is that it IS still women who do most if not all of the domestic chores even though both sexes benefit equally from a clean and comfortable nest, and the neverending undervaluing of housework is ongoing and exhausting. (Glad you aren't finding it so.) I think the domestic work is what creates a restful, safe, and enjoyable home, and if we don't have that, really what do we have?
