Amish Paypal?

First of all, thank you Pixie for sharing this:

A few days back, we'd gone up to visit Levi and Mattie. We took ice creams up for everyone. It made me laugh to see Grandma out there industriously digging a hole in her front yard. I always have to remind myself that Grandma is actually younger than I am, a fact that tickles her pink every time she re-realizes it.

Anyways, in the process of front porch sitting, Levi mentioned a book that he was trying to find on medicinal herbs. I pulled out my phone and went to Better World Books and found that they had one for sale for $5.91, listed as used, very good condition. Levi was surprised by that, because new, the books are $25. He said, "Well...if you can find it, it would be nice to get three of them, one for my mother and one for Mattie's mother." I did a little searching, and there were 3 of them, all of them listed at $5.91. I don't access my paypal on my phone, but promised him that I'd place the order as soon as we got home.

When I got home, I ordered the books. When it came to the shipping address, I used the drop down and saw that I'd never sent books to their house, so I went ahead and typed in their address, reviewed the order and accessed my paypal. I received the confirmation e-mail, which I didn't read through, but took it as affirmation that the order had gone through.

Today, it occurred to me that I'd not gotten anything telling me that the order had shipped, something that normally happens very promptly, so I went to the confirmation e-mail and much to my surprise, saw that somehow, Levi had been entered as the buyer, and I had become the ship-to address. I don't even know how that happened, but I know that Levi's name did not match the name on the paypal. I figured that the order had rejected. I contacted the company, but they told me it was too late to change anything. The order was on its way to me, which made me laugh. How on earth that order got through, I cannot even tell you. I know for a fact that Amish do not have paypal.

Today was a quiet day. Tim did some work at a tenant's house. We stopped by Mia's to finish the plumbing. No one was there, so we headed to the new house. The thunder rumbled and the rain fell, and 'the garden' looks as if it is doing well. Best of all, we've had a haze for the past week from the smoke of Canadian fires. The heavy rains yesterday and today knocked that back a bit.

Late edit: I neglected to link Pixie's page to her name. My apologies for the oversight, Pixie.

  1. I have the opposite dilemma. I ordered some shirts for my grandkids and wanted to use Paypal. I checked the address which had defaulted to the house they lived in a year ago and changed it to my address. I went to the checkout, used paypal which has my address as default also. When I checked the confirmation email it has the shirts shipping to the old address. I immediately emailed the company and they told me they can't change the shipping address. I have gotten updates and the darn shirts are shipping to a stranger out of town.
The shipper is USPS and my daughter did file a change of address - a year ago - so we are hoping it gets changed at the post office? My second hope is the family that purchased her house can somehow get in touch with her. We have no contact information for them.
The internet is a double edged sword.

    1. UGH!!!! I can tell you though, that there is a site called 'who lives at this address'. Type that address into the search bar and see what happens. In many cases you can come up with not only a name but a phone number too. (Yes, it's a huge invasion of privacy, IMHO, but this could come in handy for you.) Let me know how it works out.

  2. The payment details must have been correct, just not the name, if I understand correctly. It seemed a bit wasteful and out of character to buy three books. Why not one person read it and pass it on, but thinking more, it is more a reference book, so you want to know answers straight away, and they can't call or email each other to check something.

    1. Nope. The bill to information was Levi's address and name. I'm not sure how the error happened. I accessed the book site, signing in which brings up my account. When you check out, it gives you the option of where to send the books. There were several addresses there, friends, family that I have shipped books to before. Levi's address was not listed, so I edited my ship to addresses. When I was done, I paid the order, signing in as usual. How these two addresses were reversed, I cannot tell you. I'm glad they were.

The books in question are very fat reference books. They are not something you read and that's done. They are books that you would refer back to, matching symptoms to treatment, identifying herbs, etc. Giving a copy of the book to two other people is a way to maximize the outreach within their community.

  3. Thank you for the link to the French senator. Well, thank PIxie.
PayPal is powerful and usually efficient. I hope the books arrive in good order.

    1. We are just wary of supplying our credit card information on line. So many scammers out there, especially when you're dealing with an entity like e-bay.

  4. I had never heard of this supplier.

    1. BetterWorld Books? They do a great job. They are my go-to when I am looking for any book. I can generally find what I need.

  5. I have never used PayPal although I gather it is a very popular payment method for online shopping. I hope it all arrives safely!

    1. It is amazing to me that our paypal account was charged properly. Usually the fact that the bill to name was different from the name on the paypal account would have rejected the transaction.

  6. I would love Amish PayPal to deliver me something in their horse drawn carts Debby. It's a wonderful tale.

    1. Paypal is just a payment method. We have a credit card solely used for online purchases. It has an extremely low credit limit, and we want it that way. It is linked to the paypal account. When we pay for something on line, we go to paypal. They handle the payment, charging our card. This limits the number of people who are receiving our cc information.

    2. I know I have used PayPal Debby. It was my attempt at humour and I do admire the Amish way of life.

    3. A lot of it is sensible. Some of it makes no sense to me. But, I remind myself that I am not Amish and it does not matter whether it makes sense to me. But I take the sensible things, and try to incorporate that wisdom into my own life. TBH, I try to do that with everyone I meet. Everyone has some admirable thing.

  7. Thank you Pixie, hope all Americans listen to this. Too many are oblivious to what is really happening as trump is also controlling the media. I think we get more honest information up here. Gigi

    1. So many people just want to stick their heads in the sand. If they don't look, it will go away. If they can normalize it, it doesn't matter. If they can ignore the outrages, it isn't outrageous at all. It is amazing to me, really. What is happening here doesn't affect just us, just America.

But...I can assure you the ones that need to be watching this will not do so.

I have never used PayPal and doubt I ever will!

    1. We began it early on as a way to pay for e-bay purchases without providing our credit card info to strangers. They made a requirement that we needed to provide our banking info to link the account to, which we refused to do, so we simply stopped using them for a couple years. Suddenly, they decided that this was no longer so vitally important. The whole goal of it is to keep our bank stuff completely separate from the on line stuff.

  9. I listened to every second of that speech. Not only is the whole world watching, the whole world is aware of the collapse of this country.

    1. Wasn't it so good? Yes. The world is watching. Not only that, but they are taking steps to move on without us. We will be feeling the pain of these foolish and shortsighted decisions for years to come.

  10. It's pretty shocking that PayPal processed that order! You can see how people's identities get stolen whey they're that loose with the facts. But better for you and Levi in this case.

  11. That video was outstanding. One can only hope that it will stir some people to action. I can't tell if the EU is actually DOING something, or if they're just having meetings and photo ops. Currently China is producing drones for Russia that tow 50 km of fiber optic cable. This is not good, North Korea is also arming Russia. So, Ukraine is at war with three countries. I like Pay pal a lot, I ordered something from Ebay which never arrived, and they chased down the refund. $5.91 for a reference book is a good deal.
