Over Dramatic

Last night, I was folding the week's laundry on the couch. The television was on. Tim was watching America's Funniest Home Videos.

Well.

He would have been, except that he wasn't watching television.

He had been watching the Steelers play. Then he switched over to watch the Bills game long enough to be assured that they were going to win. Then he switched to the evening news.

After a bit of that, he just wandered off to the office to look around the internet for a while.

Me? I was folding the laundry. I could have changed the channel, but it didn't really matter because I wasn't really paying all that much attention.

(...and the remote control was over on his couch...)

And as I was just about finished folding, the television announced that it was "interrupting regularly scheduled programming for a special news bulletin".

"Uh oh," I thought.

Tim came shooting out of the office.

A very somber broadcaster broke the news to us. Bob Saget died, the very first host of the programming we were currently watching. They repeated it yet again. "Bob Saget found dead in an Orlando hotel room at age 65," We were then told that we were being returned to regularly scheduled programming.

"For God's sake," I said. Tim shook his head and laughed.

I get that he was a television personality and will be remembered fondly, but...

A special news bulletin? For that?

  1. Soup sounds good. I have been contemplating making one for family dinner soon. I only make 2 — sweet potato and cauliflower. They’re both excellent.

  2. Indeed!

I thought you were going to mention the special news bulletin was to inform about the Brooklyn flat block fire. All those added on ugly external fire escapes in New York, and still so many were trapped and died.

  3. No special bulletin about that, Andrew. 9 children. Truly heart breaking.

I make an awful lot of soups, AC. It's a wonderful way to get the fridge cleaned out. Special favorites are cream of potato and butter nut squash soup.

  4. Well at least you have found the lost shower curtain. Stay with that and don't worry about foolish news. The New York deaths are tragic.

  5. Any death is sad...I taught school with his sister, who was lovely. His whole family moved out to LA after he did....his sister died from Scleroderma and his other sister died young also of an aneurysm...they always broadcast when known people die. Way better than a football game any day....! Our tv broke so it’s been football free bliss all weekend...

  6. I honestly can't think of the last time I was watching television and it was interrupted for breaking news. Weather yes, but not breaking news. These days it is just scrolled across the bottom of the screen with more details at (insert time here.)

I only found out about Sagat this morning. I guess I'm calloused as my first thought was a drug overdose. Hopefully is was something more natural.

  7. I really think that the last time that I saw it used was in the announcement of the Ahmaud Arbery verdicts. They cut away to a reporter at the scene to report it live. The same thing happened when the Derek Chauvin verdict was announced.

While the media typically reports on the death of known public officials, it is something you see reported during news breaks.

  8. Sometimes it's all a game between the different media groups as to who can report any type of news first, after confirming it's accuracy. Football equals money. They'll disturb it as little as possible. Linda in Kansas

  9. Yeah, that does seem odd. If you were STILL tuned in to "America's Funniest Home Videos" then I could understand it, maybe!

  10. I'm pretty sure all three of the major news networks (ABC, NBC, CBS) open their broadcast each evening with those words. "Breaking News!!!" It always makes me think about the little boy who cried "wolf".

  11. I suspect that the last time our programmes were interrupted was when President Kennedy was assassinated.

  12. The media is always looking for a drama to big up. I once went two years without watching or reading any news at all - I often think I ought to do that again.
