Last night, Tim woke me up coughing. He coughed and coughed to the point it sounded like he was choking. This cold/plague/evil curse is awful stuff, but what makes it worse is that he will not take anything for it. I found a night time cough suppressant which works on the cough. It doesn't have all the added ingredients for sinus, body aches, fever, etc. Just the cough. I drink ginger tea through the day, just keep adding hot water to my cup. At night I take a dose of the cough suppressant which allows me to get some sleep.
Tim does neither and I don't know why, but he is a bullhead man. (Luckily, I, myself, have not a stubborn bone in my body. 😏) So he hacked himself awake, and on the other side of the bed, I was awake too. Even worse, I began to cough right along with him.
He was fine, he claimed. Didn't want to take anything for it, so I came out to the living room for awhile. Being a companionable sort, Mr Cough-y followed me out, sitting in his rocking chair. We were sitting there in the dark when suddenly there was a loud crack of thunder. Immediately after, it began to pour, the rain pounding down on the tin roof. There were a couple more cracks of thunder, and then as suddenly as it started, the rain began to taper off. While it was an astonishingly brief storm, it was intense.
So what was missing? Lightning. We saw no lightning. I have been puzzling over that. My first thought was that the fast moving storm was accompanied by extreme cloud cover we could not see in the night sky. Maybe the lightning took place above the clouds? But then, wouldn't it have muffled the thunder too? I mean those thunderclaps were sharp and loud.
Reading about it, thunder simply does not occur without lightning. So, I throw it out there for your consideration. What did we witness?
So eventually, Tim wandered down the hall and back to bed. I listened to him coughing in bed.
The sound was a lot more tolerable from the couch than from the bed, so I stayed right where I was, and eventually dozed off.
The motion detector light came on outside and I was jolted awake by the sound of two cats fighting and squalling. I leaped off the couch and went to the sliding doors. I expected to see Phantom, the mysterious new cat who sneaks in at night to finish off the extra cat food left from the two remaining ferals. I expected to see either of them doing battle. Much to my surprise, it was not Tiger or Possum. It was Freddie, who I did not know was outside!
I flung open the door and went flying out in my nightgown. Usually, Phantom runs away at the sight of a person, but not this time. To make it even worse, Houdi tore outside when I opened the door. Now there were three of them squalling. Only two were actually fighting. Houdi was merely stalking around with his tail straight up and three times its normal size. He circled the fight yowling the cat equivalent of 'Yeah! Take that! My brother is going to whip your butt!!' Meanwhile, Phantom and Fred were going at it hammer and tongs.
I had to go back in to put shoes on. The ten tons of gravel we had dropped earlier in the week was too much for my bare feet. When I came back out, Houdi was circling the car growling. I hopped in the driver's seat and started the car thinking Phantom would run back to the old house, and Fred would head to the porch. Instead, Phantom ran for the old house with Freddie hot on his heels, both of them screaming their heads off.
It was a long night, but Fred was waiting on the porch this morning. He had a snack and then arranged himself on the same couch I had spent the night on. He did some stretching and yawning and then tucked his chin on top of his murder mittens.

All I can say is Senega and Ammonia, Tim!! What an interesting storm - and a storm of a different sort with the cats.
ReplyDeleteNow that is an interesting read. I don't think we have that here, but if we did, rest assured that Tim wouldn't take it!
DeleteJust another quiet night, hm?
ReplyDeleteGads I hope not!
DeleteWhat a night!! Maybe the just past full moon got into them. Fred and Grady have been out hunting every night for a week, coming home with some impressive wounds. Mutts.
ReplyDeleteAll I know is that my grumpy old self cannot take too many nights like this.
DeleteCoughs are so disruptive, especially at night. My younger daughter is a lot like Tim and it drives me nuts. And it can have serious consequences. (for her at least) Cat fights sound terrible. I never knew that they could make noises like that until I witnessed one.
ReplyDeleteIt sure does wake a person up in a hurry...your feet are working before the brain kicks in.
DeleteThat sounds like an unpleasantly busy night. I do like the phrase murder mittens:)
ReplyDeleteMaybe the lightning was too far away?
How thoughtful of Tim to not take care of himself, so that you can't sleep either.
He does that and is very aggravating.
DeleteThat is curious to have thunder and no lightening.
ReplyDeleteI would have liked to film the scene of you and the cats.
Oh I am sure it would have been quite humorous... especially the part where I shot through the door and found myself doing a little dance of pain when I realized that walking on new gravel is extremely hard on the feet.
DeleteWhen my husband was very sick and coughed for an hour or more. The doctor told me to rub the bottom of his feet with Vicks sauve at night and put his socks on. He hated the smell of Vicks but finally allowed me to try it he said for one night. After he had his socks on for about 20 minutes of less the cough left and he could sleep. He decided getting some rest was better than the smell. The doctor said he did not know why it worked but it did and it did for my husband. He had lung cancer so willing to try whatever. I even researched it on line and it said the same things.
ReplyDeleteHe won't wear socks to bed!
