Bugs, bucks, bread and trees

My daughter-in-law is very good about keeping me in the loop. The baby tested positive for RSV and Covid. She seems to be getting better. Today I received the message that their eldest has now tested positive for Covid. My son is still sick. Thank goodness that my daughter in law is well enough to keep that ship afloat. There is no way for me to be helpful. I know it. It does not stop me from wishing that I could.

Tim got up early and went hunting. It was not a good morning for it. It was blustery, and the wary deer tend lie low and not move because they cannot hear danger in all the rustling and wind noise. I got a message at 9 that he had not seen one tail. Disappointing for him, but it is very early and the rut doesn't seem to have started just yet.

I spent a lot of time in the kitchen today. I was looking forward to my bread making day. The dough did not rise, which was very disappointing, The only sensible thing to do was to roll it out into a pizza crust for supper. I checked my yeast. It was not outdated. This is puzzling to me.

The tree guy came to take down a dead tree that Tim's been worrying about at one of the rentals. Now that the tree is down, we'll have work for a couple days cutting up and stacking firewood. for the wood burner. A cheerful fire crackling in behind the glass of the woodburner makes winter a bit brighter.

Tim has gotten up to episode 54 of Resurrection. Only 404 more episodes to go. Oy.

  1. I didn't know that about deer dodging hunters when it's windy. Linda in Kansas

    1. They just don't move around a lot. They lay low, waiting patiently in the brush. The hunter is waiting patiently too, in his stand or his blind...and never the twain shall meet. Tim went out for a couple walks but did not manage to scare anything up. He wound up leaving early, but did sneak out to a different place in the evening. He scared up three walking in, but he wasn't prepared. If he cannot shoot clean, he doesn't shoot at all, but he knows where he's going this morning first thing.

  2. Are you sure you got the yeast and water measurements correct? Covid is still bubbling along although here, with many less numbers. I must be hard to not be able to help your son and DiL. At least they seem to be coping.

    1. They are coping. Our county is one of the seven counties in the 'red' zone. Still, compared to the early days of covid, the numbers are low. I really don't think that I screwed up the recipe. The last time I made bread, the yeast did not seem to be working as well as I'd have expected, so I added an extra packet of yeast. It worked out fine. I probably was not paying as close attention as I should have been.

  3. For some reason, I often have problems with yeast that like yours, isn't outdated. Because when I go buy some more that is fresher and it works, I assume something about how we store it or the humidity or something about our house, causes it to go bad faster than predicted. I generally have better luck with bottled yeast versus the packaged yeast for longevity. But the flip side is the bottled yeast is a larger quantity so I probably waste more in the long run.

    1. I store mine in the fridge. I always have, but I did make up my mind to buy jarred yeast next time, and to buy from a different store. This is the first time that it didn't raise, but the last time it wasn't working like I thought it should, so I added an extra yeast packet. I probably should have paid more attention this time and done the same. In the winter, when I'm not working, I do a lot more baking.

  6. To be more alliterative you could change trees to bushes in the title. It might not be as accurate, but I think it would be satisfying. 😇

    1. AC, it DID occur to me, believe it or not. I was just too tired to give it great thought.

  7. or she could go all poetic - Bucks, bugs, bread and shrubs? Yeah, you need the trees. I am having to bite the bullet and get myself some fresher yeast, as I went the opposite of everyone during lockdowns and stopped baking there for a while!

  8. I'm glad you're staying away from COVID. https://abc7chicago.com/covid-long-haul-study-aging-faster-after-organs-kidney/12340213/
I just heard how having long COVID too often can make your organs age faster. Sheesh!
I'm glad you got your bread making done successfully later.

  9. I have never caught it. Either has Tim. My son has had it twice and actually may or may not have it right now. It's such a random thing. My sister has never had it and she's a nurse. She also refuses to vaccinate. I'm curious about why we seem to be immune, knock wood.
