Suggestions?

 The bone bruise is quite possibly the most painful thing I've ever done to myself. Since the fall was a month ago now, I kept thinking at some point things were going to settle down. They are not. I did some reading and discovered that it can take 2-3 months for a bone bruise to heal.  That was sure discouraging.

I don't think that I am accident prone, but I cannot believe the number of times that I've bumped my knee against something, or bumped something against my knee, or absent mindedly knelt to do something. The pain is just awful. I was loading groceries in the trunk of the car, and lightly bumped my knee against the bumper. The pain was instantaneous and I was leaning against the car with tears in my eyes. People looked at me curiously. Tim stood there waiting for me to get over it. The previous night, he'd come in to find me rolling on the kitchen floor after dropping something, and kneeling to reach under the table to pick it up.

We braved the Black Friday crowd at the Walmart, and got a bottle of glucosamine chondroitin. I didn't know if it could help, but I didn't think it would do any harm.

After four straight days of indigestion, I finally looked up the supplement, and one of the side effects is (you guessed it...) indigestion.

If anyone has any suggestions, I am open to them.

  1. Sorry, no suggestions other than mild painkillers.
    I knelt down recently and the pain from my leg op done last December has lasted for a week!

  2. Don't kneel down!! More seriously, would one of those knee protector thingys that kids wear for skateboarding etc help do you think? Hope it eases soon. I have sympathy, being often in awful pain myself ( especially when I first get up in the morning) with possibly sciatica. 4 physio visits haven't helped at all. Seeing a different one next week!

  3. No suggestions but I took glucosamine chondroitin for a knee problem decades ago on the recommendation of a doctor. I gave up after several months because I noticed no effect other than indigestion more often.

    I have the utmost sympathy for you. I was doing a good deed last Friday and ended up falling out of a pickup into a woodpile tearing my rotator cuff. I have been constantly finding out how often those muscles come into play over the course of a day. That is partly why I am up at dark thirty in the morning reading your blog and typing this response.

  4. Ugh! I can only imagine how much that must hurt. No hints but I hope it heals (relatively) quickly!

  5. Ice your knee several times a day and take ibuprofen as well, on a full stomach, otherwise it will irritate your stomach too. Rest and elevate your leg.

  6. What about a knee brace? At the very least, It will afford some protection and remind you to be very tender with your knee. You can buy one at Walmart for sure. Or a drug store.

  9. Get this thing checked out. It could be more than a bruise ...maybe a break?

  10. Home care
    During the first 24 to 48 hours after the bruising, its important to follow the RICE method to speed healing:

    Rest: This means avoid moving the affected area. If the bruise affects your joints or ligaments, the doctor may prescribe crutches or a supportive sling to use while the injury heals.;
    Ice: Icing the bruised area will help any swelling go down. Apply an ice pack for 10 to 20 minute intervals, three or more times a day to reduce swelling.
    Compress: Using a compression bandage, especially on a joint like the knee, will reduce the swelling and provide support.;
    Elevate: Elevate the affected area above your heart level. This will reduce the blood flow to the area and also work to reduce swelling so the healing process can take place.;
    Alternative therapies
    You may need to wear a brace or walk with crutches to limit movement in the bruised area. This will help speed your healing and ease your pain.

  11. Very sorry to hear this. Have you checked to be sure nothing else is up? I wonder if protecting the knee with an ace bandage padded with cotton or batting might at least avoid the worst bumps.

  12. I would get an appointment with my doctor as soon as possible. An X-Ray or MRI seems warranted here. Good luck.

  13. Bone bruises do take a long time to resolve. :( I wish I had some helpful advice, but I have only sympathy.

  14. Given you had a knee issue even before you damaged it further, perhaps it is worthwhile to get some further investigation done? As you know, factory-produced knees in this house have made a world of difference :D

  15. Might Arnica help? I know it does for "lesser" bruises. I think sometimes we are surprised by how carelessly we move around, do things without thinking, bump into something - only when you have an injury does it make you realize! I hope that you heal soon.

    Ed - hope you are better soon. SO painful. May I pinch your "dark o'clock" expression? It's brilliant!

  16. Ouch! Sounds like a doc should check it to make sure. If all's intact, their advice might be good. Voltaren cream is expensive, but one nurse loves it; it did nothing for me. I've used Arnica gel or roll-on about $7 at WalMart and some drug stores(homeopathic suggested by Cloudia's Comfort Spiral) and it works well. I was surprised Salonpas patches worked so well ($4 for 20 at WalMart.) It takes about 2-3 weeks for glucosamine to provide any difference. Take pills with some food in your stomach first, even just a cracker or two. Linda in Kansas

  17. I take Celebrex, which I am sure you don’t have access to, but the doc also told me to take 2 Tylenol arthritis tablets 3x/day. Maybe they would help you. Might be worth a try.

  18. The RICE comment was spot on. And the ibuprophen, with food. Advice from an old mother.

  19. I can second Bovey Belle's suggestion...Arnica externally where the skin is not broken...otherwise Arnica tablets.
    Bone bruises do take time.

  20. A bag of frozen peas works wonders when placed on where the pain is.