DeleteMy husband would not either until I begged him to just try it until his coughing stopped. He was ok with that. Maybe just rub his feet with the Vicks.
DeletePossibly cloud-to-cloud or within cloud lighting. Probably very high up, out of your line of sight.
ReplyDeleteOff to google in cloud lightning.
DeleteWasn’t that a special night. Can you send the cougher back to your old house? 😇
ReplyDeleteNo...but I have considered options: robitussin or smothering him with a pillow. Both effective. He could choose.
DeleteI hate coughing at night worse than anything. When I had pneumonia, I kept myself awake almost all night. Tim should take something to move this along. Can you grab his nose and pour it down him like dosing a pet?
ReplyDeleteThat made some pretty hysterical mental images...thanks for that.
DeleteTis the season for tom-catting, so to speak. I hate that your rsst was disturbed by their male egos, though.. including Tim's,
ReplyDeletelol! Who do guys refuse to do what will make them well??? Mine is having bad acid reflux issues but will he do what needs to be done? Of course not.
I hope you are both feeling better. Everyone i know who has had this cold/cough has had a hard time getting rid of it. At least you're doing all the right things
I think that is the part that aggravates me the most...he simply won't take anything. I don't understand why.
DeleteThe spare bed is always made up here so any coughing or snoring and off I trot.
ReplyDeleteInteresting discovery about that spare bedroom. In our little house the adjoining rooms have the beds aligned on opposite sides of the same wall. Sound travels. Bedroom furniture needs rearranged.
DeleteIt was a busy night, one way and another. I woke to a cat fight in the early hours - not ours, they were safely tucked up, one on my stomach. Sometimes, it seems it's just all noise and posturing. I hope Tim's cough abates soon.
ReplyDeleteFred seems no worse for wear. I saw Phantom last night and he seemed fine from what I can tell through the window, but I can assure you that not all fights are noise and posture after some expensive vet visits!
DeleteAround here, if one of us is being disturbing to the other, the disturber moves to a different place to sleep. It's simply being thoughtful.
ReplyDeleteIf I hear cats fighting at night, I figure they can work it out themselves.
Now. As to the lightningless thunder- no idea. We can be assured that there was lightning somewhere nearby.
It was really quite a strange thing to witness.
DeleteMake sure Tim's insurance is paid and up-to-date!
ReplyDeleteMen being sick ... 🤦♀️
Lol.
DeleteWell, that's a lot of crazy feline activity! I don't love taking medicine either, but if a cough was keeping me awake I'd certainly do it.
ReplyDeleteI imagine there must have been lightning somewhere, but for whatever reason you couldn't see it. Maybe it was up in the clouds, as you said.
That was a pretty freakish thing to witness!
DeleteHope you are catching up on your sleep by now!
ReplyDeleteI am pretty much over it. Tim will survive too. Sleep will come.
DeleteYou certainly have some nighttime adventures, don't you! Oh Debby I'm so sorry for your guys recovery and poor Tim's incessant coughing... I sure hope you're getting enough rest.
ReplyDeleteI can assure you that I am NOT getting enough sleep.
DeleteYou certainly packed a lot into one evening! The lightning that caused the thunder could have been cloud to cloud, it happens sometimes. I can remember seeing it below me when passing over a line of thunderstorms back in my corporate pilot days. Too bad you couldn't have filmed that cat fight, would have made a great Youtube video! Cheers!
ReplyDeleteYou know, I always wonder about those youtube videos. How on earth do they manage to have their cameras on at just the right moment? I can assure you that grabbing a phone was the last thing I had on my mind. My whole focus was saving myself an enormous vet bill!
DeleteGosh, I hope you guys get over those coughs quickly. What a night you had.
ReplyDeleteI think the reason I look so young in the photo on my blog is that the bandages on my face are covering my wrinkles, especially the exclamation points between my eyes!
Too late for 'quick'.
DeleteDunno woman...you looked like a kid!
Tim's coughing scared the lightning away. If his coughing isn't bothering him, place him out with the cats during the night. Place ear plugs, cotton balls or tissue in your ears so you might be able to sleep, some.
ReplyDeleteHe's being impolite hogging the bed while coughing. He needs to be checked by the doc or the cats.A non-guafenisin cough syrup is great for stopping coughs. A doc can Rx "tessalon pearls". Tim is being cruel to himself and you. Maybe the cats got all upset with the coughing. Try that spare bedroom with ear plugs and lock the door. Good luck. Even my 30-something son and wife change rooms as needed as sleep is so precious for their jobs. Hmmmm: other ideas; don't feed Tim if he refuses to treat his cough. Send him to D.C. to hang out with our never-sleeping alleged president. I'm mean. (I've tried cough drops, which work, but there's the risk of choking on them if you start to sleep.) Linda in Kansas
Tessalonpearls never worked for him previously. I guess the reason his coughing scares me is that a persistent cough is what started the whole cascade of events that lead to his stroke. I am also guessing that is why he so resistant to taking medication for it.
DeleteArt gets coughs because his throat has some malformation according to the ENT. I wonder if that was something that came with age because I don't recall him having this problem before.
