Unsolved Mysteries.

Last night, William set his phone alarm for 4 am. He was very anxious to see the lunar eclipse. I told him to wake me up because I wanted to see it too. Tim decided that he was going to join in as well.

When William came in to wake us up, we were already awake and delighted to see that the best place to view it from was the french doors in our bedroom. We raised the blinds, pulled back the curtains, pushed our bed over in front of the doors and climbed right back into bed to watch the show. William was stretched out at the bottom of the bed with his fuzzy blanket and a pillow,

I had to wake William up 3 or 4 times to see the changes. He couldn't keep his eyes open. He mumbled, "That's neat..." and buried his face in his pillow once again. I woke him one more time when the moon was orange and glowing and then Tim herded him back to bed.

I wasn't even sure if he'd remember anything about it this morning, but he did.

It has been a strange couple of days here.

When William came over Friday night, he was so pleased about Mangey. He named him 'Ash' and spent an evening playing with him. Like any cat, Ash is very intrigued by the 'red dot' and like any kid, William enjoys flashing the laser around and watching the cat pounce. Hours of entertainment. He fed the cat and took pictures of him to send to people. The next morning he got up and fed the cat breakfast.

Haven't seen that cat since.

Where he's gone is a mystery, but cats are mysterious creatures.

Another mystery. I was cleaning the bathroom and going through stuff, cleaning out drawers, throwing old mascaras away, organizing the fingernail clippers back in their box, gathering all the tweezers I never can find back together to get misplaced all over again. Anways, I opened a drawer and found a black hairdryer.

I looked at my black hairdryer hanging on the wall and I looked at the one in my hand. I had a hairdryer burn out on me over the summer. I gingerly plugged this one in. Nope it worked just fine. Did I buy another and forget? Did someone leave it behind? We don't get a lot of overnight guests, really. I have a hair dryer at camp...did I accidently bring it home? (Answer to that: Nope. It is still there.)

I have no idea. Another mystery.

The final mystery really irks me. I have a coffee mug. It is big and it is orange and it fits my hand just perfectly. Ticks all the boxes. I drink one cup of coffee (albeit a big one) a day and this is my go-to mug. Now my morning rut seldom varies. I get up, take a detour to the bathroom to brush my teeth, etc. and then I head to the kitchen for my coffee maker and brew my morning cappuccino. Once that cup is made, I head for the office and the computer to see what everyone is up to. If Tim is on the computer, I sit at the kitchen table with my tablet. Sometimes, I sip my coffee while getting ready for my day, so it might be on the bathroom counter. Occasionally it winds up sitting on the newel post because I was walking from one room to another and got distracted by something and never got back to it. But every day, I gather it up and it gets washed. It goes in the dish drainer. Sometimes it even makes it from the drainer back into the cupboard. (I know, I know. Sometimes I even amaze myself,)

But I got up and reached for my orange cup. It was not in the cupboard. No surprise. I began putting away the dishes in the dish drainer. The cup was not there. I went to the office. I looked at the steamer trunk that serves as an endtable in our livingroom. I looked on the bathroom counter. Not there.

Long story short, I've looked everywhere .obviously not everywhere or I'd have found the blasted thing, but I looked a LOT, I'm telling you. I was working with my plants...did I set it down for a minute? Tim and I had moved a cedar chest that needed to be repacked. Did I take it upstairs? Laundry? Surely I wouldn't have taken my cup to the basement because I would have been carrying the clothes down, but I looked anyway. (My logic was right.)  William and I had given the mudroom a good cleaning, but it was not out here either.

I still have not found my orange mug, and that is the unsolved mystery that bugs me most of all, mostly because my mind cannot deal with that kind of nonsense before I've had my morning coffee. But after diligent investigation, I believe that the cat absconded with my mug. I still can't explain the hairdryer.

  1. Two mysteries then. It is strange, and has happened to me, losing something like an orange cup that should not be easy to lose. Ash must be feeling guilty about taking your cup, hence he hasn't returned. Someone who stayed with us for a few nights asked if we had a hairdryer. I said no, R said yes and apparently we do but neither of us can remember where it came from. We certainly did not buy it. We are guessing that it was his English sister who left it here, but it has an Australian power plug. You do entertain me with the minutiae of your daily life.

  2. When I had Angel he very quickly worked out the red dot came from the "pen" in my hand and he would want to play with that instead, no interest at all in the red dot. Now, Lola also shows no interest in the red dot.

    1. My Paddy loved the red dot. Ash was much more reserved, more curious.

    1. My coffee maker is a small one cup cappuccino maker. I pull it forward to brew, and push it back when I'm done. Nothing behind it but dust.

  4. Wonderful both that you managed to see the eclipse and that William wanted to see it... especially at 4am!

Things turn up when They want to...often when you have decided not to look any more!!

    1. William's always curious about things. I stopped looking for that mug because I know that you are right.

  5. Spent a lot of time looking for lost things for late husband - he never knew where he'd put down tools etc.
So now if I can't find something I blame him!

