I know someone, an ordinary sort of woman, just like me, except for one thing: she is very much into designer clothing, jewelry, that sort of thing. I am not saying that this is a bad thing. It's her thing. It is just not a lifestyle that I understand.
I know that she is regularly on the local on line market place selling her boots and shoes. They seem like nice things, but I have a pair of boots. I have enough shoes. It's just not something I pay attention to, but she's always got something for sale. She alway has them in their boxes. She advertises them as slightly worn, and that look (to my untrained eye) as if they've never been worn at all.
Over the weekend, she posted yet again. This time, she's getting rid of 33 of her purses, all designer, Coach, Michael Kors, Louis Vuitton, Dooney and Bourke...more names that I can't remember or don't recognize and I'm too lazy to go back and look at her post.
But....33 purses! And that's what she's getting rid of...I wonder how many she's keeping? Can you imagine the size of her closet??!
I don't understand that, the need to acquire let alone acquiring to an extreme like that, only to shed the excess and begin the process of acquisition all over again.
Question:
Answer:
It says that I like a sturdy bag that will hold up a long long time
because I'm going to carry the darn thing until it falls apart.
We're supposed to have more than one purse? I have a black one and it goes everywhere with me. I see no need for more than that one--which isn't designer at all but does the job.
ReplyDeleteEvidently. The news came as a shock to me as well.
DeleteWell I shall call my one and only a handbag. Co-ordination in clothes and owning of lots of stuff passed me by. Though to be truthful I would like a small body bag because delving in my large bag sends me crazy.
ReplyDeleteHandbag sounds much posher, doesn't it? Sadly, I only have a purse.
DeleteI'm wondering if she is one of many that go to thrift shops and snap up barely worn fashions for very few $$$, then sell them online for a huge markup price. It's happening here in Australia, with some making so much money they are able (according to the newspaper article) to quit their day jobs.
ReplyDeletePerhaps that is it. She wears a lot of what she buys. Perhaps this is how she justifies the expense...that she can buy these things and then turn around and resell them. That makes sense.
DeleteI own two bags, both small cross body for hands free convenience. One is nylon and with many zipped compartments therefore waterproof and practical. The second is leather and only used for "best". I no longer need a conventional big bag and certainly would not waste money on one with a designer label.
ReplyDeleteI once got a tiny purse. It didn't work for me. I have a regular sized purse and picked myself up a hot pink wallet big enough to hold my cell phone. The purse usually hangs on a door knob, and I just grab the clutch out of it when I need to run some place.
DeleteI like to carry a small rucksack on my back especially when I do lots of walking in the summer. Best of all I am hands free to use my phone and carry my hiking stick.
ReplyDeleteDo you have different rucksacks to coordinate with your outfits? I also have a ruck sack. It is basic black. It is my all occasion ruck sack. I can team it with casual outfits or dress it up for a glamorous night on the town.
DeleteAgree. It's baffling to me. When you realize someone in your own town lives in a completely different world than you do.
ReplyDeleteI guess that that part doesn't surprise me. There's a whole lot of people that live in a different world than me. I am happy in my own world. It's just the idea of anyone wanting to acquire such a pile of stuff.
DeleteI have several purses, maybe eight or ten. I like to change out when the seasons change. Some were gifts from family, most I have gotten at thrift stores or consignement shops for pennies on the dollar. They don't cause any harm, I have the storage space and like the variety. That being said, there is not a designer purse in the lot.
ReplyDeleteThere really is no harm in it at all. It's a choice, really. I have one purse. More often than not, I reach into it, grab my clutch (which is hot pink, for a reason), and go. When I travel, I take the whole thing. The only thing that I can think of is all the times that I've wandered the parking lot looking for a vehicle only to realize that I drove a different one. If I had different purses, I'd never know what I was looking for!
DeleteDifferent strokes for different folks, as they say. Isn't it great that we don't all have to be the same? I can have my one purse and she can have many and we can both be happy. It is good that she resells what she doesn't want to use anymore. Recycling!
ReplyDeleteMany women are into the designer bag thing. That part doesn't shock me at all. What shocks me is the sheer quantity of them. I collect keywound antique clocks. I love them. I love the ticking. I love the chiming. My collection stopped at abruptly at 8. It just became silly to have so many. I'm not immune to the 'desire to acquire' but 33 purses kind of astounded me. Of course, it could be as River said, above.
DeleteI know a few people like that in my life. I am not one of those people. I would rather save my money for experiences than to surround myself with things.
ReplyDeleteDitto, Ed. There are so many things to see and do in this old world. Accessorizing does not top my list.
DeleteI have two purses, one for everyday and one evening bag which sadly never gets used anymore. I want a purse that is practical, lots of room, zippered compartments and handles that fit on a wheelchair. Done. I don't get 33 purses. What a waste of money.
ReplyDeleteOh, so many of my own tribe here, speaking ma language!
DeleteFor a lot of people, shopping is a hobby. And I suppose getting rid of stuff then becomes a hobby too!
ReplyDeleteInteresting take on it, but I would bet there is some amount of truth to that. It never occurred to me.
DeleteA little bit of obsession going on here.
ReplyDeleteTiny bit...
DeleteSue has various purses etc that she has accumulated over the years, but she keeps them forever. She coordinates to some degree for different outfits and seasons. I can't remember when she purchased her last purse/bag.
ReplyDeleteI am not (and never will be) that organized.
DeleteMaybe she only buys to resell...
ReplyDeleteThat's not the only reason because she wears the things as well, but River did bring that point up above. It had not occurred to me,. but I agreed that it is possible that she loves nice things but knows there is a market for them as well.
DeleteI too am baffled. I have one that I use all the time. My problem is that when it is time for that one to retire (a) I have to go and find a new one and (b) I have to dispose of the old one. My daughters despair that I do nothing in the name of fashion.
ReplyDeleteAnd do you find yourself looking to buy the same purse because you loved the old one so much?
DeleteThe op shop doesn't run to same same, but often features that I liked in previous are on top of my "what I want" list
DeleteMy purses are always used, but I favor ones with a couple zipper compartments and 'sack' style. I have to be able to toss them over a shoulder.
DeleteI have one pair of shoes to wear out in public, one backpack, one wallet...I guess men aren't good examples of apparel excess.
ReplyDeleteTim has hats...lots and lots of hats.
DeleteSummer handbag and winter handbag. Although of late I just carry everything in a tote sort of thing so I can chuck my knitting bag in. I did go a bit crazy with on-line shoe shopping during lockdown but they are bright and crazy and make people smile.
ReplyDeleteIf you are going to go crazy, make sure that you make every one around you smile.
