Google

Every Sunday morning, I sit down with a cup of coffee and write a letter to Cara and Colin. It is a quiet little ritual that I have really come to enjoy.

They've made a lot of changes to their home, and it has been fun to watch the garden take shape, new carpets going down, new furniture coming in one piece at a time. There's always something going on there.

I wondered if I could see the new plantings at the front of their house, so I google mapped their address, and saw the little road that I walked to go downtown and explore the little shops. I wandered up the cul-de-sac that led to their front door. It did not show their changes, but when I glanced at the date I saw that it was March 2022.

I arrived at their house at the end of February, and stayed for all of March. As silly as it sounds, it tickles me to look at the google map and the pictures of their house, their car parked in the front yard, and mull the idea in my mind that it is quite possible that I was actually inside their house as the picture was taken.

  1. Google Street View is a magical thing. I've often thought the same as I've looked at old street view images of our family home, which we have since sold. Who was home when those pictures were taken?

    1. Someone once said that they googled their home and found that it had captured a picture of their deceased pet staring straight at the camera in an interested way. They were very happy for that memory.

  2. Wonderful memories and it is fun to just let your mind run on and let the memories come to life as you think. I can do that with our 3 trips to Germany and seeing my kids and the country side. It is always good since my husband is in those memories.

    1. It was very nice to 'walk' up the road towards there house again. It made me smile.

    1. It's strangely comforting to me to be able to be able to walk up to their front door. Seeing your daughter, even for a whole month, after three years of NOT seeing her is tough.

  4. 3D and 2D images are all very well, but none give you the knowledge gathered when you have physically been somewhere. You were there, and when you are looking at Street View now, you understand exactly what you are seeing.

    1. You are right. I doubt that it would have meant nearly as much to me if I had not been able to remember mailing my postcards from that particular red mailbox, or remembering that I'd sat on that exact bench and watched a father and a son playing.

  5. Google and other wizardry can be blamed for a lot of things but Maps entertain me for hours and bring me such joy as I revisit old places and explore new ones that I will never get to see in the flesh.

    1. It is really nice to be able to go back to places I've been. My sister and I looked at our childhood home. She had no memory of it. I remembered her coming to that house from the hospital on Christmas eve, and she was in a big red stocking.

A Better Day

First of all, I want to thank every single person who recommended 'Puckoon'. Oh my gosh. It has been a long time since I laughed so...
