Thanks for the check ins, everyone.
It was a busy time.
My daughter, my son and his wife and children came home. There were two gatherings at the new house. We are not 100% moved in yet, but we had a place for everyone to sit and a place for everyone to sleep, and that was enough.
The first gathering was held at my sister's across the road, a bon fire. The girls got a ride on Libby, and were tickled pink to feed the gentle old horse treats when the ride was over. We sat around the fire and visited, and it was a quiet, fun evening.
The next day, the gathering was at our house and that was nice too. Our new house has memories already.
Monday, William and I rode back with them. It was a full van and a fun trip. On Tuesday, we went to Knoebel's, which was fun. The thrillseekers did the rollercoasters and those sudden drop rides. I, myself, rode the merry go round and the planes with the three year old. It was enough.
We spent all day there. It gave my knee a good test and it held up beautifully.
Wednesday was the great birthday trial run. The girl's birthdays are very close, so the celebrations are combined. The theme this year is 'tie dye'. The kids are going to tie dye shirts. The homemade cake even had a tie dye theme which was very impressive. Three children with three adults to supervise and assist if necessary. We were using the dip method. My son and daughter-in-law decided that was way too messy. Even worse, dye stained hands were being wiped on the clothes they were wearing. The idea of staying on top of 15 kids would be way too crazy. The activity was fine tuned. The color selection was minimized and spray bottles will be used. The cake required no tweaks at all, being impressive to look at and tasting perfect too. William and his uncle fired up the smoker and made bbq'ed ribs and potato salad.
Thursday, we were all ocean bound to a dog beach. This did not happen. Tucker, aka the Golden Land Shark (personally, I call him the Incredible Gulp) gobbled down a washcloth, requiring someone to sit up with him all night. That puppy will be a fine dog if they can get him past the puppy stage.
We spent the day hiking at a local park. Tucker got a chance to paddle around in the water, but it was freshwater. That evening was spent in an authentic Mexican restaurant. I had Poblanos Guadalajara and they were excellent.
Friday was the day that my kids headed off to a child free wedding in Virginia. The wedding was being held at old inn, very grand.
The kids and I had fun. We did a craft. We did puppets. We made dad's favorite cookies. We kept the dog from gobbling down socks, wash cloths and barbie shoes, which was a never ending chore, but one we were ultimately successful at. I did not dare to walk two girls and one large exuberant puppy, so poor Tucker had extra energy that could not be run off in the back yard, as large as that is.
Everyone returned Saturday. William was packed up and ready to head out to Michigan with his other grandparents. I think he is spending the week in Manistee.
The youngest was sick Sunday, and boy, grandma dodged a bullet on that. Only her mama would do. It was a quiet day at home and no one minded at all. I made pepperoni rolls for supper, a childhood favorite. The oldest granddaughter was intrigued to discover she was a 4th generation pepperoni roll fan.
Monday was spent at an amazing playground.
Grandpa Tim rolled in Monday night.
My last full day was Tuesday. We went to an animal park.
All good things must come to an end. Wednesday about lunch time, grandpa and i headed out.
I came home to an amazing sight:
Wonderful times and making of memories. But it does sound very busy!
ReplyDeleteIt surely was busy, but the best kind of busy there is. My oldest granddaughter told her mother that when everyone went back home and it was just them that she wanted to spend a whole day in her room reading and didn't want to come down until dinner was ready!
DeleteAnd now you need a vacation! But not with all the produce, I fear. So glad to hear all is well and fun was had.
ReplyDeleteNo rest for the wicked, I suppose. Fun was had and I was pleased at how well my knee held up. I was hiking on uneven terrain and clambering up creekbanks. It was the ultimate test!
DeleteHow wonderful, memories keep me going some days and you made so many this week, ones that will just give you that warm feeling as you think about them. My kids just came home from Germany and 9 other countries on a driving tour. My son came today to pick up the cat, it was so good to get a hug, and I love you mom. Store those memories up, they come into very good use as time goes by. I know.
ReplyDeleteI do. I gather them all up and hold them safely in my heart.
DeleteGood to see you back here again. What a wonderful time you all had. You are such a very lucky Grandma!
ReplyDeleteYes I am!
DeleteGood times! Welcome back!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jackie!
DeleteWell, that was a whirlwind! Welcome back! The "Incredible Gulp" will require some close monitoring to make it into adulthood, good luck to whoever gets that task.
ReplyDeleteMy son keeps saying, " 'Get a dog, she said. It will be so much fun, she said...' ". But he's taking it pretty much in stride.
