It is snowing again. 25°, which isn't awful but it is still below freezing. It has not risen above freezing for over 3 weeks now. This weekend is supposed to be especially brutal. One night is supposed to be -8°. Once we get through that, though, we will finally get a break. Temperatures in the 30s and even the 40s.
Hallelujah.
It has been quiet here. Locally, anyway. The shit show rages on in the highest echelons, of course.
I feel like I am holding my breath. Liam and his father released. DHS wants to take them back in custody and quickly deport them.
Intake of breath.
There were enough votes to force the Republicans to remove the long term funding of DHS. Once this was off the table, the budget was agreed to, which allowed the end of the government shutdown.
Good news.
DHS only has funding until Feb 13th.
To get a yes vote, there are 10 safeguards being requested to rein in ICE.
Democrats outline demands to Republicans to rein in ICE

Will it hold? Will they cave to pressure? Once again, I am holding my breath.
While there is plenty to cheer:
Minnesota does not disappoint. Bonnie from Minneapolis sent me a beautiful accounting on events. It needs to be copied an pasted here, but I can't seem to be able to do it. I need to get myself to the library. I have not managed this. Hopefully tomorrow when I go to town to protest.
It is a busy weekend: after the protest, I have to get home to make cinnamon rolls. We have a fundraiser Saturday night. Sunday after gym, we are headed out with those cinnamon rolls to have dinner with friends followed by the Superbowl.
(As usual, I cannot possibly be less interested in the game.)
This afternoon was spent chopping 3 quarts of bell peppers. Unbelievably they were $1.99 each which made me quite sure we would be doing without. When I saw a basket of past-their-prime peppers at 2 for a dollar. I snapped of 8 of those for the freezer. I slice some for fajitas and stir fries and chop some for regular cooking.
Milk generally costs $5 a gallon or thereabouts, but since we were in New York state, we stopped and bought milk. Their state subsidizes it, to make it affordable for the poor. It is half the price we pay here. I brought 3 gallons and for the first time in a long time, made homemade yogurt.
I am nervous that ICE will continue and that both parties are too spineless to go against Trump. Or are the Dems just naive? I don't know any more. I'm glad you're getting some warmer weather; it was 57 here today! Full on spring. I'll probably have tulips a month early. Please root for the Seahawks! They are my local team and the owner (Jody Allen) is a good person; she gives a lot to charity and is not a Trump friend whereas Robert Kraft (New England) very much is. Go, Seattle!!
ReplyDeleteI know that the people who care about these sorts of things here are not Patriot fans. They are considered 'cheaters'.
DeleteI don't know why that man standing at the podium was praying but I don't think he understand Jesus Christ, or Christianity, very well. What republicans, what trump, is doing is the opposite of what Jesus preached.
ReplyDeleteWe've had a heat wave here this week, breaking records which is scary.
Stay warm and keep protesting, please.
It just shows how far Christian Nationalusm is from Christianity, doesn't it?
DeleteWhat a Beautiful little music box. It seems too little to have that much music in it.
ReplyDeleteI KNOW! It was so tiny and so perfect.
DeleteAlexa has given us several weather warnings this evening, and our plow guy posted that he would begin his first pass at 4.
ReplyDelete-2 here this morning. It is a miserable day to protest, but we are going for it.
DeleteI am in love with your teeny tiny music box! I am so glad it accidentally came home with you!!!
ReplyDeleteI hate to admit to you, but milk here in my northern corner of Ohio is $2.49 at Aldi, no subsidies that I know of. A friend and I were talking recipes tonight and were listing foods whose prices have doubled. I don't know how moms are managing to feed families.
I cannot understand the cruelty inside someone who would look at a five year old in his little cap and think about jailing him, then sending him to court to defend himself so that you could ship him into an unsafe place. It is like a horror film.
We were hit by a sleet storm tonight. I am getting tired of this weather!
It appears to be a Sankyo key chain music box. I have not found the exact one yet, but there are 3 things about it that lead me to believe that it is one of their earlier versions (circa '50s)
DeleteWarm here and hoping for rain (always hope for a little rain). Gorgeous music box - I can see how it could accidentailly come home. Interesting prayer...
