Probably not Covid

I am not sick. I am not well. It's a strange thing, and in these strange times, it is hard to know what to do with yourself in this situation. So. I stay away from people. The good news is that it is probably NOT covid. William was diagnosed with the flu today, type A. Whatever that means.

I wouldn't have thought that I had caught covid so quickly from our tenant, Deb. But erring on the side of caution, we will stay away from people (Tim did not go to church on Sunday), and wait to see what happens next. If it gets no worse, I see no reason to test. I will keep on with the ibuprofen.

Today we loaded up the dump truck with a load of firewood, brought it home and stacked it. I texted Deb, the tenant with covid, and asked if she needed a porch drop. She said, "A half gallon of 2% milk," which was easy enough since her house is four doors down from where we were working. I ran it to her porch (along with a raspberry filled doughnut that came along for the ride). We talked, her from her door in her bathrobe, me standing in the front yard. Her symptoms are mild, and she's just handling everything with otc analgesics and happily reading books. I imagine that it is a nice respite from working so hard. She's also been under a bit of stress. Her daughter, Piper, is also on her 7th or 8th trip into Poland to provide humanitarian aid in Ukraine.

After the wood, there were little odd jobs aplenty to keep me busy. I worked on my house plants. Brought the geraniums in from the concrete urns for the winter. My sister wintered them for me last year and they did beautifully. She tells me that anyone can do it. I'm not so sure about that, since I have routinely killed my poor wintering geraniums for years now. These ones are the perfect color of red and I love them, and I will feel quite bad if they die over the winter.

I scrubbed the bathroom floor, washed cleaned the kitchen after lunch, and made a southern window sill beautiful with bottles, bits of colored glass, and  plant cuttings.

I haven't seen my cats around, and I've been worried about them. A few nights back, pulling out of the driveway, Ginger was in the front yard. I tried to call him to be fed. He did not come.

I'm reading Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed. That girl can cut through the crap, I'll tell you. I have two more books on their way. 'Your Second Life Begins When You Realize You Only Have One,' It is not the poem but a book by Raphaelle Giordano. The other book is 'Passing On', by Penelope Lively.

The sick people at my son's house are all on the mend, and life there is returning to normal.

All is well in my corner of the world.

  1. I'm glad you're not sick. Everytime I gotten sick in the past 2.5 years I've thought, covid, but it has yet to happen thankfully. Resting in bed and reading like your tenant sounds nice actually. Take care and hope you don't get sick.

  2. If you are on ,Medicare or over 55 I think you can get the tests free for covid. I ask at the pharmacy, and they gave me 4 to use. Have not had to use them yet as I have not been sick. Glad you are not feeling too sick.

    1. The thing that confuses me about the home tests is that my daughter-in-law was giving them to my son and to the oldest girl. Everyone was testing negative. Until they went to the doctor's and tested positive. I'm not convinced that the home tests are accurate.

    2. I think you are right about that. I did it three times before surgery, 2 neg 1 pos. The hospital took my 2 and did the surgery. I live near a retirement area, so the older people use them regular. I think it makes them feel better.

Staying in and reading like your tenant sounds pretty OK to me!

  4. Every time I feel unwell now my first thought is usually .. Covid? However, most people I know in my circle of family and friends have had it and all have been mild. I haven't caught it yet though. Too unsociable probably.

  5. I'm sneezing because Matilda my grand daughter left behind her cold this weekend. It must affect a lot of households trying to work out whether you have got Covid or not. And I suppose as the virus mutates you can get different versions over time. Luckily it seems to be getting milder.

    1. I'm just sticking to common sense isolation and social distance. Whatever it is, I am trying not to share. I am perfectly happy sticking near to home for a while.

  6. I hope you feel better soon. I would test just to be sure, but that's me and I'm not you.

    1. That's an interesting thought. Please don't think I'm being argumentative, but why would you test? I'm truly curious to know. Anyone else that things that we should test, please weigh in. It is no problem to pick up a couple home tests and we are not unwilling to do so. We just don't see what it would change.

  8. Type A simply means that it is the type of flu that causes pandemics and the flu has been pretty active lately around here so I'm not surprised. There has also been another bug going around here too that gives the kids mild fevers and headaches and the adults more cold like symptoms. I'm getting tired of all this crap being passed around all the time and just want a period of nothing but I suppose that is wishful thinking.

    1. Yeah. It's gotten old here, as well. You being the spouse of a doctor, please weigh in on the 'to test or not to test' question. I really am curious to get everyone's take on this. We are not getting a lot of guidance on the topic. Since I live where I do, people would likely ridicule and ignore it anyway.

    2. I did respond in your newest post but in the context of above, I will add that my wife would probably say to test always so that it can be tracked by statistics and if things take a turn for the worse, you have more information to speed up treatment versus on waiting for a PCR test which in a hospital setting may still take a full day to get results back. She told me to test a couple times when I had it and I eventually did for the reason mentioned in my comment on your latest post.

  9. You are awfully busy for someone that hasn't felt well. I usually spoil myself when I am under the weather - napping and reading with my pajamas on! :) Hope you all feel better soon!

    1. If I was truly sick, I'd be inclined to do the same. I guess I have a dose of "Flu-Lite".

  10. The doctors/nurses in my family all recommend the home tests. When I had covid, the one I took at home showed a strong positive (and was verified by another rapid test two days later at the hospital). To each their own, though...

  11. Raspberry filled doughnuts are the best thing for treating covid. You are a gem.

  12. One Thanksgiving about forty years ago, I got sick. My recollection of that holiday is curled up in my recliner. I have no recollection of ever going to bed. People came and went over the week, and I just stayed sick. Every germ in the universe circulated in my veins that week. Then for the next forty years I was healthy! Not even a cold. And now I've caught it again.

  13. Bravo for taking care of your tenant! And bravo for her daughter, getting involved in humanitarian work. That's pretty impressive.

I overwinter our geraniums in the house -- just bring them in, pot and all, and then prune them back in the spring when I put them back outside.