DeleteGlad you had a good time! It's fun while it is happening but then it is always a little nice when it is over! Peace and quiet! Are you living in your new home now all of the time? Boy, I bet you are tired!
ReplyDeleteI can't say it feels nice. The house is not yet established, and so everything feels strange and unnatural, and it always seems like whatever I need is at the other house!
DeleteThat sounds like a wonderful time with family. I'm so glad your knee kept up, although not as happy as you are I'm sure. A friend of mine had a dog like that, it was forever eating socks and diapers, and then having explosive diarrhea everywhere. So glad my dogs don't do that.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see your tomatoes. Only two of my tomato plants have done well this year. We had a very strange spring and it shows. No apples either.
Enjoy being home.
He was really straining in the back yard. He had eaten the couch cushion from a playset the girls had received.
DeleteI have green tomatoes everywhere, scores of them. I think I planted sixteen plants, but I'll have to count to be sure. I know that 2 are cherry tomatoes. I have beef steak and San Marzanos as well.
PS We had a frost on the first of June. Killed off most of the blossoms on our apple trees, so no apples for us, either.
DeleteWe missed you! I finally reread your last post and realized you were gone on purpose but then kept wondering if you were delayed somehow. I can be such a worrywart. What great fun with all the kids. Never fear we all kept the home fires burning in your absence.
ReplyDeleteNo delays. I just wanted to be in the moment right where I was.
DeleteWow, what a full on time but sounds great fun. Tucker seems to be a real live wire. When we got a puppy, after just a couple of days, the kids learned very quickly to make sure their bedroom doors were closed and not to leave their trainers discarded in the hall.
ReplyDeleteIt is a hard thing for a six year old and a three year old to consistantly remember. One more thing for the mom list. Their poor mother needs eyes in the the back of her head.
DeleteAnd now, back to those daily reports. 👏😁
ReplyDeleteReporting may be spotty for the next few weeks. The computer is at the old house.
DeleteThat sounds like quite a time, thrills and spills! I've known dogs like that, being operated on to remove all kinds of indigestible things, and never learning! Rocks especially.
ReplyDeleteNever let your dog get near a corn cob. I just spent the week getting my dog treated, $1500. worth. She is small but Vet said if they are big dogs and swallow it whole, surgery is needed to remove it. Still she was very sick. Dogs can not digest cobs. Gigi
DeleteThe dog was scary. I gave the youngest a dish cloth to clean the table while I was trying to put the kitchen to rights. She needed to use the bathroom. I'd just gotten her down the hall and seated when the cry came up from the livingroom. The dog had jumped up on the table, grabbed the dishcloth and was trying to hoik it down before it was taken from him. I literally was pulling the thing from his throat. ARGH!!!!! Never had a dog with that particular behavior before.
DeleteWhat a wonderful time you had with all the family! And to come back to cucumbers and peas and more coming along - those raised beds will serve you well. Then to top it off, a treasure hunt. Be still my heart. Chris from Boise
ReplyDeleteI love that. Too much sweetness for one heart to hold. I've got a wonderful batch of pictures for my refrigerator too.
DeleteGreat to see your raised beds providing fresh vegetables Debby.
ReplyDeleteIt is Dave. I was starting to worry about things, but it is turning out well for a first year garden.
DeleteWonderful family memories.
ReplyDeleteYep. And in the new house too.
DeleteSounds like a wonderful week. Glad you're back with us.
ReplyDeleteIt was a great time with everyone.
DeleteSo good to see you back ... what a great visit you had! That should hold you for awhile! LOL And to come back to fresh veggies ... even better!
ReplyDeleteIt will have to hold me through tomato season, I'm afraid! But what a wonderful time it was.
DeleteOh I do love your produce - and your update. Happy times.
ReplyDeleteI'm quite happy to see everything doing so well too. It's just a first year garden, but I feel like it is a very good start.
DeleteOMGosh! Packed full of fun visit, except for the one sick kiddie...and then you on the way home. That surprise the kids left was the best! :)
ReplyDeleteYou need to rest and recuperate. Priceless new memories.
It was a very action-packed couple of weeks, that's for sure!
DeleteWhat a lovely ending to a very busy time. A different type of busy to what you normally experience.
ReplyDeleteThe first morning back home was very sweet. Finding that orange spider and the treasure hunt. I was weepy.
DeleteShe's b-a-c-k! And boy were you missed! But it sounds like a wonderful time was had by all. Your post reminds me of my life 20 years ago, when all my grands were little. Puppets, crafts, bonfires, sleepovers...what wonderful days they were.