ReplyDelete"Warm..." *sigh of delight*
DeleteHow could you not resist that perfect, pretty little musical box?
ReplyDeleteI don't know, Janice. I do know that I did not fight myself too long on it. One of those dreaded impulse purchases.
DeleteWe have minus 5F here today My dog went out and did the fastest wee ever. I missed you this week, glad you are OK That is a sweet little music box. Our milk is about $5 for 4 litres, or just over a gallon. You do find some good deals. Like you I will not be watching the game, I just hate football. I will be watching the Olympics . Glad that wee boy has been released by your evil baby in charge. He just loves people to suffer. Hell will be too good for him. Gigi
ReplyDeleteThe look on trumps face during that prayer says it all, he could care less. He was almost asleep. Just call him sleepy don. Gigi
ReplyDeleteI have seen that blank look before Gigi. It was on the dementia ward. Totally not kidding about this.
DeleteThat gem of a music box...so tiny. But holds everything good. Music encapsulated in a golden shell, beauty and delight to remind you that even the slightest can be enormous. Like hope. Kris in Ohio
ReplyDeleteTrue. Thank you for your email this morning.
DeleteOf course that tiny music box had to come home with you. It is perfect and I am so glad you found it- a gift from the thrifting gods for sure.
ReplyDeleteNow. As to that prayer- hoo boy. Do you suppose Trump even caught one of the things he was saying which was basically, "Hey God. Save us from this demon, please. Thank you."
I am convinced that he had no clue what Jonathan Jackson was talking about. I think he stood there lost in his own world, swaying back and forth with that blank look on his face.
DeleteThat just happens sometimes when a person is in a thrift shop. Something just speaks to you and you have to bring it home. :)
ReplyDeleteInterestingly enough, when that happens, it often turns out to be a real lucky find.
DeleteI've never seen such a teeny tiny music box. It's lovely!
ReplyDeleteI heard the words, but watched the face watching for a reaction. He had no idea what was being said and how it related to him. Between his narcissism and dementia, he's a lost cause.
The thing that will always aggravate me is that 'this lost cause' is enabled by an awful lot of powerful people.
DeleteTrue. He's a useful idiot for them.
DeleteI would have brought that music box home too.
ReplyDeleteThe awful part is now that I know what it is, there are two other items in that case that I need to go back and take a closer look at.
DeleteI kept waiting for that orange goon to do a face plant off the dais when Jonathon Jackson was speaking, after all he was asleep. It's gonna happen........
ReplyDeleteI don't even think that he was registering what was being said. I think that had he understood, he wouldn't have the self control NOT to react.
DeleteThat was a very impressive prayer -- just subtle enough not to trigger Trump, but explicit enough to deliver a sound message about his leadership.
ReplyDeleteThe music box is a great find. And it's so tiny -- why NOT buy it? It's not like it takes up much room!
This is true. Two other little tiny things in that case would not take very much more space...
DeleteOK, I listened to it again, and Dave listened as well, and neither of us has any idea what the tune might be. At first I thought it was Roy Orbison's "Crying," but it's not.
DeleteI'd have bought that sweet little music box, too.
ReplyDeleteDon't choke: I've paid $5 for a large green pepper in our local Co-op grocery store.
Now if only that praying guy had turned around and punched Assface right in the kisser! How I would have cackled.
-Kate
$5 for a single bell pepper???? I did choke a little.
DeleteWhat a segment little music box! Definitely would have come home wirh me too.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying hard not to let the news suck me down, but it's a struggle. Staying home for the past two weeks has helped.
Enjoy your day tomorrow!
I see a lot of real courage right now. I am trying to balance the 'awful' against that. We stood in 9° weather today. The windchill made it feel like -1°. There were 14 of us and we all agreed on one thing: it was way colder in Minneapolis.
DeleteI am so glad the Olympics are on and giving me something other than the rump to watch the second in comand almost made a US skater miss her start time with his 40 car entourage glad he got booed. I assumed the trump film was a porn movie but I hear it was even worse, just fluff Gigi
