Just Curious

I was getting hammered by that annoying Ratana, and I was removing comments from him multiple times a day, so I enabled the comment moderation.

The interesting thing is that the spam comments simply stopped.

Now if spam comments can be stopped by that, it seems like there should be some feature which weeds them out without the moderation, don't you think? Why can't you just block specific commenters? Anybody understand how this works?

Updates: I am happy with my decision. The hard part was actually making the decision. When the logical thing is at odds with what I want, I struggle a bit. But next Friday, I'll be retired. The following week, 'Ama and her magic pineapple bag are headed east for a week.

I have not yet found my missing shower curtain. This is NOT a logical thing and it is darned annoying. It has to rank right up there with one of the craziest things that has ever happened to me.

  1. I agree. I wish I could block spam but can't seem to work out how. Not that I have to wade through too many comments!
I wholeheartedly support your decision to not take the extension (not that my opinion matters a dot!) I made the choice to stop work and it was the best one I ever made. Unless it makes you happy or genuinely is required to put food on the table then, as we get older, it shouldn't even have to be a choice.

  2. I found that just identifying Rantana as spam led to Google doing the same, at least some of the time. I just check comments a few times a day, and it's not all that hard to click the spam button a few times if I need to.

  3. Congratulations on your impending retirement!

Re the shower curtain, could it have fallen down behind your laundry equipment?

  4. I am sure Ratana is a she, sitting in a miserable little room in Phnom Penh typing away twenty hours a day for not much money. She was allowed some time off over Christmas and New Year though, even though it is a Buddhist country. I have comment moderation on for posts older than two days and that catches her out at times. It seems she has realised this now though. I don't think there is anything you can do about in the way of blocking her. Blogger must be aware of her international activity.

Anyway, must dash. Ratty is due to make contact any minute now.

  5. Come to think about it, Ratana hasn't visited me for a while. Maybe I shouldn't say that or he'll come right back. congratulations on your retirement. I'll bet that you find some more things to do that are much more satisfying than your old job.

  6. So happy for you! (I just read your previous post and this one.) Go celebrate by buying yourself a new shower curtain! :-)

Is that a spring in your step I detect?! CONGRATULATIONS!

  7. Had to laugh out loud about the missing shower curtain. Maybe your soon-to-be supervisor did something with it. Linda in Kansas

  9. Ratana is such a pain. I did wonder about your comment moderation. Hope he/she/it has disappeared for good.

  10. I think Ratana's comments are made manually and individually. What a boring pastime!
I bumped into an ex-colleague in town a few years ago, by then retired. "I can thoroughly recommend it" he said. And my view now? I can thoroughly recommend it.

  11. AC, I ticked Ratana as spam for a couple weeks, each and every comment. It almost seemed to exacerbate the problem. As in, I could remove a comment and note it as spam, but another comment would be there in an hour. Almost as if there actually was a person in Phnom Penh watching the blog, actually. But I suppose that I shouldn't have said anything. I just got a comment from 'Derl' wanting to talk about how his marriage was so bad his wife take him to the divorce court. That's as far as I got before deleting. I think the key to retirement is to keep your days full. We've still got a house to finish before putting it on the market. Then we've got our own house to build on the retirement property. I do think we'll be busy for the first couple years at least. My husband watched an episode of Mountain Men. Eustace has built himself a wood burning truck. Tim is fascinated by that. His mind will stay busy.

  12. We have the mystery of the missing trousers belonging to my husband! They vanished a year ago and still haven't turned up a house move later! They must be with the lettuce that disappeared without trace from our vegetable drawer.

  13. Have you bought a new curtain yet? You won't find the lost one until you do.

  14. I had forgotten all about Ratana. I hope she stays away for awhile.

Enjoy your retirement and expanded Grandma time.

  16. Are you sure you had three shower curtains? Maybe you only had 2 to begin with but you thought it was a pile of three when it was really only a pile of 2? That would be something I might do! :)
So glad you are making your trip soon!

  17. Wow, you just made my day. I thought I was the only poor soul being pestered by Ratana. Now seeing these comments I feel much better knowing others are sharing my frustration. Its become a game for me now trying to speculate just when Ratana is going to leave a spam comment hoping I’ll be right there when it shows so I can instantly delete if before his/her eyes. Seeing your rash of comments on my blog I thought you were another Ratana. Happily I investigated before pushing the SPAM button on Debby. Thank you for visiting.

  18. Nope. I read a few of your posts sometime ago and managed to lose you. I came across you over at Red's. I have spent a couple hours reading about a happy soul. Thanks for checking in!

  19. I just mark the Trolls and Bots as Spam and they go away, but many Bloggers have used Moderation successfully too, I've just never done it, but know it's an option to block annoyances. Missing Shower Curtain... did you perhaps accidentally fold it up as a Sheet? I did that once with a Fabric Shower Curtain and found it in my laundered Sheet pile. Congrats on Retirement and have a Safe Trip.

  20. Ratana is absolutely annoying! It actually showed up as a Follower and I had to search and search how to remove it. Then Ratty disappeared for a while and I thought YAY! But then it started up again. I kept marking and marking it as SPAM and it hasn't worked. Arrrghhh!
