Tomatoes

You know that tomato that I bought last week? The one I paid 53 cents for and was shocked?

Well, as previously noted, I quit cooking at lunch time. It's just too rushed to come home, clean up, cook lunch, eat, clean up and then head back out the door. So now we have sandwiches. Last week, it was roast beef with swiss cheese, and a good crunchy layer of lettuce. Tim hates tomatoes, I love them, so I top my sandwich with a slice of tomato. He puts catsup on his sandwich. I use mayo liberally coated with fresh black pepper.

Last week's sandwiches were good enough that Tim wanted roast beef and swiss cheese again. I picked up the makings, some nice wheat bread, and found myself standing in front of the tomatoes once again.

You know my 53 cent tomato from last week? Using a slice a day on my sandwich, that tomato did last me a week. A dime a day. That's not such a big deal, is it?

Except they've gone up 40 cents a pound. IN ONE WEEK. This week's tomato cost $1.01.

It was a bit of a jolt, but in the end, I decided that I'm worth it.

I cannot wait for tomatoes from the garden.

    1. I'm a bit on the cheap side. You probably would not have figured that out about me.

  2. Home grown tomatoes are the best -- even have flavor!

  3. Hope it's tasty! I used to put so much money in the ground trying to grow decent tomatoes, I finally figured they were cheaper to buy from the store. Linda in Kansas

    1. On it's on, it probably isn't all that tasty, but a slice on a sandwich is nice.

  4. I don't mind paying a lot for produce as long as it tastes good. I wasn't going to grow tomatoes this year but your latest posts are making me re-think that.

    1. I'd have to have tomatoes in a pot if I didn't have a garden.

  5. For a tomato fix, it's worth it. But just think how that garden tomato will taste!

  6. Oh My Goodness - What a price! I'm not sure about exchange rates but it sounds a lot! That's frightening and puzzling when surely there must be parts of the States where they can grow all year round?

    1. I did think so. Especially to have the price go up 40 cents a pound in one week. Just one week.

  9. Shop bought tomatoes here are usually bland and tasteless. We used to grow our own in our previous garden's greenhouse but not sure we have enough space here. We shall see.

  10. Lunches are light and cold here, sometimes just crackers with cheese plans and apple and probably celery. Where are you coming home from?

  11. We have been working in a couple of apartments down the street from our house. One is finished and the keys are in the hand of our newest tenant. The other, we are slaving away at. I used to think that my least favorite thing was taking down old suspended ceilings. I know think my least favorite thing is putting up new drywall on a ceiling.

  13. I, too, am anxious for tomatoes to be ready. It's staying so cold here in Missouri lately, down in the 40's at night, which my five tomato plants do not appreciate. They need some coats or something. At this rate, they won't be ready to eat until August.

  14. I can hardly bring myself to buy a tomato at the store. They just don't taste as good as home grown. (except maybe grape tomatoes) I've not planted any yet and it's getting late.... -Kelly

    1. You're right. They taste no where as good as home grown but they are a nice addition to a sandwich. A home grown tomato would be an even better addition though.

    2. The big tomato fields are being picked here now. I see semi loads going through town to the packing house and piles of seconds in cow fields for them to eat.

  15. That's why when we find a farm shop, we get what we can there...not many around here though. Not for fruit and veges
