Better yet!

It was a working day, and that was okay. Tomorrow we're laying the carpets.

A cool thing happened. Mangey came back. He brought a friend. I decided not to give him a second dose of medication. He really does not seem to need it. He had improved so much after a week. 24 hours later, he's improving still. I was so happy, I gave both of them tuna fish to celebrate.

  1. How cool. What does the medicine bottle say to do? That may be the best in the long run, especially if he missed a dose one time. And his friend might be susceptible. They must be talking about you and your wonderful help! Linda in Kansas

    1. That's the tricky part. I read a lot on this. Ivermectin is recommended, but you cannot buy it OTC in cat strength, most likely because it has some pretty horrible side effects in case of an overdose. I ended up buying a product for cattle, and doing math to get the right dose for a cat. The label doesn't give any recommendations for a cat. Reading online, I can give a second dose after a week. I'm kind of an 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' kind of gal. He doesn't seem to need the medication, but I will keep an eye on him and his buddy. But I can't even tell you how happy I am to see such amazing results, because I was quite worried about giving it to him in the first place. Because the disease is very contagious once a cat gets it, I just felt like it was the right thing to do for the population at large.

    1. Well, maybe I'll just call him Stinker. What is amazing to me is that he looked pretty bad when I saw him, and reading about this, I expected that it would take a month or so to see improvement. I never expected to see such a dramatically fast recovery. I'm really, really so happy to see him looking so much better. His hair is growing back on his head.

    1. LOL. This is funny, because when I saw him last night, he was at such an angle that I couldn't see his head and back. I didn't think it was him. But he came right over when I spoke to him, and looking, I could see the damage on his back and head. But it really is so much better. Reading further, I discovered that how fast they heal, in large part, depends on their health before the mites. He is a young cat who appeared healthy in all other respects.

  4. Two weeks later and Mangey's dozen or so siblings will be congregating outside your house. Grub time! We always go in for capture and neutering as well ;)

    1. I've always fed whoever shows up. I don't believe that we have a TNR program here. I went on line and asked several cat people. It appears that whatever is being done is done on a individual, volunteer, (read:Unpaid) basis.

  5. When I was a kid, our cats always disappeared. Then one morning I happened to have reason to be at the neighbor lady's house just as she was setting out a bowl of half and half cream and saw many of our former house cats join the mass of cats lapping it up.

The moral of this story is that cats will go where they get fed the best so if you keep sitting out tuna, be prepared for more of Mangey's friends showing up.

  6. That was a celebration meal. There is no 'keep' in the putting out tuna department. I also don't just keep the food bowl filled outside. That would attract a lot of unwanted characters of the rodent variety. When there is a cat outside, I have a small bowl that I take out to them with cat food in it. When we had cats 'disappearing', it was invariably coyotes.

  8. The school where my daughter teaches has a special day at the end of the year with competitions and a great time had by all. Teachers have been taking kids out to their parents car all year ( car rider ones) or to the bus... a good time of the day! So this generation of kids will have memories.. maybe not the same ones, but good ones just the same.... btw, considering Missouri's summertime temps, air conditioning is better than open doors!!
