The Find

I had to go to Goodwill today. I feed the cats from little china bowls. Lest you think this is some sort of pretentious behavior, allow me to explain. I wanted them to have bowls that were different from anything in my kitchen. No confusion. I feed the cats, I wash the bowls and they get set out in the mudroom for the next hungry cat. You can go to Goodwill and pick up four mismatched china bowls for 39 cents (Pro-tip: Buy the color tag that is the week's discount. The cats don't care, and neither do I really.)

Anyways.

The cats are fed at the edge of the driveway, and sometimes before I get back out there to collect the bowls, Tim heads off. He has a tendency to cut corners a lot closer than I do, and so, from time to time, a china bowl meets its sad end beneath the tire of a dump truck or whatever the heck he happens to be driving. Two of them bit the dust in this two week period.

Time to replace them. I was headed to the grocery store for onions and passing by the Goodwill. Those bowls popped in my head, and it was still discount day, so I decided to pop in and see what I could get. I had a little stash of sale priced bowls at my chosen 39 cent limit already in my cart, when I saw them, a set of four melamine bows for 99 cents. It was like getting  two free, so I put my china bowls back and got those little set of bowls while wondering how melamine holds up to being run over by the dump truck. I imagine that I'll be finding out. Stay tuned.

Anyways, I was looking at kids clothes because...well...because I am practical...because my oldest grandaughter needs a winter coat...alright, dammit, I have no self control. Anyways, it paid off in spades for me today. Isn't this the dearest little coat you've ever seen? It's pink and black houndstooth which doesn't really show up in the picture.) And it shows no sign of having even been worn.

And I am sure that this coat cost way more than $5.39 that when it was bought.

  1. I don't think melamine will hold up much better than China to a direct hit. The bowls might even blow away, or into the path of an approaching wheel.
I really should look at clothes in op shops.

    1. I expect you're right, but the price was right as well. Feeble attempt at humor.

You really should. I'm not a name brand shopper as far as that goes. I look for well made clothing in good condition, and there is an awful lot of it.

  2. You have such good luck at your goodwill stores. I used to get good bargains back in the day at our op shops but now people flog the good stuff on marketplace and the like and the op shop volunteers snag the rare nice things that get donated (or so I have been told by an op shop volunteer).

    1. I'm surprised that this is allowed. The policy in the store I frequent is that the item needs to be on the shelf for a week (tags are color coded) before an employee can buy it.

  3. Our thrift stores are too crowded for me to navigate any more.

  4. Really nice coat! Uh, can you put the bowls in the street to the side of the driveway? In the grass, without ants getting to them before the cats, or hubby? That's nice of you to feed them. You even set them a 5-star restaurant table. Linda in Kansas

    1. The driveway curves behind the house. I feed them from the back door. Tim has two trucks and a car parked back there and it is tight. He is always maneuvering a vehicle around so it doesn't matter where the bowl goes. I only feed them if I see them. Food does not sit out. That would be a problem.

  5. The bowls, that little coat.. I wish so much my mom was still here and could've known you. She loved this kind of stuff with a real passion.

  6. That is a very good deal and practical too. I buy Jack's winter jacket, pants and boots too. I imagine your granddaughter will love the jacket. I would have when I was a little girl.

    1. I try to keep my eyes open for things like that. I can always find what I am looking for. William is in middle School now and very choosey. We can buy those brand names that are so important, at a fraction of the price. Kids usually outgrow their clothes before wearing them out.

  7. No bargains for grandma. It's great how you think of your granddaughter and the puddy cats before yourself Debby. Unconditional love I suppose?

    1. Oh I think of myself. I guess at my age there is not a lot that I want or need.

  8. Perhaps some concrete planters used as bowls might hold up to a dump truck.

    1. I have two concrete planters that used to get knocked off the side porch fairly regularly. He no usually manages to miss them.😒

  9. That DOES look like a great little coat. As for the Melamine, I imagine it will react pretty much like china when it's run over!

  10. You’re being a good grandma — to the cats too, if you care to put it like that, and I do. 😸

    1. LOL. I like to think of it as being a good steward. I think that when you are confronted by a need, you are being given an opportunity to make a difference.

  11. The logic behind your bowl choices for the cats makes perfect sense to me. After all, who knows where all their little mouths have been. We have a wide assortment of dog bowls in our carport. Fortunately they aren't in a spot they can get run over.

  12. Wow! That sounds like an awesome Goodwill. We have a sort-of Goodwill-like store here, but the prices were not that great.

    1. I use the goodwill as my first attempt to get something when I need it, and I am very Lucy in that most of the time I find what I need and avoid buying new. I also browse there regularly. I find pretty cool stuff. I got a four foot tall wrought iron obelisque for $2.99. It was green, but I spray painted it black.
