I despair

A group of local parents have taken up the fight against the mask mandate in schools. They plan to sue the school district to prevent this.

I don't understand it. I really don't understand it at all. Our William wears a mask to school, even before the mandate kicked in. It just seemed prudent to do so since covid cases were once again on the rise. He is only 10 and cannot be vaccinated and the delta variant does affect children. He's a sensible kid. His mother explained why he was wearing a mask when others did not. It made sense to him, and he does it without complaint.

The mandate kicked in the second week of school and the fit hit the shan. A friend posted her thoughts on it, decrying the uproar. She felt that kids were learning to view the schools and the authorities in them with distrust.

My point is simple. Our schools are in enough trouble financially, and now we're going to spend precious money on legal battles?

One mother's outraged response was that masks do nothing, and her daughter complains that they give her a headache.

I responded that the masks DO work, not just for covid but for all flus and colds and their related complications as well. That's documented.

It slipped quickly into "that's not what I'm reading," as if her faithbased sources are more reliable than science.

In any other disease you can name, treatments have changed over the years as we learn more about the disease process itself. Take breast cancer for instance. New discoveries led to changes in treatment and these breakthroughs are lauded and reported in the news. We can now even predict who is at risk for the disease, something that is important for my own children (my son is at a higher risk for reproductive cancer as well.)

Yet this is never the case with covid. Every new discovery is greeted as proof of government conspiracy and every change in treatment is seen as evidence of ineptitude.

Tomorrow night, we will receive a phone call to let us know whether we have computers and are returning to work. Tuesday morning, we were also told that masks were once again mandatory. I'm not arguing. Last week the girl at the desk in front of me tested positive for covid.

  1. "that's not what I'm reading,"

I bet that's absolutely true. People decide what they want to think and read accordingly if they read at all, that is.

  2. Exactly Anvilcloud.
Schools were back two weeks in Scotland...and surprise surprise we have a spike in infections....

  3. The thing that really annoys me is that the self same people who are fighting this with big guns are the same people who cannot handle homeschooling their kids. Why then, would you challenge the very safeguards being put in place to prevent that?

  4. Because we're vaccinated it's likely that if we catch covid it might just be like bad flu (unplesant enough), but what does concern me is the possibility of having some long-covid condition. They are not understood. Even children can have them.

  5. It is all still so unpredictable I am just taking whatever sensible precautions I can. What I don't understand is why does it have to be so confrontational all the time.

  6. Over here you can drink and dance in a nightclub until two in the morning without a mask but you have to wear a mask to go in a supermarket.

  7. After having lost a Great-Grandchild to COVID last February in 2020 I knew Children were always at risk to get really Sick from this, have serious Complications and even Die horribly just like some Adults are. It has made me angry ever since COVID began that so many Adults are acting as tho' Children will be immune naturally and okay, since if even one precious Child isn't and suffers a tragic outcome, that's unacceptable. Keeping Children Safe in Public School, or even Private School, is the School's Administration responsibility and for them to be potentially Sued for putting the safety of Children and Staff first is why they are hesitant to make any Pandemic Mandates. Yet, if they have serious outbreaks due to being too lax, then they have that liability, it's tragic beyond words the situation we've put our School Systems in. I am Raising a Teen Grandchild and like your Grandson, she's Smart enough to understand the necessity of Pandemic Protocol... and she's a Special Needs Student Academically. So why Adults can't fathom it is something that mystifies, it's a no-brainer... tho' I'm seeing so many Covidiots that it really is alarming. They will be 100% responsible for not only prolonging this Plague, but in being the breeding grounds for new stronger and more deadly variants. I'm fed up with them all. Intentional Ignorance and avoidance of what would mitigate this is not something the Majority of Responsible Citizens should be tolerating.

  8. There is nothing more heartbreaking than the death of a child, Bohemian. I wish the world could see this.

    Pick your battles better

  10. This is not my battle, I am afraid.

  11. It is quite exasperating. After eighteen months or more of this wretched virus, what planet are people living on that they deny logic and so many people educated in medical matters?

I must remember 'when the fit hit the shan', haha.

  13. The ideas some people have on covid and it's management are difficult to accept. They are not able to make judgements using valid information.

  14. Debby, some people still believe that the Earth is flat!

I teach at a college. We are not allowed to have mask mandates here. So, masks are 'expected'. Initially about 90% in my classes wore masks. Two weeks later it went down to around 50%. This is even after an entire dormitory was quarantined.

It's very sad to see how much science is devalued.

  15. It is scary to think that because of the internet being created we have to learn about the stupidity of so many people. There is a debate going on right now in this country asking whether we should vaccinate 12 to 15 years old. Ask my granddaughter who wants to be vaccinated, she is tired of being sent home from school because one of her classmates have tested positive.

  16. It is bizarre how politicized Covid has become. As you said, with any other illness, people seem willing to accept science. But in this case there's all this questioning and challenging from people who don't have any scientific knowledge at all! Everything's a conspiracy! It's exhausting.

  17. I don't understand the resistance to masks either. They don't hurt you and they do prevent disease. People wear seatbelts, look both ways before they cross the street, stop at stop signs, I could go on and on but you get my point. It's so frustrating.

  18. Our parents are suing the state because our governor declared that there can be no mask mandates unless she decides one is necessary and putting hundreds of thousands of unvaccinated kids in close quarters with a very easily spread disease that can kill hundreds if not more of them isn't reason enough for a mandate. In this case, I hope the lawsuit is successful. I have decided that I will not vote for her again, ever, just because of her stance on this issue, no matter what the opponent is for that I might be against.

  19. My son says my 6 year old grandson wears the mask to school and then forgets to take it off when he's picked up and in the car. I don't know what to say about those parents who are only involved with themselves.

I'm glad you're here!

A Better Day

First of all, I want to thank every single person who recommended 'Puckoon'. Oh my gosh. It has been a long time since I laughed so...
