Shocked

Our newest tenants came to us under pretty tough circumstances. He has terminal cancer. He was so very concerned about making sure that his wife was taken care of once he was gone, and that tenderness was really touching to see. Over and over, he matter of factly stressed that everything was to be in her name because he wasn't going to be here long.

She stopped in to settle up with rent, and sign the lease. She looked tired. Moving is a hard job. Caregiving is a hard job, but she's a plucky little thing.

It was shocking to that she'd been hospitalized.

More shocking to hear that she'd been transported to a big hospital.

Absolutely stunned to find out that she has died.

Her husband told Tim about it on the phone.

  1. So sad….hopefully he had a moment to say goodbye…..but somehow I don’t think it worked out that way.

  2. Often when a partner is very ill, the spouse drives himself/herself hard and ignores issues or can take no time for self-care. The stress is enormous. What a very tragic event for a couple who were already dealing with so much.

  5. Oh wow. I clearly remember the story about them. We just never know what is around the corner, especially when we are older.

  6. What a tragic story. Something similar happened to an ex-boss of mine.

  7. That is terrible - something similar happened to a friend's parents.

  8. Will he be able to live on his own in your rental?

  9. Lynn, he's firm on staying put, and we will help him as much as we can. He has two sisters who live nearby, and his wife's daughter lives across the creek. We will all work together to make his last days as comfortable as possible. It's not hard to make an extra helping of dinner.

  12. OMG. I remember I had a patient with cancer one a few years ago and her girlfriend has just died. She said, "It was supposed to be me."

    Poor man.

  15. How tragic but, as others have said, not uncommon in these circumstances. He is lucky to have you to help out and keep an eye on him.

  17. Just when you think you have life figured out, it tosses a big old curveball at you. My thoughts and prayers go out to your tenant.

  18. Oh Wow thats so sad.
    What did she die from?
Is he going to be able to cope alone?
I have often found that the care giver gets ill themselves once their loved one has passed away so I am quite surprised that she has gone first. The poor man must be devastated

A Better Day

First of all, I want to thank every single person who recommended 'Puckoon'. Oh my gosh. It has been a long time since I laughed so...
