Still here.

 Quiet day today. (Thank goodness!)

We got up early and went to Eastern States to buy the rest of the trim boards. We saw a couple with a 5 foot roll of 'bubble wrap', a product that goes under a tin roof. They were trying to stuff it into a Kia. It was not working.

We stopped and tried to help them, but there was just no way that it was going to go. I said, "Where do you need this to go?" and the man said ruefully, "Corry."

I said, "We're going to Corry..."

The man asked where we lived in Corry.

I said, "We don't, but we need to go through Corry to get our load to Grand Valley."

Tim said, "Yeah. We can haul it for you. We'll have room."

The guy said, "Really? Do you know where Gigi's is?" It made me laugh because that's Tim's favorite diner. "Yes," I said. We sure do know where Gigi's is."

Tim and he hauled the roll over to our truck and slid it under the tonneau cover. I waited with his wife, who was the tiniest bit cross. "I TOLD him it wouldn't fit in the car. I wanted him to bring the truck but nooooooo..." We commismerated about stubborn men, and she said, "Do you know -------- -------? He lives in Grand Valley." Could have knocked me over with a feather. He is a distant cousin. She said, "My sister was his mother." I said, "Well, my maternal grandmother was his father's sister." Just made me laugh.

Anyways, while we waited, Tim showed me the siding he wanted. It's not what I would have chosen, but you know what? At this point, I'm tired of debating every last little thing. I just want to get this done. I told him it didn't matter to me.

We met our new friends in the parking lot of the diner. He had just pulled in, so the timing was perfect. While we were there, since it was shortly after noon, Tim decided that we should have lunch. The man does not miss a chance to have one of those big hamburgers.

We got some more trim up in the last bedroom, but it started to rain, so we had to haul the saw back inside. The rain is making the raised beds look nice, and I just can't get over how quickly pumpkin vines grow. Every day, there are more blossoms on the tomatoes, and that makes me happy too.

One of the things that we got today was the pulldown steps to the attic. Normally you would put them in before finishing the ceilings, but the thing is that if the inspector had seen that, we'd have had to put electric lights in the attic. We didn't want to do that, because we have windows going in on each end for ventilation and light. So...when the inspector started in on everything we needed to do to meet the standards for an attic, we simply decided to stop talking about the attic. The inspection is complete, and now we'll put those stairs and windows in.

To reduce the dust from that job, Tim wanted to have the bedroom door on. We can tarp the room, and shut the door while we work, and hopefully the dust will stay in that room instead of settling all over the house. Of course, we don't have bedroom doors yet, so that was something else we needed to take care of. We made a run to Lowe's when we were done and picked out the doors we liked. Then, I walked around the corner and saw two special order doors that had been returned and were now on clearance. I called Tim around, and he liked them just fine, and so, for about half the price of just one door we wanted, we got the two doors. They are primed and ready to be painted.

I didn't walk today. It's rainy and I didn't feel like getting caught in it.

A sad thing happened Saturday. A young man with a new sports car was horsing around. He hit another car at a high rate of speed. Both vehicles hit a bridge and burst into flames. Both drivers were killed and the girl friend was life flighted to Pittsburgh. The road had been closed for hours while they cleaned up the scene. We passed over the bridge 4 times today, and it is a bit shocking to see the blackened concrete and the damage and to remember that on a beautiful June day, in the blink of an eye, two lives were lost.

Our hero, John Fetterman, with his thoughts on the Big Beautiful Bill. Start it at 37 seconds. Glad that he's got his priorities straight.

That's all I have to say. The news gets worse by the day.

Well...except that Bryan Kohberger has decided to plead guilty to four counts of murder in exchange for the death penalty being taken off the table.

  1. Another productive day on the house...and new friends too!
Young men and sporty cars rarely go well together 🙄

    1. It was quite a funny coincidence, but it is a very small town. The entire township has less than 575 people. I am related to at least 20 of them. Combined with the people we know, and the people we know of, I guess it would have been a bigger surprise if there was NOT a bit of overlap.

  2. A good day with added new friends..and relatives!!

When will people realise that cars are tools not toys..and have to be respected just as much

  4. That was kind to help strangers, even if the man wasn't terribly bright. I would have offered to buy you lunch at the diner.
With quite strong rechargeable LED lamps now, fixed lighting in not such an issue in such spaces like an attic.