Hope you find mug and the cat finds it's way home to you

    1. Tim has too many places to stash things. That's his biggest problem.

I can't blame Tim for my mug. I am the only one in the house who drinks coffee!

  6. I think Ash is working things out, the wild is enticing but so is a warm bed and food. William named him well. As for lost things here, they mostly end up in Lillies bedroom, until someone has a great tidy out, which we are in the process of doing.

    1. He probably is. Tim thinks he has another home. I don't because who would watch a cat get mange? TWICE? But maybe they are poor people who cannot afford a vet. I don't know. We shall see what we shall see.

  7. When you eventually find your coffee mug, can you check that my missing pink sock isn't there too?

    1. Yes, if you promise me that if you find your pink sock, you'll look to see if my coffee mug is there!

  8. I miss the days when I needed a hair dryer, haha--anyway I'm sorry to read about Ash (love the name) but that mug!! Crazy!! Your theory about Ash taking off with it is hilarious, but if you don't find it soon... I'll be looking forward to hearing where it turned up :^)

  9. Have you got a Boggart or Leprechaun living in your vicinity Debby? We have them in Ireland and they kick over milk maids buckets and steal things like the top off the toothpaste

    1. That may explain everything...they probably came directly from your house through the computer and are on the loose in this house this very minute. DAMMIT DAVE!

  10. It is annoying when you can't find something and you check everywhere you can think of. But you WILL find it, right where you already checked but there it is in plain sight! You will have to let us know as we will be waiting to hear all about it! :)

  11. My mysteries always end up as your latter story where things disappear. I have yet to experience a mystery involving another object appearing.

  12. Ha! I'm laughing at the image of the cat running away with your mug (and leaving a hair dryer). Be sure to tell us if you solve them mystery!

Incidentally, have you watched the newest incarnation of "Unsolved Mysteries" on Netflix? It's pretty darn good.

    1. I haven't. I saw it advertised though. Thanks for the recommendation. Tim just (finally) got tired of his Turkish series. (after a mere 70+ episodes).

  13. Too funny. It drives me crazy when I can't find things, especially things I just had in my hand, I haven't left the room and I still can't find it. My husband tells me I can start hiding my own easter eggs. I am not amused:)

  14. This post to be continued with solving the mysteries. Good for William to try to watch the eclipse. He will remember it.

    1. He did remember it, at least for the following morning. When my kids were young, we had a solar eclipse. I was very surprised to hear that the school's plans were to close the blinds and keep the children from seeing it. I went to school and picked up my two youngest (the oldest wanted to stay in school!) and we went to the Nature preserve with two paper plates made into a pinhole projector. We sat in the sand dunes, and it was such a special time to me. Imagine my shock, years after the fact that my son said, "I don't know what you're thinking of...I saw nothing. I thought it was stupid." That made me sad. It was my 'momming-done-right' moment.

  15. Having two of something you thought you only had one of just happened to me. Years ago in the 70's when I was married my husband gave me a cloisianne (sp?) pendant of a heart about 1-1/4 inches high with various shades of pink and blue on it. Husband and I have been divorced for over 35 years, but I still wear the pendant as it is quite attractive. A few weeks ago I was riffling through the many drawers of my jewelry box when I saw it in a drawer I normally reserve for other things. When I went to put it back into its usual place, there was already one there! I would not have bought another one because why would I need two? Where did it come from? Granted, the colors on the second one are not as bright as the original but still.....

    2. I haven't shared this with my adult children as I am 81 years old and that just might be the final straw as to where do we park Mom for the rest of her days and do we lock the wheels?

    3. Baha haha! I am sure my kids all discuss the topic in hushed tones.

  16. Here's my latest mystery: On Saturday evening I went around the house setting all the clocks that needed to manually "fall back". I have a clear memory of doing the microwave and the stove. (neither is "smart" enough to change on its own) Sunday morning my husband said, "Do you want me to change the microwave and the stove to the correct time?". They were both back on Daylight Time.

Have you asked Tim about the mug? Could he possibly have knocked it off the newel post and broken it? I hope it turns up (in one piece).

  17. No...he would have told me right away.

  18. Our eclipse was on at a reasonable hour - it was the clouds that prevailed, however... Good luck on finding the coffee cup. I have a large red one, but while I am working from home this week have been using a smaller one and having more tea.

  19. Our son woke their 6 year old daughter to see the eclipse. He explained what it was about and she said "so you're telling me it's in 3D".
I initially read your toenail clippers as clippings and was a tad concerned for a moment.
I hope Mangey brings the mug back soon. As for the dryer, maybe he thought you needed sprucing up as you have done to him.

  20. 3D...that is funny. I hope she remembers that night for always. William will be 15 when it happens again. Hard to imagine.

  22. Cats are indeed inscrutable except at dinner time. Then, they are a open book.

I generally have two cups per morning, but they are cups or pretty small mugs. I usually set up the machine at night, walk into my den in the morning, and push the button. I then do the bathroom thing. While I haven't lost a big mug, someone will find a few memory cards when they clean out my room once I have left the world.
