Exceeded Expectations

I walked over to vote at the courthouse yesterday morning. I really had no hope of making a difference in my county, but I still do it. It seemed busier than usual, which struck me as a good sign. I cast my votes, and walked back home. I'm just so heartily sick of the predictions. I wish the media would stick to broadcasting the news rather than trying to forecast it.  I decided to avoid television, social media and the online reports.

I spent the day cleaning the bedroom. Moving the bed to watch the eclipse had revealed a large herd of dust bunnies quietly breeding under it. (Really, they could have killed us in our sleep).  I set off to do battle with them and am pleased to say that in the end, victory was mine. I spent the rest of the day in the kitchen making beef stroganoff for supper. We were having company.

We watched Jeopardy and when that was over, all stations took up the election reports. I went to bed. I just couldn't bear to listen to any of it.

I slept soundly, secure in the knowledge I was safe from dust bunnies.

The world looked much brighter today.
We have a new governor. By 9:30 we had a new senator.
Oz conceded and went back to New Jersey.

Tim and I were very happy.

I said, "It just feels like we stepped back from a precipice."

Tim said, "I know it. This could have been very bad."

I've been experimenting with my bread recipe. I make a nice rustic wheat bread, good and dense, perfect for soups, but I've been unhappy with my soft white bread recipes. I studied more recipes online, and picked one, and lo...what I pulled out of the oven looked very promising. Tim walked in the door and I cut him a piece. "Mmmmm..this is perfect!" he said,

I also found my orange mug. Somebody (who shall remain nameless) had been cleaning and did a bit of rearranging. I had plunked it down on a side table. It was behind a picture on a table that it is never set on.

Some days go just a bit better than you expected, don't they?

    1. I had a chocolate cake out in the kitchen. I never thought of it.

  3. One advantage of wall to wall carpet is no dust bunnies grouping up. The dust stays flat and static and just remains as such for however many years. Poor Ash was falsely accused or mug theft.

    1. Probably his raging at the unfairness of being falsely accused is what keeps him gone.

  4. Yes, news should be just that. Opinions can change matters, whereas facts are just that.
Glad that the orange mug decided to be found!!

    1. For the weeks leading up to things, we heard nothing, NOTHING except how bad everything looked for the Democrats. Sweeping Republican wins were predicted. I had a feeling that it simply COULDN'T go like that, but I'm not an expert. It started making me feel anxious. I quit checking the polls, I stayed away from the news for the most part. What I found interesting was as soon as the 'sweeping Republican wins' did not happen as predicted, new predictions started again. How would a sweeping blue change affect the country, the republican party, etc. etc. Report what IS, not what might be. If I want the future told, I will go visit a fortune teller.

  6. I would guess most people feel as if their vote is hopeless in making a change but added up, eventually they do make a difference.

I never thought I would hear you say something negative about the media. I thought of you many times as I sat up watching the results come in. (I'm a glutton for punishment evidently.) I didn't have a horse in your race but Oz left a bad taste in my mouth just because he was an outsider. Our U.S. Representative, whom I never cared for, got shuffled with another incumbent in the rejiggering they did to our districts due to losing a Representative due to population. Rather than face the other incumbent, she moved to a new district she thought she could win in. She was right. She did win. The one that stayed lost. Weird how those things work.

I'm pretty happy with the overall. I have always preferred a mixed Congress/President scenario. I think that is when we as a country do our best work. It isn't much ever but it is full of compromise and always seems to last beyond future administrations.

    1. It is not the first time that I've made this criticism. Report the news, don't predict it. That is an entirely different thing from claiming that the media is corrupt or an enemy of the people.

The partisan politics of the last decade disproves your last statement.

    2. Oh I don't think they are corrupt or an enemy. I just think they over sensationalize things for viewership. They don't have our best interests at heart some of the time.

It doesn't happen often but it does happen. The Civil Right Acts of 1964, the Man On the Moon Act of 1969, Endangered Species Act of 1973, American Disabilities Act of 1990, McCain-Feingold Act of 2002, JOBS Act of 2012, CURES Act of 2016 and perhaps my very favorite, the Great Compromise of 1787 have all passed under wide partisan support and I have think done well. But to your point, only one of those falls within the last decade. Hopefully we'll get our act together and do something else as good with bipartisan support.

    3. That should have read "all passed under wide bipartisan support", not partisan.

  7. Well I'm glad you found the mug! And of course I'm happy about the Pennsylvania results. The jury's still out on some other races but my fingers are crossed.

    1. Mastriano was a scary, scary lunatic. Just the fact that he had the support he did concerns me. 2 out of every 5 voters thought he was great. Let him crawl back under a rock. We need to be done with this QANON nonsense, and I'm sick of hearing about the stolen election. How much money have we spent investigating something and not turning up a damn thing. And this ceaseless hammering away that the media cannot be trusted bothers me a lot too. Time to close the book on this bullshit.

  8. Glad your orange mug was found. I predicted you would find it and you did so some times predictions are right! I agree with you about all of the pre-vote chattering. I think they were actually trying to scare people so they would vote and it kinda of worked, I guess. Thank goodness the results are not as bad as they could have been! :)

  10. Your elections are complicated. I'm going to have to take a few lessons and find out how it works.

    1. Well, it would be a much more sensible operation if only we cast our votes and it registered one vote for each person. Unfortunately, my county will always vote red, and my blue vote will be in the minority. In the end, there were enough blue districts to carry the state.

  11. Hooray for the bedroom victories!!! I actually "know" a New Jersey Democrat who is now a councilor in her town, thanks to yesterday's votes.

  13. I am pleased the elections weren't as dire as predicted. Like other non- Americans (and maybe even some Americans!) I cannot work out your voting system. I thought ours was bad. Whatever happened to one vote, one person, one candidate?

    1. It would be a great deal simpler. We need to get rid of the electoral college. Our own Ash Khare was one of trump's fraudulent electors.

  14. I did much of the same on Election Day and woke up to find mostly good news. Glad you guys sent Dr. Oz packing. Congrats on finding your mug and not escaping the wrath of the dreadful dust bunnies.
