Fishing

A nice weekend. I went to a community yard sale with an Amish friend. Probably 3 times, she said, "I really like this. I don't suppose we can fit it in your car."

Yes. Yes we can.

It did get to the point where I had to call Tim to bring the truck, before it was all said and done, but that was okay too, because I had found some barnboard sheeting that I knew that he'd want. (I was right, too.) The sheeting is normally nearly $30 a sheet, and this person was selling 3 sheets of it for $30. I called Tim on to tell him. He was dropping William off at an activity, but came right over in the truck.

While I was waiting, I listened to two old guys talking about the price of lumber. It IS high, and it has been high for months now. The pandemic squeezed production at the same time that storms and natural disasters ramped up demand. It hasn't evened out yet, and it looks like demand is going to continue to be high this summer. The two old experts blamed it all on "Biden's war".

It's the first time that I heard anyone calling it that

He and William spent the day fishing. They had gone Friday night to a fishing hole that Tim suddenly remembered from when he was a kid. They hiked out to it and discovered that no one else had discovered it. What a hot spot it was!

They went to the same place Saturday, and it was even hotter. They caught a half dozen rainbow trout, which were released, but what an exciting day! All of them were at least 12 inches long. and put up some amount of resistance. Tim snagged one that jumped out of the water twice, which tickled William to bits.

It is more fun for Tim this year, because William baits his own hook now, and casts without help. One of William's fishing stories from last night: "I casted my line out, but it wasn't a good cast, so I started to reel it in, but there was a tug on my line. I caught another fish! I couldn't even believe it. It was not a good cast!"

This means that Tim is actually able to get some fishing time in himself instead of babysitting an up-and-coming fisherman. Neither one of them could stop talking about their three fishing trips. Later that night in bed, Tim was still talking about how excited William got. I listened in the dark and smiled, because I know that William was not the only excited one.

"Could you ever have imagined bringing your grandson to your childhood fishing hole after all these years?"

"Nope," he said, contentedly.

It felt good to take the weekend off. We've been hitting it hard, but making good progress. Tomorrow we will get back to it, but tonight there is a thunderstorm and I'm sitting in the dark listening to the rumbling thunder.

Nice.

  1. It sounds like retirement is keeping you busy. What is Biden's war? The Ukrainian war?

That's nice that your grandson and husband got to enjoy time together.

    1. Yep. They felt that this was Biden's fault.

    3. It doesn't have to make sense, gz. As long as they can say it in voices dripping disgust, it is enough for them.

  2. I don't understand this alternate view of reality and the untruths that are successfully peddled to these people. The situation makes me despair. What a wonderful fishing trip! It sounds like it was rewarding and fun for both parties.

  3. I am back, new FB, e mail and all new bank numbers. Thanks for warning me about the hack. My computer was very old so my son said it would be very hard to clean everything out and I did need a new one, so I have a brand new HP computer. Trying to get used to all the new updates from a 13 year old one to this one. Great fishing story.

    1. Ellie, I've been thinking of you and wondering how you made out. My gosh. It sounds like a trial. I am glad to see you. But let me assure you that it is not just you having difficulty with commenting. Blogger has switched something up and everyone is having difficulties.

  6. They were both very happy campers. The story of the bad cast that caught a fish was told over and over again.

  8. Great to work with a neighbour, helping each other and yourselves.
The fishing trip...a beautiful thing, making memories and passing old ones on. You are so fortunate to see William often enough x

  9. Biden's War? I have no idea. Must be the Ukraine. The US has certainly spent a lot on that.

Timber is very highly priced here too. Builders are complaining they can't get it, and when they can it is expensive, and they have contracted firm prices for a home build.

Grandpa and grandson fishing together makes for a nice mental picture.

    1. It's the Ukraine. Silly me. It has nothing to do with Russian aggression, or holding a line.

It has been expensive here for quite some time.

  10. Going fishing anymore for me has little fishing involved. I need to go myself and relive my youth!

  12. They were marveled over and released. Not quite as harrowing as being fried up and slapped on a plate.

  13. Your fish story is terrific! Reminds me of all the times my Dad took my kids out to fish. He loved fishing and I am glad that my middle son has got that love of fishing that my Dad had and is now teaching his own son!

  15. I'm glad the fish got thrown back. We had a comedy programme with two fishing older men. It was what you would call 'slow.' Fishing does that for you, slows you down to contemplate the world around you. Good for Tim and William.

    1. To be honest, Tim used to bring the fish home. No matter how I cooked them, people would be picking at them. No one seemed to actually like eating them. It was my decree that has gotten us to the catch and release phase. I got tired of cooking meals that no one ate.

  16. I didn't discover the joys of fishing until I was an adult. Every morning that I walk by the pond I tell myself it's time to get started! Maybe this week. :D -Kelly

    1. Tim taught himself to fish as a kid. There was no one to teach him. He loves it. He is really happy to pass that along to our William.

  17. I was introduced to the pleasures of fishing, learning to cast, having to bait my own hook when I was young. We ate most of what we caught. Fishing wasn't part of my life as an adult as just never had the opportunity or had a partner who fished but I could enjoy it. Sounds like a wonderful experience for your husband and grandson.

    1. One day we will reach that point, I think, of eating what we've caught.

  18. I must admit I never got the fishing gene, despite the fact that I grew up on a lake. I'm just not that patient -- especially if the fish gets released at the end! (I am in favor of catch-and-release, though.)

    1. We actually have a large pool created by beaver dams at the retirement property. Tim takes the fish and puts them in there to have a quiet life and do what fish do (which is to (hopefully) make more fish.
