Millie

I was working and listening to a podcast when suddenly I heard a loud wail, followed by sobbing. Startled, I turned around. The guy behind me was surrounded by people and he was crying hard.

I kind of knew, in my heart, but I waited quietly, holding my earbud in my hand.

My co-worker was taken off life support.

At lunch time, another friend, looking at her phone, said, "Debby? She's gone."

We sat quietly, teary eyed.

Suddenly, with great emotion, the woman blurted out, "I don't understand the anti-vax people. I never will. The statistics don't lie. She died because she didn't get the shot. People just need to shut up and get the damn shot." She collected her garbage in a rush and headed for the trash can.

Not one person argued.

At random times this day, I found myself crying over something that suddenly popped into my head. I would stop to wipe my eyes. I didn't feel self conscious about it because I was not the only one.

  1. How terribly sad for you all. I hope Air Quotes felt duly contrite but I doubt it.

  2. I'm so sorry. I don't understand anti-vaxxers either. Or people who think the pandemic is a hoax. Or it's my right. Yes, it is your right to die but it's not your right to make me sick while you're doing it. And now another wave is starting. Fucking hell.

  3. That's so sad about your coworker. It's really unfortunate that folks won't get vaccinated. Even with this event, people will still have misinformed "reasons" to not get vaccinated. Their choice is one thing, but it affects others and the hospitals. I've been a hospice nurse: covid is not the way to exit this world, unable to breath, placed on your stomach to help the lungs take their last inhalations. It's spread by hanging in the air for 3 hours or more, and is a hidden, evil disease. Take care of yourself. Get any boosters offered, stay masked up everywhere but home. Require anyone entering your home to wear a mask; have paper ones ready for them. Linda in Kansas

  4. I don't think even the antivaxxers understand the anti-vaxxers.

  5. I just don't understand the people who think this is all some way of the government controlling us, how do they believe that when real people are dying.

  6. And the sad thing is that the people who are dying and not vaccinated are telling us to get vaccinated for gods sake. Freedom cannot be equated with the right to infect others to die, we are a society and need to care for each other.

  7. No tears from the eye ball rolling and pantomime bloke. Which world politician said, 'Just like a bit of 'flu'? I hope it is only 10% of the world is so stupid about Covid and not 20%.

Is it true Covid is cutting swathes through the Trump supporting and unvaccinated states?

  8. The strangest thing? The sobbing? It was 'air quotes'. He really cried his head off.

  9. Awful and avoidable. And Air Quotes reaction! Seeking consolation? Seems it is all about him. Unfortunately, we can't choose our colleagues.

  10. Maybe it was the realization, finally, of what a fool he's been.
    Let us hope.
    I'm sorry, Debby.
The death of a co-worker and friend is never easy, no matter what it's from.

  12. Sad when tings happen that could be prevented.

  13. I'm so sorry.

Our small, local hospital is at capacity with 10 severe Covid cases--eight never vaccinated; two vaxed, but not yet had boosters and are immunocompromised.

  14. So sorry to hear about your colleague. Perhaps it will bring home reality to your other co worker? Take care, it's hard hard times just now. x

  15. I'm sorry. In the situation at my daughter's office, the one who died was regretting her decision once she got seriously ill. What I don't understand is that her anti-vax coworkers still stood by their choice, even after her death. Some folks will never be convinced.

Gosh I wish people were smarter.

  17. I'm sorry to hear it. And interesting that "Air Quotes" was so upset. Maybe this will be the shock he needs to re-think the whole Covid situation.

  18. I hope Steve is right.
Sorry for the loss of your coworker. A working group becomes almost a family sometimes

  19. I don't understand either and I'm losing any sympathy/empathy over it lately.

  20. Oh gosh! Oh gosh! It's sad and aggravating. I have one friend who has refused to get the vaccine too. She's been OK. I hope she stays that way. Hawaii is having a horrible COVID surge right now. It's darn scary.