ReplyDeleteThey are so infrequent for me now that William's a teenager. The girls live on the other side of the state. It is my fondest hope to be able to get out there once a month now that a lot of the busy-ness has been cut out of my life.
DeleteThat was a wonderful recap of your time away. It sounds wonderful. I'm amazed at how well the garden is growing. I tried tomatoes - once.
ReplyDeleteI don't think there is anything in this world that takes longer than waiting for green tomatoes to turn red! Honestly to pete. It seems like it has been forever.
DeleteWhat a fabulous adventure!!! From the memories at your new house to traveling to their house, memories made with all the grands, the puppy!, the pepperoni rolls, the pillows. You must be EXHAUSTED but very very happy.
ReplyDeleteThe puppy. OMG. I was more worried about that aspect of it than anything else. He is just so freaking fast! My gosh. I caught him with a wire bread tie. I don't even know where he found that. I got it away from him. He's just very high energy and needs to be kept well exercised. He's actually adorable when he is exhausted.
DeleteWelcome back!! We were getting worried! So glad it was a wonderful visit!
ReplyDeleteSome thoughts about tie dyeing party:
1. The party will be outdoors, right? I shudder to imagine it indoors!!
2. Have guests come in old clothes that don’t matter, and have spare outfits for the ones who didn’t read
3. We’ve used squirt bottles rather than sprays
Absolutely outdoors. When I said spray, I meant squirt. It will all work out. My daughter in law is a party planner extraordinaire.
DeleteGlad to see you back. It sounds wonderful but exhausting the big family meetup.
ReplyDeleteIt was great fun. As someone noted earlier, it was a different kind of busy from my usual busy. I loved it though.
DeleteWow, Debby! What a full and wonderful time spent with family! So glad the house could be filled with good memories from the get-go. I love that for you and Tim.
ReplyDeleteI am grateful for it too, Karla.
DeleteMemories spent with grandson on our boat in Grenada almost 30 years ago when he was only 3 months old give me a laugh when we tell him about them now. My husband had 5 children and loved babies so he gavemy grandson a bath in the sink in the galley, then layed >him out in the cockpit on a towel. We asked why he had not diapered him and he said, boys like being free. This is what my daughter and I came back to after going to town leaving my husband to babysit.
ReplyDeleteLOL. What a fun memory, Gigi! The story that most often is told about my father's first experience babysitting was that I cried a lot. My father's two uncles were there, and they were trying to have a poker game. One of them came up with the notion of adding a bit of whiskey to my bottle. By the time my mother returned, I was sleeping soundly and the game was well and truly underway. She was quite upset back then, but years later, she found it funny.
DeleteLovely memories made and a wonderful garden to come home to. I like the treasure hunt!
ReplyDeleteIt was a sweet thing. They both are wonderful fun.
ReplyDeleteWell, that WAS a busy time! Glad to hear you're still out there and everyone survived all the excitement, even the washcloth-swallowing dog. (!)
ReplyDeleteI like your new pillows and the "treasure hunt" was a great touch. Lots of memories all around.
A whole lot of sweetness. Those pillows were an amazing find. A perfect match!
DeleteI have missed you. Your writing and wisdom is always looked forward
ReplyDeleteto. 🇨🇦
How sweet, Lea. Apropos to absolutely nothing, your name: it gave me a bit of a shock to see it. It is an unusual name. Last month an old family friend died. Her name was Lea. Thank you for commenting.
DeleteWonder if the dog has worms/parasites that are making it desperately hungry?? Orceven maybe some sort of vitamin/mineral deficiency? Is it very skinny?
ReplyDeleteNo. Like almost all puppies, he has been treated for parasites. He's quite a sturdy dog. If his feet are any indication, he is going to be big. He is 4 months old and has tripled in size.
DeleteWere your kids as impressed by the house you guys built as we all are? 😆
ReplyDeleteDee
They liked it. My son can't figure how it looks bigger furnished.
ReplyDeleteWell that sounds the perfect house-into-home transition to me. What a wonderful few days with your family. Glad that the pup survived eating the dish cloth!! And a Treasure Hunt - bless them.
ReplyDeleteThe dog did manage to actually eat a dishcloth while I was there. Two days later, he tried again. He is just so shockingly quick. He really had me afraid that something awful would happen on my watch!
DeleteThe best way to celebrate, all family together!!
ReplyDeleteI agree!
DeleteOMG! You’re moving in already! So much to catch up on with everybody. I feel like I’ve been gone a year.
ReplyDeleteIt feels as if you have been gone a year! Still catching up on your adventures. The Osaka Expo sounds amazing.
