On New Year's eve, man hit a 15 year old girl and killed her. He was driving a commercial car hauler. He did not stop, but it was witnessed and he was caught before he got out of town. To make matters worse, he was inebriated.
Awful, no doubt about it.
I think it is awful that a guy with a drug and drinking history is even able to legally drive a semi truck.
I think it's awful that a child died before she ever saw 2022.
It's awful for the parents.
I also think it is awful that people think that this excuses the most perverted, awful comments about the guy on line. I wonder at the minds who think up things like that, type them, and hit 'publish'. I wonder about all the people who feel compelled to 'like' comments like that and to add their own hateful remarks.
It's not that I don't have my own thoughts on the guy. I do, and trust me, they are awful thoughts.
I just don't get spewing forth. I feel as if it would make me awful too.
Comments are largely a vile thing. I avoid them most of the time, and when I don't it is both saddening and maddening.
ReplyDeleteWhat a horrible story. But yes...I'm continually amazed at the things people will say online. The NYT has a story about anger in our society and how the littlest things are prompting people to blow their stack. I think a lot of it comes from Internet culture, where people feel emboldened to be awful to each other, and then they carry that attitude over into their daily lives.

I haven't seen this and hope I don't, but I will say that from what you say here that if he gets a prison sentence then it's justified.
ReplyDeleteI would not disagree, Tasker.
ReplyDeleteThere are always tragedies like this at Christmas simply because selfish people think they are entitled to break the law.
ReplyDeleteI am proud to say that I have a backspace key and I am not afraid to use it.
ReplyDeleteSome people need to employ a filter - how terrible for the family of the girl.
So sad to read this. The young lady was just going into her new year probably with a lot of dreams. Sorry for her family.
ReplyDeleteI was glad to see you back today, Mark. I lost most of December myself. Easy to do.
ReplyDeleteI am not unknown on the WWW and what mystifies me is that after twenty five years I simply do not come across this kind of thing online. Do people search it out or do they know dubious people who forward things on, or maybe choose to follow such extreme people. I don't want to know haters, in real life or online.
ReplyDeleteI see it on facebook regularly, on public sites.
ReplyDeleteThe anonymity of the keyboard. Even on innocuous posts people will appear to spew venom and hate. We have spawned a bullying culture and it is sickening.
ReplyDeleteShould truck drivers have to prove they are clean and sober before they get behind the wheel? We had a tragedy here where 4 police officers were killed by a truckie high on something.
I think that when a 'truckie' has a history of drug arrest, he should not have a cdl (a license to drive heavy trucks in US). He should have to prove sobriety by monthly drug tests, hair follicle (which will show drug use within the last 30 days).
ReplyDeleteWhat a tragedy! Sorry to hear this.
ReplyDeleteWe are living in a "me" culture where what other people think of your actions aren't even a consideration.
ReplyDeleteMy mother always said if I can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. This is a tragic story, all around.
ReplyDeleteSome people can be very nasty and cannot see boundaries when they are behind a computer screen.
ReplyDeleteYou are 100% correct. I agree with you totally.
