Frustrated

The mask mandate continues to heat up. Parents picketed. "My child, my choice", one sign read. A local lawyer/oilman has gotten involved, representing a teacher. His wife is the school superintendent, by the way. (Late Edit: Anonymous has pointed out that the lawyer is not the husband of the school superintendent. My apologies for taking that claim at face value).  The local newspaper ran a poll. 222 votes against masks. 85 for.

I hope every picketing parent has a plan for when the schools close their doors again.

At work, the girl one desk in front of me has covid. The young man two desks behind hasn't been there for two weeks. Today, someone else pointed out another guy who has not been here since last week. The three of them are smokers, and take breaks together. But if you ask the bosses if they have covid, they say, "We can not tell you that." (The only reason that we know for sure one person has it it that someone she carpools with said that she'd tested positive.)

I think we should be officially informed if we have covid spreading. They don't have to say names, even though the group is small enough that we'd probably be able to figure it out in short order.

I've been accused of being afraid of covid. I'm not, but I also think that you're a fool if you cannot see the need for commonsense protective measures.

  1. Have you been vaccinated? Please do if you can.

    Take care,

  2. Wow, that's astonishing poll results. Bummer.
I guess because of medical privacy laws / crap, we can't be directly informed by an employer.
For your work situation: the unvaccinated and smokers get sicker with covid. Your job security is probably increasing for the short-term, and maybe the long-term.

  3. Interesting. Here anyone in the same office would be classed as a close contact would have to go into a 14 day home quarantine and have three negative tests, the last on the 13th day.

People who may have crossed paths within the building would have to home quarantine until the result of a negative Covid test, usually within 24 hours or less.

Bit close to home for you I think.

  4. Although not exactly afraid of Covid I certainly would not want to catch it. For me, having even a mild asthma attack is bad enough and I imagine Covid could be worse, even if vaccinated. I hope you have not been put into contact with the infection.

  5. I am vaccinated. So is Tim. But our county is at less than 40% vaccinated (the same people protesting the masks are by and large the same folk who don't trust the vaccine). The newspaper polls are really not all that surprising when you consider that it is owned by Ogden Enterprises, and has been a long time supported of the right. I have wrangled with the editor before on publishing letters to the editor which are simply misinformation. Clearly, plainly, demonstrably false. I tried rebutting them with facts, but my letters were limited to two per month. We simply stopped the newspaper, which bills itself as 'news you can trust'. He considers himself nobly remaining in the middle, and allowing all sides to speak. I believe an editor's job is to reject things that are false. What I'm trying to say is that the people that still subscribe to that paper are people who subscribe to those views as well.

  6. I'm afraid of Covid, and I don't mind admitting it. I'm so so SO sick of Covidiots and the way they put us all in danger.

Stay safe (as safe as you can) Debby.

  7. I agree with you totall Deby - speak to anyone who has experienced it and they all say how very ill they felt - it is nonsense to make light of it.

  8. Art, married to Susan and Robert, married to Amy are no more closely related than cousins, if that.

  9. Thank you for that, Anonymous. My facts were incorrect.

  10. I saw on the news where some Georgia school has had ten staff members die this school year, all unvaccinated.

I just keep telling myself that at least those unvaccinated people who are dying won't be around for the next pandemic so perhaps it will go smoother.

  11. Fort Dade, Florida has lost 13. All unvaccinated. I honestly believe that one of the reasons it is such an issue here is that it did not reach critical proportions last time around. You will find at least one doctor and multiple medical personnel from the hospital who will declare that this is nothing. One nursing home lost nearly 1/3 of their residents, but the response from a nurse was: 'Yeah. And did you see how old they were?" As if, due to age, their cause of death did not matter. You don't see that at big city hospitals where they have dealt with this in crippling numbers last winter. I don't understand the denial. What has to happen for people to consider this 'real'?

  12. Not to minimize the risks to you personally, but if you're vaccinated that's a huge plus. It's not absolute but it makes a big difference, as you know. I'm surprised the vote count was so lopsided, given that we're talking about children who can't be vaccinated -- and contrary to what many parents believe, kids DO occasionally get seriously ill from Covid.

  13. The risks to me, personally, are not my concern. What I HATE is worrying that I might be carrying something to elderly friends, or to vulnerable people through incidental contact or even to my grandchildren. Mostly what I hate is feeling like a freak because these things even occur to me.

  14. Yes you have the right to know. It’s that simple.

  15. We should all be afraid of Covid. Afraid enough to wear a mask, afraid enough to get vaccinated, afraid enough to social distance and afraid enough to be tested. Stay safe.

  16. I know people who had Covid before the vaccine was ready. Most survived. None remain the same person that they were before. I'm at risk and I was vaccinated early on. I take every step that I reasonably can to stay free of the disease. Even after being vaccinated I have no desire to take the risk.

  17. It continues to boggle my mind how the regressives have turned a health event into mindless politics. It's a little piece of cloth!

  18. I'm vaccinated and I'd still be nervous.
