Enough Already.

 Differences of Opinion

(Wendy Cope)

He tells her that the world is flat ~

He knows the facts and that is that.

In altercations fierce and long,

She tries her best to prove him wrong.

But he has learned to argue well

He calls her arguments unsound

And often asks her not to yell.

She cannot win, he stands his ground.

The planet goes on being round.

I guess that is where I am at right now. We have 9 more days until election day. I am so sick of the advertising. I don't think that a governmental body should spend our money to influence to fight against the the other party candidate in an elecion that is bound to decide control of that governmental body. We are bombarded with advertising right now. Television ads coming one right after another. Mailers arriving virtually every day. Phone call after phone call, bogus 'surveys' mostly. Recent phone call (female voice) "Hello. I was wondering if you would mind answering a few questions for our survey." Me (having heard this nonsense so many times) "What candidate are you calling for?" Long pause: "Well...I just have some questions..." Me: "I'm trying to cut to the chase here. You have no questions for me. You just want to offer me information on your candidate. Who are you representing?" Long pause. She told me. I responded, "Now there, I've saved us both a great deal of time because no matter how hard you talk, I'm not voting for him."

I  am taking a cue from John. I have given up the news at this point.

I know what I know, and I don't need the last minute hysteria.

However, a good laugh is never wrong.

  1. You cannot make politics up. What I hate is having to learn what really goes on in some people's minds. We have had one politician's death in 2016 - Jo Cox in a similar vein. The latest attack in America is horrific. Paul Pelosi took the blow intended for his wife, again a woman.

    1. Plus a more recent Tory politician killed. Regardless of political views, this should not happen. For a Tory, he didn't seem like a bad bloke.

    2. That's some scary stuff. And even with the Pelosi incident, you STILL have radical right wing nut jobs threatening politicians they perceive as enemies. They are bold, and becoming bolder.

  2. The badge is good. Now what about bear personal hygiene classes?
I am not sure we receive such calls purporting to be a survey. We do get recorded calls by politicians but only to our landline. We have a State election soon and no calls yet.

  3. AMEN! Fortunately living in a rural part of flyover country and watching everything taped on a DVR, I don't get exposed to a lot of campaigning. I still get some via the evening news but it is in measured doses. I had one person that actually knocked on my front door that wanted to "ask me some questions." I just told them to give me their literature so I could dispose of it properly and leave me alone, which they did good naturedly.

I am curious as to your comment that a government body is using money to influence the fight against another party's candidate. I'm not sure what you are referring too. Are you referring to the current president being used to campaign for people and we are paying for his protection and travel? I wouldn't have guessed this which is why I am confused.

  4. I don’t know how you can stand it. We have laws here that limit election spending, which I think helps a lot. We also have a short period for electioneering once the writ is dropped. I think it is 30 days.

    1. I can't stand it. We're watching a lot of Netflix these days, and I am flat out not watching the news.

  5. I voted already so now all I can do is cross my fingers and wait. The political mail I get is awful and of course goes right into the recycling bin. What a waste of paper! I can't believe any voter would be swayed by the vitriolic crap that is being printed.

  6. I like the poem. The sentiment behind it feels very, very familiar to me.

    1. Sadly, it almost seems like a poem for our time, doesn't it.

  7. Many ways have been devised to contact us whether we want it or not. We must remain in the game or the flat earth idiots will rule.

    1. I'm in the game, for dead sure. But I don't have to listen to their bullshit.

  8. I gotta say, one huge advantage of being a U.S. citizen living overseas is being able to participate in elections without being subjected to all that endless advertising. I don't think a political ad EVER changed my mind.

    1. At this point, everything is so polarized that it is pointless to watch an ad without fact checking.

    1. Gz, I hadn't meant to publish. I reverted it to draft, and prepublished it as I meant to do. It will appear tomorrow on her birthday.

  10. We get phone calls here. Hubby gets great pleasure in "debating" with the poor bugger on the other end as his research is two sided unlike the one-sided arguments they try to tout.

    1. I have a friend who has made a game of it. She debates with them until they hang up on her. While it makes me laugh to think of it, the fact is, I haven't got enough hours in the day (or the interest) in keeping myself tied up on the phone.

  12. Interesting that here on Oahu, I feel like there was more campaigning during the primaries. I see some commercials now but I would think most people who are planning to vote already have. However, even here in Hawaii, we have a segment of the population that doesn't trust mail-in voting. They prefer standing in line and doing it the hard way.