    1. The regulations dictated it must be wired lighting. Among other things.

  6. An 8 foot ladder fits in my Kia Soul with the seats pushed down! You are so lucky at finding just what you need at bargain prices. It would be nice if the big beautiful bill fails like everything else the pumpkin faced one touches..My daughters first husband was instantly killed when a high teenager sped up a hill on the wrong side of the road, went airborn and landed on top of my SIL’s car killing them both. 1. This was a four door sedan. The man's idea was that it could be fed through the driver side back window and out the passenger side. The roll was too thick.

  7. One of the radiologists I used to work with, a lovely man, about 38, loved to race his Mercedes. One of his close friends lost control of his car, crashed and died. The radiologist was ok but the other man died, leaving his wife and children behind. What a waste.
What are you guys going to do with all your spare time when the house is finished?

    1. Pixie, the idea of just having time to do what I want to do just brings tears to my eyes sometimes. For years now, I have been wavering between working on projects and feeling guilty if I didn't. He is pushing for another house. I am not doing it. I refuse to do this to myself again.

    1. The difference between him and you, friend, is sanity. One family is outraged. They wanted him tried by a jury, convicted and sentenced to death. I understand their outrage. I truly, truly do. But the thing is, what would all of that change? I dunno. The fact that he has pled guilty and will never be free would be as much consolation as I could expect.

    2. Many of us in Idaho are so relieved that he pled guilty, to spare all of us the agony of a long, drawn-out, gruesome trial. But most of the comments in the paper are like your outraged family - they want the death penalty carried out. Life in prison is sufficient vengeance or me.

On a brighter note - you did a good deed for that Kia couple, and your raised beds are coming along so well. Yes, photos please.

  11. I suppose Kohberger understands that a plea to spare his life is as good as it's going to get. There can be no reasonable motive for such a crime but I hope one day we know more about what the heck was going on in his head. (The reporter in me wants to know.)

Very nice of you to help the couple with their "bubble wrap." And how funny that you have a family connection!

    1. You know, Steve, I really think that it was pretty straightforward. This was a very intelligent guy. He had studied crime scene investigation in depth, and even written a paper. I think he thought he was smarter than anyone else. I think he planned this crime for months, and his end goal was to sit back and enjoy watching the police dealing with public outrage as the struggled to solve his perfect crime. Sadly, for all involved, that is as good an explanation as we will ever get. 4 people were brutally murdered in what amounts to a case of mental masturbation.

The doors sounded just perfect! Good luck with the attic additions!
So sad about the sports car accident. He was probably showing off for said girlfriend, too. So sad.

  14. I listened to that Fetterman clip twice & I still don't know what he said. Teenagers and fast cars are a recipe for disaster. I still wonder how I survived, because an 18 yr old kid in a 55 Chev with about 500hp, terrible suspension, and essentially no brakes is monumentally stupid, which of course I was. Pure blind dumb luck.

  15. Fetterman is getting dragged up one side of twitter and down the other. No one can believe he said that on camera. I love how you circumvent the inspectors, and just don't talk about the attic. Does Tim want a new house because he needs something to do? Could he start a handyman business of just him? Finding people to do small jobs in Spokane is just horrendous, is it like that where you live? Stand your ground on this one.

    1. Fetterman had a stroke before the election. I think this has badly affected him. He has missed 18% of votes, claimed they were not important. He says he determined that spending time with his young family is more important. He regularly slams democrats for making stands, calling it grandstanding, and says that he feels his job is to find a way to work with the system. This is a far different man than the one I went to hear speak, the one who promised to be our voice in DC.

  17. Gosh a mix of emotions - the sadness of the young lives lost. The frustration with comparing healthcare for millions vs missing a day at the beach. The plea deal with no answers for grieving families.
The serendipity of the bubble wrap and relatives! Outsmarting city hall (yay), finding the primed doors! A giant burger.
You guys are always on the go! I can't wait to see finished photos.

    1. The hotrodder was 24. The kid coming the other way, headed home, was only 23. The scene is shocking. The regulations are crazy. One fellow insisted we had to insulate the ceiling of the basement. The next one who came ((after we had done it, at no small expense) said it wasn't necessary. There were multiple instances of conflicting requirements. We did not want to run electric to the attic. We just wanted windows for ventilation and a place for the Christmas stuff.
