Work

Today, I was working. My desk tends to get pretty cluttered with work debris during the day. At the end of the day, I tidy up, but during the 10 hours at work, it accumulates stuff. Anyways, I noticed a large dark object. I happened to be wearing dangly earrings with beads of brown and amber on black wires and so my first thought was 'How on earth did my earring get way back there?!!' and I grabbed it up, except that it wasn't rigid like you'd expect....

...and then I realized that I was holding a very large, very dead spider.

To my credit there were no shrieks, but I did think of Weaver's post about a spider in her toilet paper roll.

Ten hour days...and today they announced mandated overtime on Saturday as well. The good news is that they finally have gotten permission to hire some more people.

  1. I'm not a shrieker but I certainly would have been startled and would have a racing heart after that.

  2. An eight day working day is quite enough. Ten hour days plus working six days a week, a bad situation and not sustainable.

A late friend saw on his couch what he thought was a raisin. He picked it up and before we could warn him, he popped the dead fly into his mouth and swallowed it. At least your spider looked like an inedible earing.

  3. I know the money is a blessing as you near retirement but please don't ruin your health working so hard. Some extra help wil be help to you also I hope. I have a friend working 84 hours a week 7 day weeks, 12 hour or more days. He tell me he is making a very nice salary but I tell him he is going to pay later. He has 3 kids that need help and don't hesitate to ask hime while they work part time jobs. He came from a broken home with very little and wants his kids to have so much more. My friend grew up in a migrant family and started picking strawberries at 6 yrs old and has never stopped working since, I know you are thankful your kids can and will work and take care or themselves.

  7. How can they mandate overtime? Seems like that ought to be up to you, whether to take overtime or not. Yeah, I would not be happy about grabbing hold of a dead spider -- mostly because for a split-second I'd be afraid it wasn't dead.

  8. There is voluntary overtime, and there is mandated. If they need you, they mandate. My objection was that when you're working hours like that, they need to hire more people. True story: Once during 'crunch time', overtime was mandated for six weeks straight: 10 hour days and 8 hour days on Saturday and Sunday. I actually did not believe that was legal. Turns out that I was wrong. That was the first year in my life that I did not get my Christmas tree up. It was awful.

  9. The good news for you, if I’m remembering correctly, is this is temporary work. And if it becomes intolerable, you can quit. I know that’s not your nature, but at this point it is an option, right?

  10. It is, Bob. You are right that it is not my nature, but...there is a house. (I know you are laughing yourself silly at the thought of it.) The thing is that it is adjacent to our retirement property, and we would not have to build a house. We are not sure how this will all pan out and nothing is definite at this point, but if it works out, it would be kind of a serendipitous thing.
