Bless the Beasts

The black feral cat that comes around regularly to be fed has developed mange, poor thing.

Glad to have vet people in the family. I hope that there is a treatment for him. He's been keeping a distance.

  1. If a black cat walks across your path it's supposed to be lucky. I am sure the vet people will cure the feral cat mange.

    1. hope so, Dave. It is kind of hard to treat an animal that you cannot catch.

  3. Poor thing. I hope humans can't catch it too?

  4. Ugh. Mange. Some of the foxes in London have it too -- a variety called sarcoptic mange that apparently can kill them. But I would think mange in a pet would be treatable and probably nowhere near that severe.

    1. It can kill any animal. We had to have a bear euthanized for that. It's a mite. It completes it's life cycle under the skin, and multiplies. Pets usually receive treatment early on. Feral animals are harder to treat simply because getting the medicine IN them is tricky. There are topicals, but getting them ON them is trickier yet.

  5. Years ago my vet told me cats cannot catch mange; their skin is impervious to the mange bug. They can pull out their hair if it is matted and annoying.

    1. So many sad stories in the world, AC. This is one I can maybe do something about. We will see.

  7. Good luck helping the miserable kitty. Hope your vet family team can catch it and get him better, neutered, and maybe put him back out in the world. Some shelters work really hard to help find homes for them. Yep, my son's a vet. Linda in Kansas

  8. Oh Linda. If I catch him and get him/her treated and fixed, I doubt that I would be able to turn him back to the world. If he had a mind to stay, I would let him.
